I had the same problem, I think it came from a message to this message board that referenced CONN and had a humor attachment. Lena, Here is the obituary of Ellen Platt Goldsberry from the Galveston Leader. -Debby December 5, 1906 p4, c1 Ellen Platt, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Platt, was born May 27th 1820; after a lingering illness, departed this life Nov. 29th, 1906, aged 86 years, 6 months and 2 days. She was united in marriage to Isaac Goldsberry August 12th, 1838, who preceded her to the grave thirteen years ago. To this union nine children were born, five of which are living, two sons and three daughters. She was a member of the Christian church and had a pure moral character. She was a kind neighbor, a loving mother and an affectionate companion. She is survived by one brother, one sister, five children and a host of friends, who mourn her departure. Grandmother Goldsberry, as she was usually called, ha lived in this vicinity for many years and was well known. She lived to see her children married and settled down. It was a brave but unequal contest for life. But when the final summons came her spirit passed from earth as peacefully as the slumber of a babe. A precious one from us has gone, A voice we love is stilled; A place is vacant in our home, Which never can be filled. God in his wisdom has recalled The boon his love had given; And thought the body slumbers here, The Soul is safe in heaven. --- Lena Carlson <gostraka@yahoo.com> wrote: > I really appreciate everyone's suggestions on the > death record lookup that I posted a query about a > while back! I really appreciate everyone's suggestions on the death record lookup that I posted a query about a while back! My problem is that I live too far away from Logansport to go there easily myself and I was wondering if there was anyone who lived in the area who would be willing to look up Sarah PLATT and Ellen GOLDSBERRY's death records for me. I have their death dates and am interested now in finding their cause of death and if their parents names are listed on the death records, as well as whatever else might be on the record. Or if someone could tell me how much it would cost and how I would go about ordering them from the library or the health department. Thank you all so much for your help! Aaron, Can you tell us where these records for birth, marriage and death are located on line? Thanks. Jean D.
Lena I don't know if you are aware of this. There are death, birth, and marriage index records available online for Cass county. They have been transcribed by volunteers, like Cathy, who did the particular page that Platt is found on. Although the index may have errors on them, they are a very valuable tool for those of us that are from outside that area. They are transcribed exactly as they are printed, when possible. There are times when the printing cannot be read, and there may be blanks or even ??? in those instances. These transcriptions are very difficult and time consuming. Please feel free to check these index for names and dates. An omission does not mean that there is no record, but if the name is there, there is most likely a record available. Good Luck Aaron D. Thomas

I am looking for a death record for Sarah Platt. She is listed in Sprinkle Cemetery near Galveston in Jackson Township. Her death date per her stone was Feb. 1, 1883. I'm hoping someone out there can tell me if she has a death record or if she left a will when she died. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! It's official--October "Family History Month" > It is a great day for genealogists and family historians everywhere! On Wednesday, September 26, 2001, the U.S. Senate unanimously approved legislation to designate October as "Family History Month." This is a huge day for the more than 80 million Americans who are believed to be actively searching for more information about their ancestors. "Millions of Americans are researching the history of their families," said Senator Orrin G. Hatch, the Utah Republican who introduced the Family History Month resolution. "Experts say that in the United States, genealogy is now the second most popular hobby next to gardening." "It is only natural that we want to find out more about our ancestors," Hatch continued. "What better way to bring families closer together than by discovering more about the story of their own family? Like it or not, who we are today is in large part, a product of our ancestors. Hatch's bill (S.R. 160), which was co-sponsored by 84 other Senate members, commemorates October as Family History Month and encourages President Bush to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe the month of October with appropriate ceremonies and activities. "With the advent of the Internet, there has been an explosion of interest in family history," Hatch continued. "Last month alone, more than 14 million Americans used the Internet to research their family history. Genealogy Internet sites are some of the most popular sites on the World Wide Web. My church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has family history information on nearly 500 million individuals on its family history web site, FamilySearch." In light of the recent tragic of events of September 11, the timing of this legislation couldn't be more perfect, in my opinion. We need to get past being scared and celebrate who we are and where we came from. Researching ancestry is a very important part of who we are as individuals and as a nation. It can lead to family reunions, new medical treatments based on genetic links, and a sense of tolerance and understanding of individuals from different religions, cultures and backgrounds. With the exception of Native Americans, our ancestors were all immigrants to this country, coming from different parts of the globe. In the words of Senator Hatch, "By searching for our roots, we come closer together as a human family." For more information check out our Family History Month Special which includes the full text of Senator Hatch's resolution, articles on researching your family tree, projects for celebrating Family History Month and a schedule of Family History Month events planned around the U.S.
