Miller/March/Minneman/Lehman/Robinson/Benner/Bush/Herman/Rees/Singer Did your family travel with these families. Now, about why they traveled? More/better land; new horizons; death of the patriarch in the family, which often meant that the family farm was inherited by the eldest brother and the rest took their inheritances and went to find their own space; other relatives/former neighbors beckoned others to follow them to a new location; Philadelphia was an English city, and the Germans liked to keep to themselves pretty much, speaking their own language and following their own customs and religion (also the English distrusted the strange "foreigners" and probably made them know they should leave the area). Sometimes the Germans would travel to a place and establish a German village, and it remained that way for two or three generations. Some still have signs of German founders, in churches, building designs, etc. If you believe your family travel with one of these families listed above please contact me. I believe they came from Pittsburgh, Pa through OH. Charlotte

You would need to look for the Vet. records under both names. The one where your grandfather would have applied for a pension and under the name he had serving for him. You may not ever be able to prove the information. But you will need the Military records for each to see if there is any connection. I also might add.....The National Parks Dept. in putting together a computerized data base on the enlistment papers for the Civil War....and when that is finished they are starting on the other military records....It will be able to search by name and you will NOT have to know the start someone served from to search it....will be a every name index with the cross references that were in the records....It will not all be out for sometime but the beginnings are starting to be posted.....If anyone wants the site let me know and I will get it. I can not find it on this computer....(we have 3) Hope this helps Diana in Indiana
My Aunt told me at one point that my great grandfather served in the civil war in the place of someone else.... how would I find out more about that? Does it affect the military records? It was said he served for a member of the family that in later years formed Montgomery Wards.
Many men were rejected from Civil War Service because of Illness or injury. Medical Records of drafted and rejected men are in the National Archives, group #110. They are arranged by Congressional District as of 1863. Data may include residence, oppucation, age, place of birth, phssical characteristics or reason for rejection under remarks. I hope no one gets to upset by my forwarding this. I just felt that if anyone might be related to the Holloway family they needed to get the word of this. Diana in Rush Co. Cemetery found! This was in Tues, 8 May, Springfield MO News Leader, p. 5B: Discovery of cemetery halts roadwork--Associated Press-Kansas City-- Construction of a new highway in south Kansas City has been halted by the discovery of a small cemetery dating back to the Civil War era. State officials are anxious to find any descendants of the Holloway family who are bured in the cemetery. If the heirs can't be found, the state will have to get court permission to move the nine graves in the plot, in order to finish a new Missouri 150. Construction workers recently unearthed a marble headstone, dating from 1858, while moving a large section of water pipe. Archaeologists later found another headstone and evidence of seven other graves. The site has not been disturbed further. Please pass this on to other lists. Betty White Santa Barbara, CA
I'm looking for a gentleman by the name of Clarence L. Frey he was married to Florence and had at least one daughter named Vera Marie, their from IL and settled in Cass county, IN. Vera was b. 1916 in IL she married Vincent Miller in 1936 in Cass County. And soon afterwards got a divorce. I'm checking the counties around Cass county, to see if she might of went there. Or her parents moved to a county next door. Since I don't know what Vera's married name is after she left Vincent Miller. I thought it would be a good Ideal to check to the obits for Clarence Frey after 1936. Could there be someone who check the death index in your county for Clarence Frey. I would guess that Clarence was born around 1915. or a little earlier. Charlotte E. Flock
