    2. There is the possibility your family member arrived in New Orleans. Many Central Europeans did so, and then traveled to states like Illinois and Indiana via river. They usually were headed for a friend or relative who was already in that region. Water travel must have been low cost. Others got to Chicago via water and foot, then took a single route to Minnesota. I can't remember the number but it is Foster Avenue on Chicago's North side. There are some books about these immigrant routes. Frank Sellers

    2. I have no idea of the family names that you are trying to find in Brazil but am interested in your James name. Are your James family also from that area of Indiana? My husbands great grandmother was an Emma Helen James and we cannot find her parents names so far. Story is that they are related to the infamous Jesse James. Are you also? Our Emma Helen was married and died in Vermilion County which is next to Clay County in Indiana. Thanks for your time. Kaye

    2. Judy Dukes
    3. I am back trying to find descendants of and other information about John James Stewart and his wife, variously known as Jennie or Jean McCarty, McArthur, and other variations. Her obit in 1910 says that she was his widow, but I haven't been able to find when he died. She was buried in Cottage Hill cemetery, and although I've seen postings on this list about the cemetery, I paid no attention at the time. The obit says she was the oldest resident of Brazil and one of the oldest residents of Clay County. Her obit also says she was survived by 4 sons and 2 daughters. I have James, Archibald, Robert, and William; Janet and I don't know the other daughter. JAMES md Anna Wimsey. She died in 1909 and was survived by James and 7 children, Kate (Mrs. Bert Yocum), Della ( Mrs. William Freeds), Margaret, Peter, Frank, Paul and Helen. I know that the daughters had children--Yocum daughter b Feb 28 1910 and son b Aug 2 1907. Freads had a son John W b July 25, 1917. ARCHIBALD md Emma Brokaw and they had Alma, James, Jennie, and Lydia. ROBERT md Estelle Grimes and they had Agnes, who md John Huber, and George. WILLIAM md more than once and I can't determine any wife for certain except for Iva Hamilton. They were older when married, so it's possible he had children by earlier wives. I have the ancestors of this family way back into Scotland, and have a pretty good handle on other descendants in Vigo and Sullivan Counties. I've just started working on the Brazil bunch. 3. You can call the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis, genealogy division, and they have an index to check the mortality index for a name you seek. They can't give you the info from the index, as I understood it, just tell you if your person is listed. I know you want 1860, but for the 1880 census she told me the person had to die between June 1879 and June 1880. My person died in January 1879, so I was out of luck. I don't know if it is exactly the same sequence of months for 1860. If you decide to call, I had to try about 10 times over several hours before I got through with another question today. 317-232-3689 I believe they close at 4 or 4:30 today, but on Thursday are open until 8:00, possibly later.
