Hopper, formerly of Nashville, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Etta Ogden, at Quincy, Ill., last Saturday, after an illness of several months. He was seventy-three years of age and a twin brother of Mrs. James M. Jones and an uncle of Mrs. Leila David, both of Nashville. 'Mart', as he was known by his many friends here, was born in Nashville. When a young man he united with the Christian church and was active in social and religious work throughout his life. His wife, before their marriage, was Miss Estella Taggart, and she and Mr. Hopper were both musicians, as were other members of their family. He at one time was the instructor of the Nashville band. As a young man he was much interested in sports and for a number of years was a leading out-fielder in the old Brown County Hustlers. For several years Mr. Hopper was a clerk in the general store of his father-in-law, Frank P. Taggart, in the building now occupied by The Miller Pharmacy. During his business career here, with his friendly disposition, he enjoyed the high esteem of all our citizens. Following the death of Mr. Taggart, he operated the store under his own name for several years before he took stock in and became a salesman for an Indianapolis wholesale firm. He and his family moved to Indianapolis thirty-one years ago. A few years ago Mr. Hopper retired from business and for five years lived with his son, Rex Hopper, who was a professor in the university at Austin, Texas. Rex now resides in New York. Mrs. Estella Hopper died at the family home in Indianapolis several years ago. A daughter, Mrs. Glen Bond, wife of a former Nashville boy, also died at her Indianapolis home several years ago. Surviving are four sons, Rex D. Hopper and Myron T. Hopper, both of New York, and Frank M. Hopper and Ira W. Hopper, both of Indianapolis, and two daughters, Mrs. Etta Ogden, Quincy, Ill., and Mrs. Iris M. Grays, Indianapolis. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon in the Montgomery Mortuary in Indianapolis at 2 o'clock. Burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis. Among those attending the funeral were Mrs. Leatha Walker, Miss Eudora Kelley, Mrs. Leila David and Paul Adams, also Mrs. Ralph Woods of Morgantown." Martin was born 1-31-1874 and died in March of 1947. He was the son of William Marmaduke and Nancy A. Morse Hopper.
