    1. ProsserPhoto
    2. Don't you wish all your old family photos had been written on the back? My cousin just loaned me a snapshot with the following written on it, possibly by my grandmother Belle (Brummet) Zimmerman or one of her siblings: John Prosser Jr. Ida Prosser Uncle Newton Prosser Clema Giger Aunt Sarah Pruitt & her granddaughter Frances Pruitt & Grandfathers house Taken July 4 1926. John Prosser Jr is Newton Prosser's only son, and Ida (Yoder) is John's wife. Uncle Newton (Robert Newton) Prosser (1841-1930) is the youngest son of John Prosser (1797-1887), who came to Brown Co in 1836. They all lived on the family farm (W1/2NE S31 T10N R3E), which is on the So. Fork of Beanblossom Creek, just outside Beanblossom to the southeast. Clema Giger is Sarah Clementine Brummet, b 1883 in Brown Co. She and Etta are daughters of John Reese and Mary E. (Smith) Brummet. Now my queries: Who is "Aunt Sarah Pruitt?" I can't find a connection to the Prossers or Brummets for her. If Newt is "Uncle" and the house is "Grandfather's", then the house must be on the Prosser farm near Beanblossom. Does anyone know if this house may still exist? Could you verify after seeing the photo whether it is this house? John & Ida had four children, I think. Does anyone know if their descendants still live in the county? I'd like to contact them. Don Zimmerman

    1. Sandifer
    2. Hi All: Been kind of quiet lately, so thought I would post. I have found a death certificate for a William Sandifer from Brown County, IN. William died on April 7, 1895 (age 25 - b. ca 1870) in Brown County. and is buried at ????. It is signed by Nathan Browning in Needmore, IN My grandmother's first husband was a William Sandifer, and I believe this to be his death certificate. She was Rosie (Rosa) Thompson, daughter (b. Jan 1875) of William Thompson and Hester Ann David. William and Rosie were married in Nov 1893 in Brown Co. , and had one child, Ira Sandifer b.May 1894. Does anyone have any information on this Sandifer family. Can anyone tell me where William Sandifer may be buried? Rosa married my grandfather Pleasant "Sonny" Robertson sometime in 1895, probably Monroe Co. Any information on the Sandifer, or even the Thompson family, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Ron Robertson Atlantic Beach, FL ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. 3. The Indiana State Library has some microfiches which are made by amalgamating the census indexes of various states for a particular census period. I think that they have 1860 index so you could look on the 1860 combined index and see if you Isaac Wink somewhere in they left Brown Co prior to 1860. 3. I have a mystery and wondered if anyone could shed some light on it. Nancy Foreman from my family married and Isaac Wink according to the marriage database from the Indiana State Library. Nancy's family was from Monroe County Ohio, and moved to Brown County just before the time of her marriage, about 1854. I have descendant information that the Wink family was also from Monroe County, Ohio. The Wink family had a Truax grandmother. Several of Nancy's family married Truax family members, or relatives of the Truaxs. My mystery is that Isaac and Nancy Wink do not appear on later census information for Brown County. Does anyone know what happened to the Wink family and where they might have moved to after leaving Brown County? Any clues or suggestions would be appreciated. I cannot track them to any information relating to Nancy's Foreman relatives. Sharon Hughbanks

