Patricia I think I missed the first part of this discussion on Jacksons. I have been searching for the parents of my ggrandfather, David Clemons Jackson, without success for years. He was born in IN (Co. unknown) Dec. 1822, married my ggrandmother, Hannah Blackburn, in Monroe Co. IN in April 1844. They lived in Brown Co. in 1850 & near Bean Blossom (Brown Co.) in 1860, leaving IN before 1870 & settled in DeWitt Co. IL until ca. 1875. They then moved to NE. One of their daughters was named Latitia. All but one of Hannah's siblings left IN before 1870, most settled in MO & KS. David C. Jackson was reported to have been orphaned at age 2. None of his siblings (if any) are known, but I have suspected there was a John & an Alexander because of subsequent family names. I also suspect that his mother's maiden name was Clemons. Does any of this sound familiar? Feel free to e-mail direct &/or post. Thanks. Keith Johnston

Posted on: Brown County In. Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/In/Brown/818 Surname: JACKSON, MILES, PROVIN ------------------------- This is a continuation of the Joshua Jackson querie - Joshua's father was Henry Jackson, mother Elizabeth Miles - his siblings were Elisha and Hiram (all I have found so far) Henry and Elisha family migrated to Cowlitz Co., WA - Joshua ended up in MO. Believe Henry's parents were John and Latitia (or Laticia)- am not sure where John and Latitia died possibly Indiana as I don't see them listed in WA Cemetery. Am trying to verify Henry's parents and eventually where the family came from - States involved are VA, KY, IN, MO, WA, KS Henry b. 1810 in KY his wife born in KY also Henry's father John b. abt 1791 in VA - Latitia b. abt 1790/1 in KY Elisha and his family/descendants are in Cowlitz Co., WA historical data - there is also a Jackson Cemetery there. All my Jackson's were in Brown County until at least 1860 per Census - believe the family may have started migrating after this period. Thank you Patricia Heincy E-mail: [email protected] Alternate: [email protected]
Yesterday I put out the followig, on several lists, as a 'Beatitude for Genealogists.' It is not original with me. 'Blessed are the elderly for they remember things we'll never know.' Today I received this retort, which I think is great. 'Blessed are the young, for they'll never know the things we remember.' Think about it. Touche' Cookie, in Florida

Mary Guffey: On 10/1 you were looking for the location of the above titled cemetery. My wife's great-uncle, Cloyd Anthony, has sent me the following information. He is 99 years old, a native of Brown County, and the owner of a very sharp mind and memory. He does not own a computer but if you, or any others, would like to contact him, here is his address: Cloyd Anthony 1120 East Davis Drive - Apt. # B-322 Terre Haute, IN 47802 To quote Mr. Anthony" This is isolated, neglected, inaccessible, by car. If Mary searches she had better start early morning, wear appropriate clothes, and do some hiking. I copied this from "Brown County Cemeteries." ` POWELL CEMETERY, Hamblen Twp., Brown County, Indiana Alternate Name: WILKERSON or WILKINSON Recorded November 14, 1973 Location: SE 1/4 of Section 9; Township 9N; Range 4E The east edge of the cemetery is the Brown County-Bartholomew County line. A remote, old, neglected cemetery in the woods with no access road, three-quarters of a mile from the nearest county road. There are many unmarked graves, graves marked by uninscribed fieldstones and others marked by crude stones with initials only. Hope this helps. Cookie, in Florida < [email protected] >
This is quite interesting! Rhoda GRAY married John Walker POWELL. Rhoda was the sister of my g2-grandmother, Sarah Susan GRAY Shannon, and both couples ended up in southern MN. I had never seen a reference to any POWELL in Brown County before, nor had i been able to find out any info about the origins of JWP. John Walker Powell was a Methodist minister, who established many Methodist churches around southern MN. He is described as a "circuit rider" but when his horse died, he was a circuit walker for several years, anyway. Not surprising since that was his middle name! WALKER and POWELL are the surnames of two well-known Virginians who opened up Kentucky, so I have been wondering about the connection. Would love to find descendants of JW and Rhoda! Posted on: Brown County In. Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/In/Brown/814 Surname: Winkler ------------------------- Keith, Our records show my ggg-grandfather was John Winkler from Burke Co, NC. He and his wife Sarah and children moved to Brown Co, IN around 1830. To John and Sarah a daughter was born in 1838 (Our record list her name as Jane Winkler). We have always suspected that "Sarah" was Sarah Heilman, but had no documents that gave her name. We know that the family moved to Monroe Co, and appears in the census record in one of the bloomington districts. Jane's brother John Devine Winkler is my gg-grandfather. We never found any more info on Jane, maybe because her name was actually Margaret Jane. Please let me know what evidence consist of, that you have about Margaret Jane's parents. All our records are on our site, which should now be working correctly. Link: Winkler Family Ancestry URL: <http://rtccom.net/~jwinkler/family/>
