    1. [INCLAY] Harvey McM*ll*n, born 9/26/1831 in Carroll/Jefferson Co
    2. J Smith
    3. I'm seeking anything I can find on this man! Here is what I have... Born on Sept. 26, 1831 in Jefferson Co, OH according to his C.W. Pension records, and in Carroll Co, OH according to his C.W. enlistment papers. Next we have Harvey purchasing a military land warrant from Robert Sherrard on June 26, 1852 in Jefferson Co, OH. I haven't seen the paper yet, but was told that Robert Sherrard got the warrant from George Taylor who received it on 10/28/1851. He then took this warrant to IN where he purchased 80 acres in Martin Co. We have record of him selling half of it, but not the other half. He doesn't appear again until his marriage to Barbary Noland (daughter of John and Martha "Patsy" Noland) on Aug. 20, 1859 in Barr Twp, Daviess Co, IN. That is where we find in the 1860 census as well. He enlisted to serve in the C.W. at Washington, Daviess Co, IN on 10/17/1864 in the place of R.T. Beckett (believed to be Ruben T. Beckett). He mustered out at Louiseville, KY on July 24, 1865 (approx). >From there the family went to Clay Co, IN (1870 census), Clark Co, IL (1880 census), Vigo Co, IN (1890 or 1892 directory listing), Vigo Co, IN 1900 census). Harvey then died in Vigo Co, IN on November 25, 1907. He and Barbary had 4 or 6 children, 4 of which have been identified; Mary Ann, James Ruben, Martha "Maude", and John. Harvey was buried in Highland Lawn Cemetery in Vigo Co, IN. He was a member of the GAR. I do not know the names of his parent, or even exactly where he was born (which county). There has to be some more information out there, but I haven't found it yet... Please help if possible! 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Halstead, Bernethy, Abbott, Shell, Ross, Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xh.2ADE/1633 Message Board Post: This book has no cover, and no index, and no author. I bought it on Ebay; it just has the insides, but it is full of Indiana biographies. I am not researching this family, just thought I would share. I do not know anymore about these families or these surnames. NOTE: I don’t know if there is any additional mention of this family in the book, it has no index. I do not want to sell this book. I am typing the biographies from it. Typed by Lora Radiches: Surnames in this biography are: Halstead, Bernethy, Abbott, Shell, Ross, ARTHUR M. HALSTEAD. Since 1918 the tailoring business of Arthur M. Halstead has been one of the substantial business enterprises of Gary, where the proprietor, a thorough master of his trade, has built up a large, lucrative and representative patronage. Mr. Halstead commenced his career as a teacher in the public schools, but after a short experience in this line decided that he could find greater profit in some other field of endeavor and therefore applied himself to learning the business with which he has since been identified. From modest beginnings he has developed a large clientele among the prominent business, financial and professional element of the city and has established himself firmly in public confidence and esteem. Arthur M. (Art) Halstead was born at Clay City, Indiana, March 4, 1881, and is a son of B. F. and Marilla (Bernethy) Halstead. His father, a native of New York State, was educated in the public schools there, but as a young man came to Indiana and wa! s married at Logansport, subsequently moving to Clay City, where he lived for some years. Later he resided for a few years each at Patricksburg and Monticello, but eventually moved to Plainwell, Michigan, where he passed the evening of life and died December 27, 1929, being buried at Plainwell. For many years Mr. Halstead was engaged in mining, but during the latter part of his life was a traveling salesman. Mrs. Halstead, who still survives him and resides at Plainwell, was born and reared neat Logansport, Indiana, where she was educated in the public schools, and has always been active as a Seventh Day Adventist, a church to which her husband also belonged. They were the parents of seven children, of whom two died in infancy, the others being: Arthur M., of this review; B. G., of Indianapolis; D. L., of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; I. F., of Indianapolis; and Vivian, the wife of Harry Abbott, of South Bend, Indiana. Arthur M. Halstead attended the public schools of Monticello, w! here he was graduated from high school as a member of the class of 1898, and on leaving school adopted the vocation of teaching school, in which he was engaged for two years. He then applied himself to mastering the tailoring trade, became an adept in this art, and in 1912 embarked in business on his own account at Monticello. He achieved success in that city during the six years that he conducted an establishment there, but in 1918, desiring a broader field, moved to Gary, where he now has a large business, conducted under his own name, at 522 Broadway. He has attracted an exclusive and highly desirable patronage and his establishment is now one of the largest individual enterprises of its kind in this section of the state. Mr. Halstead is a past master of Libanus Lodge No. 154, A. F. and A. M., of Monticello, and a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and the Rotary Club. In his political views he is a Republican, and while he has n! ot sought office has always been ready to give his aid to any worthy civic movement. On September 12, 1905, Mr. Halstead was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Shell, daughter of John and Mary (Ross) Shell, of Monticello, the former of whom was for years a prominent coal dealer of Monticello, and died in 1917. Mrs. Shell died in 1912 and both are buried at Monticello. Mrs. Halstead received a high school education at Monticello, and for seven years was a schoolteacher. While she is a woman of superior intellectuality, she has few activities outside of her home. Mr. and Mrs. Halstead are the parents of one son: Richard Arnold, who is attending public school.

