    3. Hi Sherri, Yes, I would love to see this data transcribed in to text, it is much easier to manage text than images. What software are you comfortable using? I should be able to open most windows format files. Fred ==================================== At 07:04 PM 04/12/2000 -0400, you wrote: >Fred, > >I have a copy of the directory also. 1. William Henry McCullough Bio Sketch
    2. One of the best known citizens of Clay County is William Henry McCullough, superintendent of the County Infirmary. Born July 28,1843, in the southwest corner of Washington township, Putnam county, Mr. McCullough first came to Clay county in 1866, elected in 1872, he served two years as Assessor of Jackson township, Owen County. In 1885 Mr. McCullough was chosen Superintendent of the Clay County Infirmary and has been successively re-elected by the Board of Commissioners, until at the expiration of his present term he will have served twelve years in that position. Having given general satisfaction he is accorded the high praise of having proven himself the best man who ever filled that arduous position. November 15,1868 he was married to Miss Hannah Heath in Owen County. Thre children were born unto them, the oldest and youngest being dead, Miss Anna N. McCullough living. Mrs. McCullough died February 27,1887. October 14,1890, Mr. McCullough was married to Maria Duniha of Brazil. Politically a Democrat and an earnest party worker, Mr. McCullough retains the good will and friendship of his opponents, with whom he is as popular as any man in the county. 2. THE FEEDER DAM BRIDGE This magnificent structure was completed and ready for travel in April 1895. It is constructed of solid steel, meaures 204 feet in length and stands 32 feet in height, having a roadway of 18 feet and a capacity of 129 pounds per square foot. It is built on stone abutments and consists of a single span crossing Eel River on the line between Sugar Ridge and Harrison townships, being consturcted by the C. F. Hunt Co., of Indianapolis, through John M. Larsh of Crawfordsville, agent, at a cost of $5000, the Company and Mr. Larsh sustaining considerable loss on their contract. Mr. Larsh, the agent, is well and favorably known in a business way to the people of Clay county, having erected a number of bridges here in the past few years, every one of which has proven entirely satisfactory, and none of which has ever cost the county a cent for repairs on account of deficient workmanship or material. The above bridge is the finest in the county and its strength, solidity and grandeur are a matter of pride to our people, of credit to our Commissioners and a compliment to the contractors. Aside from his exactness as a businesss man, Mr. Larsh is an affable gentleman and speedily converts an acquaintance into a friend, always retaining them as such by his courteous bearing and genteel treatment. CLAY COUNTY INFIRMARY Clay county has an excellent poor farm that may be said to be self-sustaining but needs a new and modern infirmary. Notwithstanding many improvements have been made, much remains to be accomplished to make this institution all that it should be. The present infirmary is often overcrowded, having at this time some forty men, women and children as inmates, among them two pronounced as incurable insane. Under the excellent management of Wm. H. McCullough as superintendent the farm and infirmafy has been conducted to the evident satisfaction of all the people of the county. The farm consists of a total of 240 acres, 149 acres of which were purchased from the John Steed estate, 40 acres from James and Smith Campbell, 11 acres from the John Cullin estate and 40 acres from George Siegelin. The location is two miles southwest of Bowling Green. The first poor farm in Clay county was located two and a half miles northwest of Bowling Green and was known as the Blunk farm.

If you have the time take a look at both of them from this web page; http://www.rootsweb.com/~inclay/enc-dir/ The file names are; 5highres.gif 5highres2.jpg My printer is out of ink, I thought it was acting funny. 3. Fred, the printed copy is almost illegible. It is easier to read the image on the screen. I suggest you ask Heather to blow this up on a copy machine and re-scan it, in pieces if necessary. She could first try scanning it a couple more times, removing and replacing it each time, to see if the random positioning makes some of the areas more legible. I have this almost transcribed, when yu get a better image. -----Original Message----- From: Fred Finkbiner <fred@claynet.com> To: INCLAY-L@rootsweb.com <INCLAY-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, April 11, 2000 8:51 PM Subject: Encyclopedic Directory of Clay County Ind. > I need a volunteer or two, I have on-line a page that Heather scanned and >sent to me. 3. Fred, I bought one of those. It was on microfiche. I should still have it here somewhere. Could Heather instead transcribe it or send the microfiche to you? Too small to print out and read completely. 3. Fred, The problem is not your printer! The information is not of high enough resolution [no detail]. JPG is not the best compression for text. Can you convert to .gif ? That format does a better job of compressing B&W line and drawings. Otherwise, convert to B&W .jpg and increase the resolution of the scan. I'm no expert but have spent a lot of time trying to compress photos and drawings to go into PowerPoint presentations and this is what I have gleaned from that effort. Wayne Reed
