    3. I will be visiting Clay Co sometime in August. Do I need to contact the courthouse to view their records? Is there a good genealogy library there? What are the hours for these places and the addresses? Also since one of the people I am looking for info on may have had some problems mentally....was there a hospital nearby in the 1860's-1870's for someone who may not have been able to care for herself? Would the court have records for her if the children had to declare her incompetant? Are these available to the public at the courthouse? I am looking for a family who lived in Harrison twp. Are there any transcribed cemetery records? Any suggestions on where to visit? I will have about a day's time there. Thanks, Selma

    1. Michael and Mary Cutshall - Scott Co, IN to Clay Co., IN - 1871
    2. rwvaughn
    3. Hello fellow list members. I am trying to track down death dates and burial information for ancestors in my Cutshall line particularly Michael Cutshall and his wife Mary Anne (Everett) Cutshall. Any help would be appreciated. Michael CUTSHALL, son of George and Mary CUTSHALL was born circa 1820, in Ohio according to various census schedules. At the current time it has not been possible to determine with certainty whether Michael was born in Coshocton or Tuscarawas County (borders changed and his parents moved quite a bit). Michael married Mary Anne EVERETT on 26 Dec 1843 in Tuscarawas County, OH. Mary was born circa 1820 in Tuscarawas County. OH. Michael and Mary moved to Scott County, Indiana from Tuscarawas Co, OH around 1845, for their first child, William H., was born in Ohio, on 02 Apr 1844, and their second child Barbara A., was born in Scott County, IN in 1846. In 1871, Michael and Mary sold their lands in Scott County, IN and moved to Clay County, IN. It was in Clay County that they both are believed to have died and are buried. Michael died sometime after 01 May 1874, when he and Mary both signed their names to a deed selling a parcel of land to his younger brother Abraham (Deed Book 14). Mary Anne died sometime after 24 Feb 1881, when she signs a deed selling land to Jacob Miller in Clay County. Michael and Mary were the parents of twelve children, most of whom were married in Clay County. William H. Cutshall Barbara A. Cutshall (md. John H. Heins 08 Oct 1871 - Clay Co., IN) Malinda Cutshall (md. Moses Winkelpleck 24 Aug 1871 - Clay Co.) George Cutshall (md. Martha Auman 22 May 1879 - Clay Co.) Joseph Cutshall Cynthia A. Cutshall (md. Joseph Horn 03 Jan 1878 - Clay Co.) Mary Cutshall Ellen Cutshall Eliza J. Cutshall Sarah Cutshall Margaret Cutshall (md. William L. Logsdon 24 Aug 1888 - Clay Co.) Jacob Cutshall (md. Viola J. Schnellenberger 17 Dec 1894 - Clay Co.) Any help that anyone would be willing to offer in finding the death and burial information for Michael and Mary Anne would be appreciated greatly. 1. Market
    2. I have the parents of Daniel MARKET born in 1846 in Indiana as Solomon and Salome. This is according to the 1860 census for Jackson twp in Clay co. Solomon is a farmer born about 1809 in North Carolina. Salome was born about 1813 in Ohio. The children (all born in Indiana) are Henry about 1839, John L. about 1844, Daniel and Catharine 1846. Travis in "History of Clay Co., Indiana" on p. 29 mentions that Solomon is also a cooper and that he lives on a farm called Idylwilde south of Hoosierville. Blanchard in his "History of Clay Co.," mentions that Henry MARKET was wounded while serving with the 71st Indiana in the civil war. There is also a John W. MARKETwho served with the 149th Indiana who might be related. Salome passed away by 1865 when Solomon married Jane MOORE on the 19th of January. Jane was Hannah Jane ANTRIM the widow of Zachariah MOORE. By 1880 they had moved to Anderson twp, Clark Co., Illinois. John and Daniel where living with their father as was stepsons Henry and Aden MOORE. "Jane" and Solomon had a son William possibly born in 1876 in Indiana. (I say possibly since the dates don't correspond with the know information) Hannah passed away in 1907 in Marshall Illinois (Clark Co.) of TB. I am told that that is the same illness that took Solomon's life in 1891. By the way, Henry married a Catharine SEIGLE in 1861. Don't know if you needed any of this. Terri

    1. Re: Dr. John Chance
