Subject: Fw: FW: Nat. Archives price increase.. ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Thursday, March 02, 2000 12:08 AM Subject: Nat. Archives price increase.. This information came from another list that I belong to...the "Monroe Co. Indiana List " from someone in the Arkansas Genealogy Society. . I thought it was pertinent to all of us. Diana Mahan * * * * * The National Archives will be increasing the price of Military Service Records from $10 to $17.50 Pension Records (Rev. War, Civil War, etc.) from $10 to $40 Effective July 1, 2000 I was told this information by a staff member of the National Archives this last Saturday in Washington, DC. You might want to get any orders in before the increase. Lynda Suffridge, President Arkansas Genealogical Society
I don't think I'm receiving all the messages posted. For example, I never received any posting concerning a book at the Dallas Library (Issue # 11, just received) I would be interested in seeing this. Keith
Hi List, I ordered and received 4 marriage records from Brown County. I received marriage certificates, but was expecting marriage applications. I called the Clerk's office and was told that the certificates were the only records for marriages going back that far-no applications: 1885, 1893, 1898, 1899. Did the use of marriage applications in Indiana vary by county? I know that Monroe County does have applications for those dates. Is it possible the applications are archived elsewhere? Perhaps the State Library? Thank you, Norma Zanetti
What is the name of the book in the Dallas library and the page numbers? You mentioned this earlier. Is this Dallas, Texas, or some other Dallas? Thank you in advance. Cookie, in Florida

Sharon: Thank you so much for responding to my query about < AYERS, ANTHONY, POWELL, and ROUSH. > I'm doing genealogy for my children so my wife's family is included in my interests. My mother-in-law was Lillie Marie (Ayers) Smith, of Newburgh, IN. She was born in Story, Brown County, IN, on February 7, 1909, the daughter of Thomas Clifton Ayers and Sina Blanch (Anthony) Ayers. They later moved to Nashville, IN, and she graduated from Nashville High School in 1925. (She is pictured, with her high school class, in the book, "If You Don't Outdie Me," a book about Brown County.) She attended Indiana University and while in Nursing school in Indianapolis she met her future husband, Carl Albert Smith, Technical High School, class of 1921. I'm not sure but I believe Thomas Ayers' father was James Ayers. I have it in some notes which are stored away (I'm just etting back into this genealogy since I retired last fall.), but memory fails me for sure. Sina Blanche (Anthony) Ayers, born July 19, 1886, was the daughter of Samuel Anthony and (?) Roush. Samuel Anthony is pictured on the cover of "If You Don't Outdie Me," with a group of his cronies on the famous Liars' Bench which sat on the southwest corner of the courthouse square. When I married Tom and Sina Ayers' grand-daughter, Peggy Smith, in May of 1952, Tom and Sina lived a couple of blocks south of the Nashville House, almost directly across the street from the First Christian Church. I believe a Long John Silver's or Captain D's fast food seafood restaurant is now on the site. I fondly remember Nashville before it became such a tourist attraction - visited there many times. I ate at the Nashville House several times and now, here in Florida, live a few blocks from and attend church with a fellow who was a cook there many, many years ago, 'Mike' Borno, a retired Naval officer. Small world! Sharon, if you could tell me where I can obtain the book on the Ayers family, and also give me the name and page numbers of the book in the Dallas library, I would be most grateful. Thank you in advance, or, TYIA! I love this genealogy! Cookie, in Florida
I am new to the list and live in the St. Louis area. I am reseaarching the Good genealogy and find many of my ancestors were at one time in the Bartholmew Co, and Brown County areas. My grandfather was John Good, son of William Franklin Good, son of David and Permelia Good, and David was son of Jacob Good. If anyone is doing research on this line, please let me know. When do Brown Co. death certificates start and does anyone know when newspaper obits started? Myhanscestors were at one time in Tenn and Kay and some from VA and PA. My grandfather went on to Illinois. Would love to hear from anyone and open to any helps or suggestions? Dottie in St. Louis
I am researching AYERS, ANTHONY, POWELL, ROUSH, and allied families in Brown County, IN. Any help will be appreciated. Greatly! I love this genealogy! Cookie, in Florida
Due to reasons known only to computer gremlins, the index for the Daviess County 1850 census index was posted as the Monroe County 1850 census index. This mistake had now been corrected and both indexes are now posted. The page of the Society is somewhat hidden away in that it is listed under "other links" and not under "Brown County sources". Does any one know why? You can get there by going to USgenweb, then Indiana, then Brown County, then other genealogical links, then the society's page or you may go directly (if I don't make a typo) : http://members.iquest.net/~sclevenger/page1.htm Sarah Clevenger, President Brown County Genealogical Society

