Hi Paula, It's a special battery pack that comes with the camera. You can by an extra one as an accessory and always have a fresh battery ready to go. I does last about 1 1/2 to 2 hours. I shut mine off when I am not going to take a photo for a few minutes and that saves battery life. I wouldn't trade it for another, but I might consider the spare battery if I was using it on a trip or something.
