    3. Posted on: Brown County In. Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/In/Brown/810 Surname: Brummett, Stephens, Richardson ------------------------- A couple of corrections to my previous response: I said that Nancy Jane was the eldest daughter of William Brummett & Margaret Jane Richardson. The eldest known daughter was Elizabeth; Nancy Jane was next oldest. I also said that William died 1898. A book on Brown County wills lists a probate record for the estate inventory dated 1898. However, he died either in 1891 (according to Mabel Harp & Anna Stanger) or in 1892 (tombstone inscription as published in 'Brown County, Indiana Cemeteries'). Don Zimmerman

    3. Thanks to Chris, Gilbert, Annette and others for helping to identify Cook's Park found in an old photo I have. Chris, the post card of the "Casino at Cooks Park" is the same buliding in my photo except that the lights are not apparent. I suppose what I thought was a lake was actually Pegion Creek. Now I need to indentify the young lady in the photo. Her name is written as Ethel Traylor and information on the back of the photo says she is 17 and it is dated as 1918. My family line of Traylors are from around Evansville and Indianapolis. No one in my family can identify who Ethel Traylor is or how she fits into our line. Some of my folks are in their 90s. I am sending this note to all the Indiana lists that I subscribe to in an attempt to find a connection. If you receive more then one copy of this communique please disregard all except one. Again, thanks to all those that have helped, Paul Traylor Milwaukee Wisconsin [email protected]

    1. SHANNON: Research at holiday time?
    2. David E. Shannon
    3. Greetings to Brown County list members: I am considering a visit to Brown County during the week between Christmas and New Year's, which is one of the few times that I can be away from my work. Does anyone know what genealogy resources will be open and what will be closed? And if the Historical Society will be closed, is there any chance of arranging to use it by appointment? Can anyone suggest a least expensive motel? (this latter should probably be sent to my e-dress and not to the list.) I would appreciate any suggestions on what to do and whom to contact. I am looking for information on my g3-grandparents, who are presumably Samuel SHANNON (born c.1785 NIR - died after 1870 Brown County census) and his wife (probably a second one) named Margaret __?__. They had children Alexander, Margaret and James, all born in western PA, as well as (presumably but not proven) my g2-grandfather Robert (born 1820 in MD - died about 1903 in MN). The family came to Hamblen, Brown, IN, in the early 1840's, from a Richland, OH (there were about 10-12 such named locations in Ohio in 1840-1850). Robert married Sarah Susan GRAY, daughter of Andrew Samuel GRAY and Nancy BASS, in Brown County on June 18, 1846. Margaret married Nathan RAWLINGS, son of Thomas RAWLINGS and Rebecca WILSON, on September 10, 1857. Alexander also married, but I have not been able to figure out the name from the census page. I do not have any information on what became of Margaret, Alexander or James! I have not found information about whether Alex, James or Nathan R. served in the Civil War. Sarah Susan GRAY's parents are buried in the Bethel Baptist Cemetery in Hamblen Twsp. I do not know where the Shannons might be buried. There was also an "Uncle Will and Aunt Mary" who reportedly "settled down" in Ohio (there were about 10-12 such named locations in Ohio in 1840-1850). In the census records, near the Samuel Shannon household is a William SHANNON (born c. 1811 in NIR) married to a Mary A. PROSSER, in Brown County on May 14, 1841. (I understand that there was a Prosser family that migrated from Richland County, OH, but in this case both the wedding and the settling down happened in Brown, IN) I am guessing that this is the Will and Mary mentioned in sketchy family memoirs. William is older than Robert, but Robert is identified as the "oldest in a moderate-sized family." William may have been a son of Samuel by a previous marriage, or perhaps a much younger brother??? I have had queries about these people posted on the Brown County GenWeb pages for several years now, without a nibble. I would appreciate any leads on how to proceed with this search, and particularly how to research most effectively (at the busy holiday time!) in the area. I have never been to Nashville, Bean Blossom, etc., so any touristy tips would be fun too, expecially since it is off-season. Or should I just forget about going there in December and come back in the summer?!? Thanks, David Shannon [email protected]

