Dear Randy, Thanks very much for your message and suggestion. I'll certainly look into Henry Co., KY. On March 13, I sent a request for info (with my check) to the Clay Co. Gen. Soc., but haven't rec'd a reply yet. I keep thinking it will arrive soon. Maybe there will be at least some small clue with that reply. I have just sent Dist. #23 of Van Buren Township to Fred. He should have it posted to the website in the next few days. I am hoping that a lot of researchers can help me with that district. I am very disappointed in how I transcribed it, but it could not be helped. The handwriting on that district was basically unreadable. Hopefully a lot of people will be able to make out some of their families and send me corrections! Good luck to you all! I will be waiting for all the corrections that will surely be coming my way! :o) Becky
Heather has just sent in pages 48 thru 51 and I have them on-line at; http://www.rootsweb.com/~inclay/enc-dir/ If you can transcribe any of these new pages let me know and I will be happy to help you get started. I also have two new transcribed pages on-line 19 and 29. Thanks to Heather for the images and the volunteers working to transcribe these pages, Fred ====================================

Sewell MOORE and Charles MOORE were brothers, and both were physicians in the Clay Co. area. Hope someone recognizes them as being connected to your family. Sewell MOORE, 36, physician, born in Ohio Artimecy MOORE, 27, born in Missouri Calvin MOORE, 9, born in Missouri Harbin MOORE (Harbon), 7, born in Missouri Charles MOORE, 33, physician, born in Ohio There is an 1837 record for the purchase of land located in Clay Co. for a Calvin MOORE of Greene Co., Indiana. Is he related to Sewell and Charles? There is an SSDI record for a Sewell MOORE who died in 1998 in Lafayette, Tippecanoe Co., Indiana. Possibly related? Thanks very much.
Laura, In a message dated 00-05-09 00:11:48 EDT, you write: << Does anyone know if emigrants sailing from Glasgow planned to come to Clay County directly after landing in the U.S.? >> My great grandfather was a miner when he first arrived in Clay County. I have been told that recruiters went to England and elsewhere looking for men to work the mines. In this case, people would have had a destination in mind. At the courthouse I found two documents for my great grandfather who arrived in Clay County in 1879. His Declaration of Intention (to become a U.S. citizen) was filed a little over a year after he arrived, possibly because he wanted to buy property, or his new wife wanted him to do so. His Petition for Naturalization was not done until 1906, so he waited quite awhile to actually become a citizen. The Declaration of Intention contained the following information: State of Indiana, Clay County, Sct: William Seymour states that he was born in England; that he is twenty-six years of age; that he is of the British nation; that he migrated from Liverpool on or about the 14th day of August, 1879 , and arrived in the United States on the 22nd day of August , 1879 ; that he intends settling in the United States, and owes allegiance to Victoria, Queen of Great Britain & Ireland and now declares, upon oath, before the Clerk of the Clay Circuit Court, that it is bona fide his intention to become a CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES, and to renounce forever all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty whatever, and particularly to Victoria, Queen of Great Britain & Ireland. Signed William Seymour The Petition for Naturalization was far more informative, as it contained information regarding his travel. He told the date that he left Liverpool (Aug 1879), the name of the ship, the port of arrival, his date and place of birth, his wife's and children's data. He sounds as if he had the destination before he left England, as he left Liverpool o/a 14 August, arrived at the port of Quebec and took a train to Port Huron, MI, and thence to Indiana by August 25th. Recently I was able to interlibrary loan a microfilm from Canada on which I found the ship list, and there he was. These two documents were in two different books, and it was ten years ago that I copied them. I can't remember why I could not get photocopies, but I hand copied the text, and also took pictures of the pages with my SLR camera. Hope this helps. Glorianne
Yes, it helps a lot. It looks like the Naturalization record won't tell me much of anything. I have photocopies of the Declaration, and they only contain the brief information I mentioned. It would seem that 10 years made a BIG difference in the info that was put into them! Yes, you sent the pages from the Bible. I know that there has to be a connection given the names of the children of both men and where they lived in comparison to him. Just something further to research on. No, there wasn't anything to identify the brothers, nor any sisters for that fact. We all realize that in those times people did not travel alone all the way from Meigs Co., Ohio to Clay Co., IN alone, there has to be others, family members who came with them. At the CC genealogical library last year I copied info from Declaration of Intent for Naturalization for two great-grandfathers. Both sailed from Glasgow, one in July 1869, and other in July 1870. I don't know their port(s) of arrival. The one time I had time to research at the courthouse, right before they closed I noticed blue books that said Naturalization Records. Has anyone on this list used them? Would they tell me more information than the intent record? It only listed name, date leaving Glasgow, date of arrival in US, and the country he was a subject to. I sent off for the ships passenger lists microfilms for New York for the above dates, but did not find them on the microfilms. But they could easily have come into another port. Does anyone know if emigrants sailing from Glasgow planned to come to Clay County directly after landing in the U.S.? If so, chances are there would have been a particular port that would have been common. One grandfather was Scottish and the other Irish. Suggestions? Laura E.
