    2. Owen County, Indiana has a web site, and people who can do lookups. Not all counties are as fortunate as Owen to have had a group of people who looked at and transcribed every legible gravestone to be found in the large county. These were published in one volume in l983.

    2. Hello Heather, I don't have any connection to your family but I enjoyed your description of your trip. And how I envy you. All my parents and grandparents have died and I am on my own in researching my and my husband's family. How I wish I had listened more closely to my grandparents stories. In case you haven't done so already, be sure to get as many of their stories on audio tape or even better video tape. That way you not only have the information but you can go back and listen for information you may have missed or didn't connect to anything at the time. And you will have their voice and personality to enjoy and to share with your children in the years to come. Make the most of the time you have with your parents and grandparents (it sounds like you already are); alas as with childhood, it passes too quickly. 1. Re: My first attempt at researching my McClains (out side of the Internet)
    2. Your story really turned out to be a great trip all around. About 20 years ago my parents wanted to go back to Clay Co. Brazil where my Dad's father and grandfather and great grandfather grew up. I had been researching for 15 years at that time so I wasn't really looking for anything. The trip for Dad was rather depressing as the bike shop on National Ave that my grandpa had was gone, the womens shop on National that his sister had was gone, even the home of his great grandfather had a funeral home on the property. He did get to visit his 2nd cousin which was very nice. Now there is no one in Brazil, everyone has passed away, but so has my mom and dad. I always enjoyed going down there even though I never lived there. It always felt like home. Barb

    1. My first attempt at researching my McClains (out side of the Internet)
    2. First of all I must send many thanks to the folks at the Clay County Genealogy Library and the Sullivan County Historical Museum and the Library in Sullivan County. They were all so helpful!! A little background: I live in Niles, MI and my Grandfather and Grandmother are here visiting for the summer. I asked my grandfather to take me to Hymera and Saline, Indiana to the places he grew up. I wanted to see the old farm, where the Risher Mine used to be and the old house we went to as children to visit his mother Lulu, my great grandmother. So we borrowed a mini van, packed up my two little ones, my mother, my grandparents and myself. And headed off to the 'homestead'. We went to the places listed above including the K of P Cemetery, the Merom Cemetery and another Cemetery across the street from aUnited Methodist Church that my great grandfather had decorated on the inside many years ago. We gathered information 4 generations back. Before we left we didn't even know my grandfather's grandfather's name. Know I even know his great-grandfather's name. I felt the trip was a Huge success. I took lots of photos and wrote lots of notes. I was a little disappointed that the farm and any sign of the mine were gone though. But.... I got more out of the drive there and back than I did all the information gathered. I could have gone there by myself and gathered the same information but, I would not have had the privilege of listening to the conversations between my mother and grandparents. "Remember this Dad?" "Oh my, I can't believe how that has changed." and "Do you remember when the cats got car sick and we dropped them off there?" "Do you remember when we hung white sheets up on the water tower and watched movies at night?" I must say that my favorite vacation ever taken was the summer my grandparents and mother took me to Sullivan and Clay County Indiana. ( I bet not too many can say that) Now to the info gathered: My grandfather, William Thomas McClain is the son of Lulu P. Risher and William Thomas McClain. My Great-Grandfather, William Thomas McClain b. 15 Sep 1894 m. 1919 d. 11 Aug 1969 is the son of Wm. B. McClain and Louise Dudley. My GGreat-Grandfather, William B. McClain b. about 1853 m.Nov 1893 d. Mar 1916 is the son of Wm. B. McClain and Ann b. abt 1830 Any one else connect to this line? Heather Mitchell http://homestead.juno.com/hethmitchell/index.html Wm.
