    2. Hello John.... Elmer was born Nov. 27, 1874...and married Clara May 4th, 1905. I do not know anything else. I do remember him though..I was quite young..I remembered him as being very thin ....but as I learned years later...he was dying of Cancer when I saw him.....I saw him in the garage with bloody rags....so he must have been in the end stages and in a great deal of pain. They leased land outside of town and he farmed it. I do have a vague memory of him letting me feed the few pigs. It was in my mother's name for years and she leased it out and it was farmed. His wife Clara died in 1958. Ann

I have contacted two local funeral homes and no one seems to know how to find a map telling where people/with names & dates are buried in that cemetery. 3. This map is just for about 630 acres surrounding Cloverland, and most of these are not the original owners of the land. The Bowles, Modesitts, Bemis, and other families lived also in the area. Some of the Bemiss/Bemass families lived in Cloverland town proper. I believe that the Modesitts and Bowles intermarried and the Bemiss married into the McBride families. Very interesting community!!! 3. Apparently, according to Trinity400, there is a second line of Carpenters, Eli and his folks from NC, who became relatives of the George Carpenter line (Winfield Scott, Laura, etc.) from PA through marriage. They are distant enough that I have no record of them, but they seem to be in the same cemetery. NOW I am going to call the old timers and ask. -----Original Message----- From: Dale White <dwhite@jdv.net> To: INCLAY-L@rootsweb.com <INCLAY-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, May 16, 2000 1:36 PM Subject: Re: Carpenters Cemetery >Yes, this is Carpenter's Cemetery south of Cloverland, IN Muriel > >Dick Harris wrote: > >> Most of these are our relatives. However, my oldest daughter also married into a family with Smith connections from Clay Co., IN and I have not been able to connect the two, they may not be related. The second line goes back to Jospeh Smith b. 1895 who married Sarah Elizabeth Gilmore . Anyone have connections to this line of Smiths?? 3. Actually, I don't have any information on Arthur, yet. I need to go talk to my Grandma Smith, over in Brazil. I've been meaning to get over there, but never seem to have the time. I guess that this will be my excuse. When I talk to her, I'll have to ask her if she remembers her grandparents' names, which would help the situation a lot. As far as the Smith's in Clay County, saying that they were legion seems to be an understatement, because I'm trying to trace my genealogy on both my mother and father's sides, who were both from Clay County and have found at least four different (I hope) lines of Smith's along the way. If we find a connection to James Atkinson, I'll let you know. We'll see what we can find out.
