Hello List, I am seeking the parents and siblings of GEORGE W. BURNETT, Birthplace, Indiana. I have no idea the county. That was all I could find on census, death certificate, etc. On a tape, made when she was very old, his wife Mary told this story. George's mother was killed in an accident or died suddenly, when he was an infant. There were other children, don't know ages or how many. George was adopted by Shoemaker/Shumaker/Shoebaker??? He lived with them until the courthouse burned. It destroyed the adoption records. I don't know his age at the time this occurred. He must have been fairly young, because he was in Kansas by April 14, 1900. He married Mary M. Bell on that day. He said he couldn't have left if the records were still available for his adoption. Reason unknown. When he left Indiana, he took back his birth name Burnett, and continued to use it until his death. This is a brick wall. I would really appreciate any help or advise you could provide. If you have any information, you may Email me at JANETSQUAW@aol.com Thank you in advance for your help. Respectfully yours, Jan

Jeanne, There is no 1820 Cass Co. Census since the county was formed in 1828/9. There are no Caldwell's listed in 1830. Keep in mind that the U.S. Censuses do not list members of the household by name until 1850. Censuses prior to that list the head of household with slash marks in sex/age categories for each person in the household. I am trying to find if someone could check the 1820-30 census for Cass Co for me. I am trying to find George Caldwell and family. I would like to know if David Caldwell is his father. George was born in 1808 so he would be 12 years old in 1820 and 22 in 1830. I would appreciate if someone has a way to check this. Jeanne Silva

I just got your message. Good luck on going to the county. You must not be far away from the area? I am in another state so this is not easy for me. Like you I need to just load up my car this summer or toward the fall when not so hot and make a trip to Logansport and the area. I will get the information then and have what Info I need. You also must not be far from the Archive. Good Luck Judy n Quincy

Hi again! You can go through the list of reels and ask for that year to be sent to your library so you can view it yourself. I have a web so I just go into search and type in the name of the state and add archives. Or, Type in State name and Historical Newspapers. Then go through the list of different newspapers published during the year you are looking for and ask for your library to be sent the reel(s) with the date you believe this occured. It would seem that the Fire Department would have some knowledge of this. Maybe, even before the PD. I do not know if the coroner would have records for that year released or not. Most times the barber in the town was the surgeon because he was trainned in cutting hair. Unless the jail burning was because of a war effort I do not know if there would be a write up. I read there were Democratic and Repblican Newspapers pretty much as today actually. Therefore, they printed only thier immediate interests of the community, etc. and was limited on Birth, Deaths and Marriages reporting. Whichonly the Minister would have kept those records as I read also they were the only ones in some areas that could read. They wrote names by sound so it was reported those were created by the perso writing down the names. What is the information you have? name of person,( jail City, County) and year. I might try finding something for you. NO PROMISE(S). Like I said I have a web not a computor but I have no problems unless the web has some problem. Otherwise, Good Luck on your search. You could also place an article in the paper. You may have old timers remembering this as a child or by family telling them. Also where is this person buried? Judy in Quincy
Quincy, Is there anyone, at the State Library that will do lookups if you have the date. Charlotte JudithAnn Brison wrote: > Historical newspapers are available at the state library. Historical newspapers are available at the state library. Also contact the Fire Department, county and Police department for the area they would have records or historical data. Maybe even pictures? or, news clippings. Since there was a war going on the newspapers may have been set up again. Or, not operating. The history of the paper is very interesting which is available with the list of newspapers and the years of operation. They do inter library loans so you can view at your own library. Since this will probably be on Micro film. Good luck. Judy in Quincy
I'm hoping someone can help me with this. I have an ancestor that died in jail fire, sometime after 1913. He was arrested for disorderly conduct and while he was in jail it caught on fire and he died in the blaze. I know this from talking with distant relatives. I would love to get the newspaper article for this. The problem is, I don't know the exact date. Any ideas? His name was John Hans Norzinskay . On his birth certificate his called "Augustus Norzinskay" but I think he went by John or nickname "Hans". Thanks. I'll be sure to pay the favor forward. Sincerely, Krista Connors James
I received the following notice from Rootsweb. I have no idea how long this will be, so just be patient: ---------------- Starting at 8 a.m. PST Friday, February 23, RootsWeb will begin a planned temporary downtime for maintenance of its servers and hosting process. It will limit this downtime as much as possible, and will return with increased performance and reliability for future growth.
