    3. Someone once told me that there is a statue (or maybe a monument) of my 3rd great grandfather Hugh Woods in Cass County. Hugh and Barbara moved there around 1829 from Lawrence County, Ohio, and they lived in Cass County the rest of their lives. They were probably buried in the Fitzer Cemetery. Do any of the members of this list living in Cass County know anything about this statue? I would like to know just what it is, where it is located, and possibly receive a photograph of it. Thank you for any help you might be able to give me. Jean Dowdey Novato, California

    1. [INCASS] IN Jr. Historical Scoiety & the kids of Indiana
    2. wmmahan
    3. I know this may not be the place to ask for this kind of help but I feel that if we do not get the kids interested in the things that make up the history of Indiana we will not have a future generation to carry on for us. My son was at the Jr. Hist. Society Camp this year. The last day they told the kids & parents that there would be not more camps. It seems that the Indiana Historical Society has cut the funds and there is no money for the camps for the kids. My son went last year and learned about the History of the Pre-historical part of Indiana in the fossils and also the history of sports in Indiana. This year it was the fur trade and the Miami Indian. I know he has learned so much from the summer camps, it is sad to see them go. He Jr. Hist Society (for those that are not familiar with it) meets in the schools during the school year ( Not all grade schools participate), but for those that do grades 4-6 all over the state are able to learn about Indiana in a setting that teaches them that Indiana past has value and can be interesting to learn. The schools in Rush Co. take a 2 day spring trip letting the kids out of school to go on a Fri. & Sat trip. Some of the teachers go with the group and the school system provides the buses. (our school assistant administrator drives a bus and the have a reg. bus driver for the other one). This year they went to the north west part of Indiana. Last year it was the south east part of the state. So the kids have seen a lot of Indiana Historical sites first hand. While I am sure our school district will continue with these trips the summer camp is going to be gone. I feel that there are many in Indiana that do not even know about the Jr. Historical Society and the activities they have been doing. Maybe that is why the powers that be feel they can cut the funds to this group. We were told by the camp director that the only even "dream" of keeping the camp was flood the Indiana Historical Society with letter expressing the value of the Jr. Hist. Camps. I am asking for your help in doing this....below is the contact information.....PLEASE HELP.....the kids of Indiana need to know the value of our past. I come from several of the pioneer families in the Monroe Co. area, I know my ancestors are going to be upset that it is felt the kids of Indiana should not be taught of the states collective past Thanks for your help Sorry this is so long........ 3. I got this message from my Denny list site. I was not aware that the Social Security records search cost was going up. So I thought I would send this on....first fishing license and not record searches.....what will be next Diana in Rush Co. ----- Original Message ----- Subject: Social Security Records Applications - Obtaining under Freedom of Information Act I received an email from a fellow researcher concerning the new fees for doing searches of Social Security Records. This CANNOT be allowed to continue! I suggest you contact your Senators and Congressmen in Washington, and complain often, loudly, and vehemently! Go to: http://www.ssa.gov/foia/foia_guide.htm About 3/4 of the way down the page, you'll see the new prices for doing searches. In the past, it cost $7 for such a search; now the "basic" price is $27, which is an "average fee based on frequently requested records". Other records are based on an "hourly fee", which depends on the "grade" of the employee doing the search. GS GRADE HOURLY FEE GS-1 through GS-8 $16.00 per hour GS-9 through GS-14 $33.00 per hour GS-15 and above $59.00 per hour Can you believe it?! Also, they say, "...we let you know if your request will cost more than $250 before starting a search." My question is, how do they know "before starting a search" how many hours it will take? Sounds like more Bull from Washington to me. I figure someone isn't happy with Bush's returning some of our tax money to us, so that someone has figured out how to get some of it back into the coffers. SgtGeorge George W. Durman

    3. Hi, I found this John Miller listed below in the 1920 Cass county Census Noble twp. John Miller was born around 1831. The same time a John Miller living with Wendel and Caroline Miller in the 1870 census of Cass County, Washington twp. The John Miller at that time was 39 years old and born in Prussia, and working at the R & R as a Laborer. Or course the 1870 census does not mention the relation ship to the head of the house. So who is this John Miller. I found in the 1920 census, I really think this is the same person. It mentions he was living with a Livingston, William. as a WD. Do you have to be married to be called a WD? The only way I can think of finding any information on him would be a obituary. He would of had to pass away with the next 10 years, you would think. So is there a index for obits pass 1920? So if anyone has any solutions on how to find out information on this gentleman, please respond. 3. Miller/March/Minneman/Lehman/Robinson/Benner/Bush/Herman/Rees/Singer/Grusenmeyer/Faber/Taber Did your family travel with these families. Now, about why they traveled? More/better land; new horizons; death of the patriarch in the family, which often meant that the family farm was inherited by the eldest brother and the rest took their inheritances and went to find their own space; other relatives/former neighbors beckoned others to follow them to a new location; Philadelphia was an English city, and the Germans liked to keep to themselves pretty much, speaking their own language and following their own customs and religion (also the English distrusted the strange "foreigners" and probably made them know they should leave the area). Sometimes the Germans would travel to a place and establish a German village, and it remained that way for two or three generations. Some still have signs of German founders, in churches, building designs, etc. If you believe your family travel with one of these families listed above please contact me. I believe they came from Pittsburgh, Pa through OH. Charlotte
