Thanks Carol! All the photos on that page were taken with my Sony Digital Mavica MVC-FD73. I love it. I don't feel limited when I'm taking photos for the website or anything for that matter. The only limit is the battery life and it recharges in about 1/2 hour. The best part is that it uses 3 1/2" floppies which go right from the camera to the computer. Retail is $500. To be honest I bought a Ricoh off ebay. It isn't as fancy or expensive as the new ones out now. But it gave me a chance to try a digital camera for about $200. It does great when sending pictures e-mail. I have had a lot of compliments on the my pictures I have sent relatives and friends. Hi everyone, I think I missed some of the conversation regarding Mt. Hope Cemetery. In case it hasn't been mentioned, the cemetery office has an extensive database of everyone buried at Mt. Hope. This cemetery also comprises several other cemeteries (St. Vincent Cemetery, Mt. Calvary, etc.). A death certificate might mention a cemetery, which is in actuality, Mt. Hope Cemetery. I placed a call to Mt. Hope, and she was able to tell me via phone all the names listed. I would recommend calling ahead and having her print out all the names you are looking for. When you get there, she can give you a map, and help you locate the plot. Chris, I may try to make a trip up there in the next couple of weeks. I would be happy to take a photo. But, if you get any takers sooner, you may want to take them up on it! Hope this helps, Jennifer jblair100@aol.com
Jennifer, I believe, I started the conversation on cemeteries. What I wanted to know if there was a book, or list of the names in the cemetery. So the cemetery today is called Mt. Hope. I'm not from Logansport, so would you happen to have a address to the cemetery office and a telephone number. Charlotte, It is my understanding that St. Vincent's was once a separate Roman Catholic cemetery. There were other cemeteries in the area including Hebrew, Mt. Calvary, Owen (Pleasant Hill addition), and Velsey. At some point, they combined to become sections of this very large cemetery. The Logansport-Cass County Public Library has the pre- 1940s stone readings on microfilm. Maybe they are available through the LDS church. I can't say for certain, but most likely in a cemetery that size there would be a pauper's section. From: http://www.rootsweb.com/~incass/mthopeinfo.html "Mount Hope Cemetery is the third largest cemetery in the state of Indiana with over 81,000 burials. There are many monuments that are truly works of art. The cemetery has created a database of burials from which they can do lookups. Please contact them for further information. Mount Hope Cemetery 1800 Grant Street Logansport, IN 46947-1011 219-753-7082 Located on the north side of Logansport behind the hospital." There are photos on the above page. Hi, I, too, am interested in cemetery records for Mt. Hope. My ancestor Leander "Lee" H. Doggett is buried there according to the information I recieved on his death certificate. He died at the age of 42 on 10-14-1881 at his home on 7th Street in Logansport of "Disease of the Brain." I have recently contacted the Grand Lodge of the Freemasons to determine if they have additional information regarding deceased. Still waiting... Anybody willing to take a photo of gravestone? Will reimburse for postage, film, and mileage. Thanks, Chris Corcoran Pittsburgh, PA
Hi, Through a lot of research I believe I have track down the John Miller who lived with Wendell & Caroline Miller in the 1870 census as a rail road laborer. John died in 1889 in Logansport of typhoid Fever. I obtain his death information, which did not give much. Is there a book out on the Mt.Hope or Vincent cemetery. They are one and the same cemetery? I was wondering if John Miller was buried there with out a headstone. And was there a pauper section in the cemetery. Wendell and his family were buried in the Mt. Hope/Vincent Cemetery in Logansport. Charlotte Flock
Hello I recently was sent this method for figuring out birth dates. ***** 8870 formula Using the 8870 formula to ascertain a birth date can be a tremendous help to the genealogists, when checking gravestones or death record dates. If a gravestone or death record shows that person died May 6, 1889 and he was 71 years 7 months and 9 days old, but no date of birth listed, in order to correctly arrive at the birth date one has only to use the 8870 formula to quickly get the date of birth, rather than taking time to count backwards. 18890506 (died May 6, 1889) subtract - 710709 (age 71 years, 7 months, 9 days) 18179797 subtract - 8870 (constant) 18170927 (born September 27, 1817) Hope this helps. Sue
Hi, I am new to the list. I am researching the following individual and his family in Logansport. I am writing to request a look-up of the obituary for Leander H. "Lee" Doggett who died 10-14-1881 in Logansport. As you can see below, I have the funeral notice, but would like to get a hold of the obit to hopefully discover burial place. I am also interested in marriage records for his children. Are there marriage indexes for this time period in Logansport? Anyone on the list have easy access to them?? Would love some lookups if possible. Also, if anyone has connections to this family, I would love to hear from you.