Sorry that you were inconvenienced. However, the Brown County county offices operate on a small budget. The tax revenue is low. The land in Brown County is scenic and a large percent of the land is off the tax rolls because it is in a state park, state forest, or national forest. The typical clerk's office these days is over worked not only keeping track of current court matters, but they have the added responsibility of keeping track of child support payments, etc resulting from court actions. The clerk's office is just busy. The Brown County clerk's office has been turning genealogical requests over to a county genealogist for years. That is just the way they do business. In addition the physical office in the Brown county Court house is so crowded that it is hard to find a space to open a large record book. The people in the office are extremely helful, but they are busy. Sorry about the incovenience, but that is the way they operate. Dear List Members, I requested copies of 6 marriage applications from the Brown County Circuit Court Clerk on Nov. 15, 1999. I'm sure I called the clerk's office before ordering copies of the records. Otherwise, I would not have known the procedure or how much money to send along with my request. I sent $6.00 ($1.00 per photocopy) and 4 stamps (realized a SASE with one stamp would probably not be enough for 6 copies). My check and letter was turned over to a Brown County researcher. I received the check and a note today from the researcher. The note: "The employees at the, 'Brown County Indiana Clerks office,' do not do research of any kind." Since when did requesting copies of marriage applications with the names of the bride and groom and date of marriage provided come to be called research? I realize that it is not the duty of the clerk to fulfill requests for copies of marriage applications; however, I have requested copies from clerk and register of deeds offices in several North Carolina counties and in other states and have never been denied - most offices consider it a service. I really don't understand. Did I send my request to the right office? Here is a copy of my letter: November 15, 1999 Brown County Circuit Court Clerk Courthouse, Main and Van Buren Nashville, IN 47448 Dear Court Clerk: I am an Axsom family researcher. Please send me copies of the following marriage applications: Delila Axsom m. Rial Martin 23 Mar 1885 James Reeves m. Ida [sic] Axsom 14 Dec 1893 (I believe Ida was Mary Ices Axsom) Ises [sic] Reeves to James Axsom m. 09 Sept 1899 ( Again, probably meant to be Ices Axsom - her second marriage) (I'm leaving out this marriage because a spouse is still living) Alexander Reeves m. Lydia Mikels 29 May 1898 John N. Deckard m. Fannie [Wilkerson] Harris 05 Nov 1901 I am enclosing a check for $6.00 ($1.00 per photocopy) and a SASE. Sincerely, Norma A. Zanetti encls. Has anyone else on the list had a problem getting copies of marriage records from Brown County? Any suggestions - other than paying $30.00 ($5.00 per record)? Norma Zanetti

Due to a limited amount of time and a lot of e-mail, I find I am going to have to unsubscribe for a while. I will be back later. If this is not the correct way to do it, please advise.
Lois Did you see this? I got it sent to me by the Brown Co. web group. Also I have some more pictures of 2 old cemeteries here. I will try to send them to you over the week-end. I am ABOUT ready to give the Cemetery of Rush Co. Web page a try. Well, I am thinking about it, we look like we will be here for a little while. One of my ancestors was Jacob R. Bruner, b. 22 Nov. 1850, Brown Co. IN, married Elizabeth Ann Morrison in 1874. She was the dau. of John & Phoebe Ann (Poling) Morrison of Ohio. She went to Brown Co. where she married Bruner. They lived at Needmore, Brown Co., then Belmont, IN where they operated a store that later burned down. Elizabeth was placed in an institution because she wouldn't accept her children. Different ones of the Bruners and Joe Poling (married Mary Alice Bruner--sister of Jacob Bruner) took the Bruner kids to raise. Eliz. Morrison Bruner died 14 Dec. 1920 somewhere in IN--I believe in Indianapolis. Jacob and Elizabeth's children were Emma Alice, Henry, and Arlington. Keith Johnston
