    2. If you will email me personally I will try to help you.. bass103@juno.com Mary Jane Mace married John A Modesitt and six known children and possibly two more... of course now these children would be Modesitt surname.. but there are several Mace surnames persons in Clay County .. I met Lewis Mace a few years ago when his daughter was up from New Albany Indiana and Lew was close to 90 then.. of course he is dead now but his daughter has lots on the mace family. I will try to find an address for you to contact her (daughter) if we connect.. Mary Jane was the youngest child in the family I think Lew told me but she would have been his aunt.. 2. Marybeth, this is a natural progression. The mines in Dick Johnson township played out in early 1900s and new mines opened over in Vermillion County 1905-10 and thousands moved over there. It was a big migration. I have traced relatives through this migration. It takes lots of effort to pour through the 1910 or 1920 census of Vermillion county to find people. Don't know exactly what you expect to find in additional info. Most of these miners did not own property as they live in company temp housing or rented. So census WPA indexes and newpaper obits are about it. There were literally hunderds of mines in this area. I have never found any employment data from these mines. Clinton library has good materials if you are in the area. >Can someone point me in the right direction for finding information on >coal >miners? My William WILSON was a coal miner. 2. This may not be specific to your people, but a wonderful overall look at coal mining in southern Indiana is in a book produced by Linton-Stockton Junior High students l982-85 entitled THE COAL PROJECT. It is a gem of history and lore, and all the more so because youngsters produced it. I don't know how you can find a copy; check with area libraries. Contains l85 pages of facts, illustrations and personal interviews. I personally believe it should be reprinted and placed in all libraries. --Dixie Kline Richardson

    2. Joseph Keeler
    3. Marybeth, I don't know if this will help you. My grandfather, Joseph Keelor, was also a coalminer, who also lived in Terre Haute, Dick Johnson Township. I have a receipt where he paid his union dues of $1.00 for may and June 1920 to Ruben Dowen Finley, (I believe, can't be sure of the spelling its hard to read.) of local union # 2646 U.M.W.of A. dated June 14 1920. I know he lived in Terere Haute as early as 1900, because he married my grandmother in that year in Terre Haute. I don't know which mine he worked in either. I don't know if this Union would have any records of Mr. Wilson . I imagine the union still exists. Its probably the United Mine Workers of America. Good Luck.