    2. Very interested to know that a son of Purnel Chance went to Conway Co, AR. So did John and Sarah Luther, I believe this Sarah is the daughter of Purnel Chance. Let me know if you agree. ------------------- John LUTHER was born in 1798 in Randolph County, North Carolina.1 He appeared on the census in 1830 in Clay County, Indiana. At that time, both John and wife were age 20-30, and they had two daughters under five years old. He resided , when he patented land, on 4 Jan 1831 in Clay County, Indiana. This land was located E 1/2 SW 1/4 Section 34 T 11N R 6 W. On 1 August 1839, he was granted seven other patents: W 1/2 SW 1/4 Sec 15, T 10 N R 6 W SW 1/4 South East 1/4, Section 29, T. 12 N R 6 West E 1/2 NW 1/4 Sec 15, T 10N R 6 W SW 1/4 SW 1/4 Sec 35, T 11 N R 6 W NE 1/4 SW 1/4 Sec 15 T 10 N R 6 W SE 1/4 SE 1/4 Sec 32 T 11 N R 6 W SE 1/4 SW 1/4 Sec 3 T 10 N R 6 W I suspect that I don't have a very clear idea of the time frame on the granting of these patents. For instance, John sold that SW 1/4 SE 1/4 Sec 29 T12 R6 on 15 April 1837. In addition to the land he patented, he bought from John Chance on 22 April 1832, the south 1/2 of NE 1/4 Sec 32 T12 R 5. In September of the same year he sold the East 1/2 of this property to Purnell Chance. On 3 Mar 1837 he and Sarah sell the S 1/2 of NE 14 Sec 32 T 12 R 5 to Robert and Urias Wilkinson. At the same time, Samuel and Margaret Owen, Purnel and Starlin Chance, and John and Anna Chance sold various tracts, all in this same section, to Wilkinson's. Whatever the circumstances of this sale may be, they do establish a close relationship among this group. Also, on 28 July 1837, he bought the SE 1/4 SW 1/4 Sec 15 T 10N R 6 W from Jacob and Rachel Luther. Another of the sections he patented listed above was sold by John and Sarah to Esau Presnell on 15 April 1837, for $51.50. This was the Southwest 1/4 of South East 1/4, section 29, Township 12 North, Range 6 West. Samuel Howe Smydth and William Anderson were witnesses. He appeared on the census in 1840 in Izard County, Arkansas. On page 195, John's household is listed as 1 male age 30-40, 1 female age 20-30, 2 females age 5-10, 1 female and 2 males age 0-5. From this I suspect there were a couple of girls older than Sarah b 1834. He resided , when he sold land, on 11 Nov 1841 in Izard County, Arkansas. John and Sarah sold land to William Luther, Jr. of Clay County, for $51. This was the North 1/2 East 1/2 NW 1/4, Section 15, Township 10 North, Range 6 West, 40 acres. Witnesses were John Osborne and Purnell Chance. John and Sarah acknowledged this deed on the above date at Clay County, before Justice of the Peace, John Osborn. This was one of the parcels of land he patented in 1839. He was living on 10 Jul 1847 in Fulton County, Arkansas. John and Sarah sold to Tillman Chance 200 acres for $600. This was the southwest quarter and the Southeast 1/4 of Northwest 1/4 of section 15, Township 10 North, Range 6 West. Witnesses were Gilbert Wells and Isaac King, though latter been the J.P.floor Fulton County. On the same date John and Sarah of Fulton County, Arkansas, sold another tract, 40 acres for $50, the South East 1/4 South East 1/4, Section 32, Township 11 North, Range 6 West. He appeared on the census in 1850 in Ozark County, Missouri. He is listed on page 8. He was age 52, born North Carolina, occupation Miller. He had real estate valued at $1200. His wife Sarah, was age 44 born North Carolina. Children Sarah, John, Thomas were born in Indiana. Jackson, Calvin, Martha, and Purnell were born in Arkansas. Their youngest, Starlin, was born Missouri. Also living in the household were Eli Parson, age 20, born IN, and James Heren age 18 born Tennessee. He resided on 1 Jan 1850 in Ozark County, Missouri. He received land patent No. 9791. The land is described as the North East 1/4 of the South East 1/4 of section 28, Township 22, range 12, in that district of lands subject to sales at Springfield County, MO, containing 40 acres. President Zachary Taylor "cause these letters to be made patent." He resided on 1 Oct 1850 in Fulton County, Arkansas. At that time, having deposited in the general land office of the United States, a certificate of the register of the land office at Batesville and, full payment having been made by the said John Luther according to the provisions of the Act of Congress of the 24th of April, 