    1. Re: [INCLAY] MOORE, Wm & James... related?
    2. These people may be completely unrelated to your Moores. The name Drucilla Moore is in my family her son was in Clay County in the same time frame, so you should at least know about them in order NOT to confuse them with you own line. That being said - there was a James McCullough Jr. in Clay County starting in 1842. He came there from Ripley County, IN. He had family already in Clay County, starting from 1832. He was born in KY. His mother's maiden name was Druscilla Moore. She was the daughter of Simeon and Mary Moore. Probably married in 1783 or 1784. She died ca 1803 in Mercer or Montgomery County. His father, James Mc Sr., died in KY. Their youngest child was James Jr. James Jr.'s second wife in Clay County was Sarah Yocum. In the 1850 Clay County Census, he is shown at being 54. Researchers of his line, however, believe him to have been born in 1801. He had a daughter named Drusilla who married a Hudson/Hutson Brackney in 1850 or 1851. So - while there are many coincidences between the two lines, there certainly seems to be enough to make them separate. At least with this set of facts, you can avoid tracking the wrong families. 1. [INCLAY] MOORE, Wm & James... related?
    2. I'm brainstorming today. Or, grasping at straws :) Below is a partial census from the IN,Clay Co 1850 Census. With one family listed between them, William R. MOORE & James MOORE have the state of Kentucky in common. Later, James' dau. marries John MOORE (unk if related) The names James & Amos are used for John & Mary's son's. Also, both William & James are list in the IN, Clay 1860 Census and then again in the Illinois, Fulton Co, 1870 Census. Could William be father to James? and possibly David? David seems to remain in Clay Co after Wm & Jms leave. I am not familiar with Jackson Township, Clay Co. So any suggestions on where to look are appreciated. James & Sarah are listed below with an unnamed dau. In Sarah's obit in 1907 it is said that she had 7 children. Mary was the only child to survive to adulthood. Also, Sarah is said to be one of 13 children and was born in Henry Co., Kentucky. The obit has everything ... except a maiden name. I am thinking her family also moved to Clay Co, IN when she was a child and that she & James may have been married in that county. Is anyone related to William's other children? 3. Re: James A. Winn - he married ANGELINE (---?---) Angeline was Angeline Carter, daughter of Joseph Demont Carter and Ellen Fugate Carter. James and Angeline married 24 September 1863 in Vigo Co. IN. James' daughter Ellen Winn Kessel wrote the History of the Carter family, a copy is available in the Special Collections at the Vigo Co Public Library (Library call number follows). It is a small folder/binder shelved in the Genealogy collection. Ellen recorded her knowledge of the Carter family as well as her father's (James Winn's) decendants. I don't recall her providing any info of James' ancestors, but the descendant info is available to circa 1952. If you need info on James Winn's descendants or on Angeline Carter's line, feel free to contact me for that info.
