Well, we finally made a trip to Brazil last Tuesday, but didn't get to my grandmother's house. We DID make it to the genealogy room at the Clay County Library and found some additional information on Savannah Atkinson. According to the records that we found, she was listed as both Susanna, Savanah and Savanna. They list her parents as John Atkinson and Mary J. Welkey. She married Edward Frederick Peter Carl Mitscher on May 7, 1893. We believe that we found a death record of her father John Atkinson on July 28, 1903 at the age of 59 in Brazil, meaning that he was born in either 1843 or 1844. We did find a record of a John Atkinson in the Encyclopedic Directory of Clay County, Indiana, which says that John was a miner, owned his home, was born in 1843 in England and moved to Clay County in 1886. Isaac and Delany Mace were the beginnings their daughter Mary Jane married John Modesitt - you might ry Modesitt surname for information.. also there was a Opal Butler who married Lewis Mace. The Mace cemetery is located on the Putnam side of the line but back up a field... going south out of Reelsville. there is an arch over the entrance but it sets back off the road a little and very hard to see unless you are going from clay county to putnam county coming the other way you will miss the entrance as it is off the road..there are trees around the entrance and a gate.. or at least that is the shape when I was past it last .. Lew and Opal had a daughter that does genealogy down around New Albany Indiana -- you might try a query in that area...It has been years since I had contact with her.. Mary Jane is buried in Rhule Cemetery in Clay County ...

Albert Payne was born in Jackson townshiip, Clay county, indiana, December 26, 1855. His parents, Bennett and Ellen Payne, were among early settlers, coming to this county in 1829. Albert attended the public schools until he was fourteen years old and from that time until he was eighteen years of age drove a mule in a coal mine, devoting his spare time to study. By that means he qcuired an education fitting him for the position of a teacher in the school room, in which he was engaged until thirtyfour years of age, part of the time working on a farm and reading law at home as opportunity presented. In 1888 having been chosen Principal of one of the public schools of Brazil, Mr. Payne, moved to this city. In 1890 he resigned the position of Principal and having previously been admitted to the bar of the Circuit court, he formed a partnership with Robert Fisher which was dissolved in 1892, and actively entered in the practice of the law in which he has been remarkably successful. Mr. Payne has taken an active part in politics and in the counsels of the Republican party has made his influence felt by his firm stand for the conducting of campaigns on a high plane rather than resorting to trickery. In 1880 Albert Payne and Miss Emma A. Nivens of Perry township were united in marriage. Six children have been born to them, four are living, two have passed to the beyond. The family residence is a pretty and convenient home on the southwest corner of Walnut and Chestnut streets. Mr. Payne is a member of Brazil Lodge No, 264, F. and A. M., Brazil Chapter, No. 59, R. A. M., Wm. M. Black Chapter, No. 80, O. E. S., Brazil Council, No. 40, R. and S.