    1. Valentine Deckard family
    2. Jeanette Richart
    3. Descendants of Valentine Deckard 1. VALENTINE5 DECKARD (HEZEKIAH4, JACOB3, JACOB2, DECKERT1) was born October 11, 1850 in Brown County, Indiana, and died February 16, 1886 in Brown County, Indiana. He married HESTER ANN COMBS November 1, 1873 in Jackson County, Indiana, daughter of WILLIAM COMBS and SYPES HARDIN. She was born Abt. 1857 in Jackson County, Indiana, and died March 12, 1933. Notes for VALENTINE DECKARD: Bloomington (IN) Telephone, Tuesday, August 23, 1887. (From the clipping file at the genealogy library, Monroe County Historical Society.) "An old fashioned Pennsylvania funeral took place last Sunday in Brown County, near the Monroe County line, the occasion being the preaching of the funeral sermon of Valentine Deckard, son of Hezekiah Deckard, and Mrs. Nancy Deckard, the wife of James Deckard. Valentine Deckard, called "Felt," died on the 17th of February, 1886, and Mrs. Deckard died sometime in the spring; and as is the custom, the bodies were buried and a future time, which was last Sunday, set as the day to preach the funeral sermons. For miles around, all the people had been invited to be present, as well as friends in different parts of this and Brown counties. It was also announced that everybody who was present would receive the hospitality of the family. It is estimated that no less than 1,000 people were present by noon. Before noon the sermon on the death of Mrs. ! Nancy Deckard was preached and old fashioned singing suitable to the occasion was furnished by a select choir composed of J. O. Baxter, John Siscoe, John Hays and Louis Hays. After the sermon, the minister extended an invitation to all to come forward and extend the hand of fellowship and sympathy to the bereaved friends. With this, all present came forward, when followed every demonstration of grief as if the coffin was open before them, many mingling tears with the friends. After singing it was announced that all present were expected to take dinner with the relatives of the deceased, when an adjournment was made. The crowd was about equally divided between the six sons James, William, John, Isaac, Jacob and Andrew Deckard. At each house great preparations had been made; the horses were put up and cared for; everybody was given an excellent dinner. After noon the crowd again assembled, and the funeral oration of Felt Deckard was delivered, the same program being carried out ! as in the morning. Revs. Goodman and Barrow officiated. The services were held in a beautiful grove and it was an occasion long to be remembered, and is one that is often repeated by the good people of that locality." Valentine & Hester buried at Deckard Cemetery, Brown County, Indiana. His occupation was Farmer. Residence: Johnson Township, now Washington Township, Brown County, Indiana Marriage Notes for VALENTINE DECKARD and HESTER COMBS: Jackson County Marriage Book G page 93. 3. Hi I'm trying to locate the gravesite of Rachael (Rachel?) Arwine Hackney & John R. Hackney. Rachel and John show up in the 1850 Brown Co. Census. John married Mary Jane (Elisabeth) Rogers on 12/1/1854 in Brown Co. John and Mary Jane show up in the 1860 census. I don't know what happened to Rachel between 1850 & 1854. My guess is she died but I don't know that and have been unable to confirm her death or their divorce. Really, I'm having a heck of a time confirming anything about her & John, even their marriage. John died in 1872 ( I do have the papers that prove that) in Bedford and was buried in Bartlettsville, IN. I'm from Bedford and traveled to Brown Co. yesterday and checked out the books in the library that show who's buried where but couldn't find Rachel's name. Can you give me any help? Thanks Ken Hackney FYI The census shows that John and Rachel were from Tennessee. Like I mentioned, I haven't been able to confirm that. A couple of Hackneys (I think they were Rachel's sons) migrated to Texas with the Arwines and are buried in the Arwine Cem. in Hurst TX. I've had someone in TX check the cemetery and there is no gravestone with Rachel's name there. I've been trying to confirm John, Rachel, their marriage, their parents, etc. for the last year and haven't had any luck. The closest I've came to confirmation is Sarah Hackney listed John R. and Rachel as her parents when she applied for a marriage license to William Ramsay. But that's only one source. Again, thanks for any help you can send my way. KH

    3. Ron sorry to report that if you didn't find documentation other than an obit. that may be the only documentation there will be. I have tried to keep track of the Deckard Cemetery in Brown County and there are not much in records other than if you are lucky to find funeral home records. Most of the older cemeteries just don't have records. Even Clear Creek Cemetery in Monroe County which is very active does not have good records for the oldest section. I was lucky enough at the Deckard Cemetery to find some people who actually dug the graves for some of the people, so if there was no marker, they knew who the person was. If it isn't in the Brown County Cemetery Book or not enough proof in the obit, you may not find better information. I will try to check and see if Bear Creek has a cemetery association, but even that may not prove helpful for finding a burial. Sorry to be so negative, but that is just the way things happen. Just recently a group of people from the Deckard Cemetery donated and put up a grave stone for a dear friend. He had been without one for over 12 years. 2. Hi: Could someone please provide me a contact name and address for the Bear Creek Cemetery? I visited there a couple years back, but no one was at the church when I was there. I have information from the Bear Creek Cemetery Listing from the Brown Co Hist. Society, but the individual I am seeking is not on that list. I am looking for my ggrandmother, Hester Ann (David) Thompson. Her obit states she was buried at Bear Creek, so need to speak with someone concerning the actual records for the cemetery. She supposedly is buried in the same grave as her husband, William F. Thompson, but need to obtain some type of documentation to substantiate this info. We found William F.'s grave, but did not find any reference to Hester Ann. Thanks in advance. 3. I do not know who built the Aynes cabin, but it is now owned by the DNR and is used by the Gov. of the State of Indiana when he comes to visit the Brown County Start Park. Maybe if you contact the DNR they would have a record about who once owned the house. Hope that helps some. 3. Lewis posting your land owners was such a good idea, whish I had thought of that. The land I live on in Brown County was owned by Jesse Hall, Hezekiah Deckard, George Deckard, the Mullis family, then sold to some business in Indianapolis, my husband James Richart then bought it and now the deed reads Jeanette and James Richart. The land came full circle back to Jesse Hall's 4 great granddaughter. Many people say we live in "George Deckard's peach orchard" Jeanette
