    3. Dave, Cooper was a little town between Belmont and Youno in Brown County, IN it is my guess it was near the present location of DeWar Ridge and the present Deckard Ridge Road runs near by where the town might have been. They had a post office (speaking of post office, our speaker this month at the Brown County Genealogical Society will be talking about old Brown County post offices) Cooper was in Johnson township, now part of Washington township. Hope that helps some. 3. David, It appears that George w. was getting a civil war pension. I suggest that you get his pension applications from the national archives. His first wife, Serena Coffland, was not mentioned in the Brown co. History book (1991) His second wife was Caroline Sinn who d. 1968. Her obituary is included in the Brown co Obits published by the Brown Co Historical Society. Also the obits of some of their children. The Monroe County Library probably has a copy of all books published by the Brown co. Historical Society. 3. Diane, No, I did not look around much. It is several acres. The place to look first is the records in the Historical Society Library. If you send a query to the Bartholomew county Genealogical Society, P. O. Box 2455, Columbus, IN 47202, someone will check it out for you. John W. 1. PARKS, Monroe
    2. John Thanks for your reply. I have copies of George Washington Parks Civil War Military & Pension files. It was from these that I 1st learned that Geo. had been married twice. In the Pension file he states he was married to Serena HENRY in 1868 at Schooner, Brown County, IN. The Brown County marriage record shows the date as 28 Feb 1867. Caroline SINN PARKS in her widow's pension application stated "the soldier had been previously married to Serena COFFLAND on Feb 28th, 1867 who died in July 1872." It was in the 1870 Census of Washington Twp, Brown County that I learned that they had a son, Monroe, Age 2. Few in the family know, (or a least acknowledge) that George was married twice. I heard in once, years ago, at a family gathering and it was stated that Monroe was around Bloomington for a while. That source also stated that Serena ran off with another man. I have no proof of her death other than Caroline's pension application. George stated that he & Caroline SINN were married 26 Apr 1873 at Cooper (?), Indiana by Thomas Samples. Witness' state that they "believe that by an inadvertence the record of said marriage has not been recorded in the Clerks Office of said County." I also have George's brother Irwin's pension application file made by their father, Stephen PARKS. Irwin died while in service & is buried at Duncan Cemetery as is George. Sorry for such a long email but maybe other PARKS researchers will find some interest in this. David W Foster 1218 Acacia Ct. Bloomington IN 47407 812-339-8990

    3. Nancy, I went to the Historical Society and checked the Cemetery lists. There was a Joseph A. Nelson, 1832-1857, in Flatrock Cemetery There was a Naney Nelson in the Moravian cemetery - no dates. (Morayan is a definite misspelling) I went to the Moravian Cemetery at Hope this morning and read the stone. It is really Nancy not Naney. She was the wife of Alexander Nelson and lived 1839-1874. If you man is there nobody knows about it. They have a map of the cemetery. There was a Samuel A Nelson in the Newbern Cemetery with no dates. I went there also but could not find his marker. About 1/4 of the stones are unreadable. A neighbor said that a lot of the stones were removed and used in buildings. About half of those unreadable stones might be read with shaving cream or some other technique. this would take days. In the 1976 printing of the 1888 History of Bartholomew County it is stated on page 101 that "The organization (of Sharon Baptist Church) was effected in 1823, principally through the labors of Samuel Nelson, a pious and influential pioneer." A Milton J Nelson is also mentioned. That is all I can do for you. If you want to pursue your search in Barholomew County I suggest that you mail a query to: Bartholomew County Genealogical Society P. O. Box 2455 Columbus, IN 47202 John W.