1820, entitled "an act making further provision for the sale of the public lands," for land described as the Southwest 1/4 of the Southwest 1/4 of section 4, Township 20 North, Range 11 West, in the district of land subject to sale at Batesville, Arkansas, containing 40 acres. This was on Certificate No. 3625. The grant was signed by President Millard Fillmore. He resided on 10 Dec 1850 in Ozark County, Missouri. Certificate No. 13643, register of the land office at Batesville, Arkansas, was for land described as the East 1/2 of the North East 1/4, and the South West 1/4 of the North East 1/4 of section 17, Township 17 North, range 12 West, containing 120 acres. James Buchanan was president at that time. He appeared on the census in 1860 in Conway County, Arkansas. They were in Walker Township, p. 556. John was age 60 born North Carolina, a farmer, real-estate worth $1000, personal property worth $840. Sarah was age 54 born North Carolina. An interesting note is that the census taker listed as occupation for all the wives, "Cooks, etc.". Children still in the household were Jackson 18, Martha 16, Calvin 16, Burnett 13 and "Neeling S." 11 (I assume this was Starlin). The oldest daughter, Sarah, has apparently married, as had Thomas, who was in the household next-door. Did not see John William. He died before Jun 1862 in Conway County, Arkansas. There is a deed in Conway County land records, book J p 104, where Thomas W Luther sells 200 acres of land and all his interest in the personal estate of John Luther. While it doesn't specifically state that John was dead, it would seem likely that he was. Note that I checked the marriage records of Conway County, Books A & B (1851-1878) and of this family found only the marriage of Jackson. I also checked both grantor and grantee indexes to deeds and did not find any Luther deeds, however John Luther who died in 1862 left 200 acres, and John M Luther in 1859 sells 144 acres. I checked the probate index Conway County, no Luther entries. John LUTHER was married to Sarah CHANCE about 1825. Sarah CHANCE was born in 1806 in North Carolina. I suspect that she was the daughter of Purnell Chance and his wife, Starlin, who dealt in land in Section 32 T 12 N R 5 W. Purnell and wife were still in the county at least in 3 March 1837. I note, of course that John and Sarah named children Purnell and Starlin. Both of those are fairly unusual names. Pernal Chance is on page 264 in the 1830 census For Clay County. One male page 60-70, one female page 50-60, and one male age 10-15. At this age, he would have been of a suitable age to be the father of Sarah. and there are a number of deeds for Purnall Chance and wife Starlin, I note one on 23 April 1846. John LUTHER and Sarah CHANCE had the following children: I. Sarah Ann LUTHER was born in 1834 in Indiana. II. John William LUTHER was born in 1837 in Indiana. III. Thomas W. LUTHER was born in 1839 in Indiana. He appeared on the census in 1860 in Conway County, Arkansas. He is listed next-door to his father, living in Walker Township, p. 556. He was age 21and his wife, Hannah, was 20. He appeared on the census in 1880 in Van Buren County, Arkansas. At that time, Thomas was 44 years old, born Indiana. Hannah was age 37 born Kentucky. The only children in the household are George W. age 13 born Missouri, and Mary E. age 9 born Arkansas. He died about 1895 in Center Ridge, Conway County, Arkansas.2 Death information is from Virginia L Peck, 9909 Chiles St, Saint Louis, Missouri, from a family group sheet dated September 1981. Thomas was buried at Center Ridge Cemetery, Conway County, Arkansas. Thomas W. LUTHER was married to Hannah (wife of Thomas W. Luther) about 1860 in Conway County, Arkansas. They at appear to be newly married in 1860. Hannah (wife of Thomas W. Luther) was born in 1843 in Kentucky. Virginia Peck does not give a death date for Hannah, but says she is buried at Center Ridge Cemetery, Conway County, Arkansas. Thomas W. LUTHER and Hannah (wife of Thomas W. Luther) had the following children: A. George Washington LUTHER was born on 11 Jun 1868 in Aurora, Lawrence County, Missouri. He appeared on the census in 1900 in Conway County, Arkansas. I found him in the soundex. In He was listed in Lick Mountain Township,E D 8 Sheet 19 line 26. He died on 9 Jun 1959 in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky. He