    3. Posted on: Brown County In. Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/In/Brown/808 Surname: Brummett, Richardson, Stephens ------------------------- According to research of Mabel Harp and Anna Stanger published in 1989, Nancy Jane Brummett (25 Jan 1836 Brown Co-27 Apr 1896) married Benjamin B. Stephens 2 Apr 1857. Stephens is a family long associated with the Brummets with a number of intermarriages. Nancy Jane was the eldest daughter of William "Whispering Billy" Brummett and Margaret Jane Richardson, who m. 15 Dec 1831. Margaret Jane d. 1876 and William remarried. William was called "Whispering Billy" because he had a very loud voice. He was the son of George "Grancer" Brummett and was b. about 1809-11 and d. about 1898. George is believed to have been the son of James & Agnes Brummet, but there is no proof. George's wife is unknown, and was NOT Mary French as is often asserted; she married a different George Brummett. Margaret Jane Richardson is said to have been the daughter of Thomas Richardson and Nancy Quesenbery. I don't have anything further on them. There is family lore that George's brother married a part-Cherokee woman and that a son of that brother had Indian friends. Hadn't heard anything like that about this line, though. Connection with the southern Indian tribes could have occurred when the Brummetts lived in Tennessee or Virginia. The 1880 census shows my widowed GGgrandmother, Esther Brummet, living with William & his family. Don Zimmerman

    2. Hi I can't remember if I have posted this information. My Grandmother came to Brown County when a child and they settled at the foot of Bear Wallow Hill. The post office was in a small building next to their home. It was called Wakeup, Indiana. I have tattered remains of her wedding certificate that shows the location as Wakeup. Her maiden name was Parker and her husband Bush. Her grandfather's name was Tillman Bush and married to Mary Conard. Monty

    3. Hello List, Here is what I have on Isaac Shipley and his descendents. This is not my line but I have information I have researched before I knew this. I am interested in the Croslows of Brown County. The Shipleys married into this family. Thanks. Isaac Shipley was born Aug. 6, 1870, however, some records show Aug. 26, 1872. He was the son of Jesse W. Shipley and one of three wives, Sylvania Ann Crider. Siblings were *Catherine, born Sept. 24, 1863, *Mary (Polly), born Dec. 3, 1866, *Levi, born Sept. 10, 1868, died 1946, buried in Bridgeport Cemetery. *Ellender, born April 23, 1872. Some records show April 3, 1871, *James Jacob (Jake), born April 6, 1875, *Charles, born Jan 1, 1876, *Nora, born Dec. 20, 1877, *Florence Ninerva, born June 25, 1879 and *Jesse W. Jr., born May 8, 1881. The earliest we find Isaac was on a tax list in Knox County, Kentucky in 1818. He owned two horses valued at $40.00. Next, we find Isaac in 1830 in Salt Creek Township in Jackson County, Indiana. Brown County was not created until 1836. He didn't move, but the county lines changed. He does not appear on the 1840 Census and is believed to have died by that time. Elizabeth was head of the household in Brown County in 1840. Elizabeth was his widow and I believe that Polly was a nickname and not a surname. According to Census, as best as can be figured, Isaac and Elizabeth's children were *Hiram, born 1811 *Margaret, born 1812 *Jesse, born 1821 *Mary, born 1825 *John, born 1826 *Nelson, born 1828 *Samuel J., born 1834 There may have been other children between Margaret and Jesse because of the ten year spacing there. Also, Elizabeth may have been a second wife, but no proof of this. Isaac died after 1834 and before 1840. Elizabeth raised the family alone. A trememdous struggle. By 1860, Elizabeth was living in Bartholomew County, which was also formed from Jackson and Brown Counties. By the 1870 Census, she was gone. She probably died by that time. The Bridgeport Cemetery has many Shipley burials. I believe this cemetery is in Brown County There is a Shipley Cemetery in Washington Township in Brown County. Jesse (Isaac and Elizabeth's son) is buried there. I don't know where Isaac and Elizabeth are buried. The Shipley Cemetery sounds like a good bet, but I don't know for sure. Corrections appreciated.
