Just back from a wintry visit to Brown County. I had no idea that it is such "mountainous" terrain, as they say. I did make some progress through land records and things, even with the library and historical society in the middle of moving their collections to new space. Looks like the new library in Nashville, just north of the county offices building, will be very nice! It took me awhile to figure out that "Township 10" in land records did not quite mean the same as Hamblen Township, so I went back a second day to locate ancestral lands to the north and northeast of Bean Blossom. A little more chance of farming there than in the extreme NE part of the county? At any rate, a summary of my updated SHANNON information can be viewed on the query page at: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/In/Brown/891 Other surnames mentioned in this query are: Prosser, Gray, Bass, Caughron, Hoagland, Rawlings, Wilson and Duhamel. Happy New Year! David
Posted on: Brown County In. Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/In/Brown/891 Surname: SHANNON, PROSSER, GRAY, BASS, CAUGHRON, HOAGLAND, RAWLINGS, WILSON, DUHAMEL ------------------------- Samuel SHANNON (b. abt. 1785) emigrated from Londonderry, NIR to Baltimore, MD, sometime after the War of 1812. There he reportedly met his (second?) wife Margaret __?__. William SHANNON (b. abt 1811 in NIR) is either a son from a first marriage or a much younger brother of Samuel. He married Mary A. PROSSER in Brown County, IN, on May 13, 1841. Their children were Samuel W., Catharine, William J., Margaret E., Mary J., and Martha. Robert SHANNON was born in Baltimore in 1819 0r 1820. He is described by a son as "the eldest child in a moderate-sized family," and presumably the son of Samuel and Margaret. He married Sarah Susan GRAY, of Brown County, on June 18, 1846. She is the daughter of Andrew Samuel GRAY and Nancy BASS from Shelby County, KY. Alexander, Margaret and James SHANNON were all born in western PA, between about 1828 and 1835. Alexander married Ariah CAUGHRON. Their children, listed as heirs in the will of Julia CAUGHRON, were Samuel and William SHANNON and Cordelia HOAGLAND. When Alexander sold land in Brown County in 1873, he was listed as residing in Johnson County. Margaret J. SHANNON (b. September 1, 1833) married Nathan RAWLINGS in Brown County on September 10, 1857. Nathan was the son of Thomas RAWLINGS and Rebecca WILSON. I have no further information on Nathan and Margaret. In 1861, Samuel SHANNON sold land as guardian for James SHANNON, described as an "insane person". Perhaps this is one of the reasons that this family was not discussed much by subsequent generations. There is a Sina (or Sarah?) M. SHANNON who married Julius E. DUHAMEL in Brown County on December 24, 1890. Who is she? In the Spring Island Cemetery in Minnesota, on land donated by Robert and Sarah Susan SHANNON, there is a headstone for a James H. SHANNON (abt 1844 - 1888). Although the inscription reads something like "Now he rests from all his troubles," his age as given would not match that of insane James above. I had thought that he might be a son of William and Mary, but not so listed in the 1850 census. I need to confirm that Samuel and Margaret were indeed the parents of my Robert SHANNON. And I would like more information on all these people. Other descendants would be a delight (well, one hopes)!