was buried on 11 Jun 1959 in Walnut Ridge, Lawrence County, Arkansas.2 Note that George was not in either the 1900 or 1910 Soundex for Arkansas, so I don't know where he was those years. B. Mary Elizabeth LUTHER was born about 1871. She died in Center Ridge, Conway County, Arkansas.2 IV. Jackson P. LUTHER was born in 1842 in Izard County, Arkansas. He enlisted in the military on 5 Mar 1862 in Conway County, Arkansas. His service record said he had been absent since April 20, 1862, was sick. Jackson P. LUTHER was married to Dinah BLACKWELL on 7 Sep 1852 in Conway County, Arkansas. They were married by John Chance, a Baptist minister whose credentials were recorded in Van Buren County. It appears to meet that the marriage date is incorrect. Dinah BLACKWELL was born in 1840. She was age 20 when married. V. Calvin LUTHER was born in 1844 in Izard County, Arkansas. He enlisted in the military before 30 Apr 1862 in Conway County, Arkansas. Served in Co G, 31 Arkansas Infantry as a private. He was described as having blue eyes, light hair, fair complexion, was five feet feet four inches tall. He was 19 years old, born Missouri He died on 30 Apr 1862.3 His death is given on a muster roll dated 4 Apr 1863, Shelbyville, TN. VI. Martha Ann LUTHER was born in 1844 in Izard County, Arkansas. VII. Purnell C LUTHER was born in 1847 in Izard County, Arkansas. VIII. Starlin Susanna LUTHER was born on 22 Jan 1848 in Ozark County, Missouri. She died on 20 Jul 1936 in Broken Arrow, Tulsa County, Oklahoma. She was buried after 20 Jul 1936 in Center Hill Cemetery, White County, Arkansas. Starlin Susanna LUTHER was married to David Napoleon FITCH about 1870. David Napoleon FITCH was born on 20 Mar 1850 in Springville, Henry County, Tennessee. He died on 17 Apr 1907 in White County, Arkansas. He was buried after 17 Apr 1907 in Center Hill Cemetery, White County, Arkansas. Starlin Susanna LUTHER and David Napoleon FITCH had the following children: A. Louella Agnes FITCH was born on 9 Sep 1871 in Johnson County, Illinois. She died on 20 Mar 1905 in Johnson County, Illinois. She was buried after 20 Mar 1905 in Ganntown, Johnson County, Illinois. B. Luther Anderson FITCH was born on 5 Jul 1875 in Johnson County, Illinois. He died on 15 Oct 1935 in Martin, Weakley County, Tennessee. He was buried after 15 Oct 1935 in Henry County, Tennessee. C. The 1860 Van Buren Co., Arkansas, says John (b. @ 1792) was born in Maryland and that his son Pernal (b. @ 1820) was born in Maryland also. The 1850 Van Buren census gave North Carolina @ 1794 for John and 1820 Indiana for his son Pernal. Purnel Chance and Starling Barnes moved from Guilford County, North Carolina, to Indiana (ending up in Clay County, but there may have been stops along the way). John's wife Anna (b @ 1791 or 1792) was born in North Carolina. (John remarried in Conway County, Arkansas, in 1862 or '63.) Tilman (1797), son of Purnel (1769) stayed in Clay County after his brother John moved to Arkansas and his other brother Daniel moved to Illinois. I have more on this family, provided to me by a descendant in the Clay Co. Genealogical Society. Also, refer to my query on Dr. John Chance in Van Buren Co queries. I know the family was also connected to Delaware and that John likely was in the War of 1812 there. He was hanged in @ 1863 by Confederate General Joseph Shelby's men for apparently leading (!!!) raids against pro-Confederate families farms and plantations.

John had sons named Tilman (b. @ 1827, IN) and Pernell (b. @ 1820, IN). He moved his family to Van Buren Co., Arkansas (Cadron Township). 1. Lihu Thompson?
    2. Greg
    3. I'm trying to find my Thompson family. I know quite a bit on the wife's family, but can find nothing on the father. His marriage record calls him Lihu Thompson. An IGI file calls him Elihue Thompson. He married Cynthia Griggs on Sep 26, 1870, Maddison Co. KY. In 1880 he is gone and the wife and child are living with her sister's family in Brownburg, Hendrick Co. IN. An IGI for a daughter says she was born in Clay Co. IN. Daisy Elizabeth LININGER b. Sep 12, 1876 Saline City, Clay, IN Father: Elihue THOMPSON Mother: Cynthia GRIGGS Daisy's mother's 1947 Obit lists her as: Daisy E Parrett, of OH. Why is her last name Lininger in the IGI? Looking for Anything on herv father. Thanks, Greg
