I've been following the cemetary discussion with interest (while procrastinating on other projects). When I was in elementary school, I walked through Cedar Hill cemetary to get to school at Central. I always knew it had been a cemetary. Right by the alley, where it comes out on Park Street, there were two or three headstones, they were flat in the ground. Regarding another cemetary, outside Lebanon on State Rd. 39, Bethel Cemetary...my great grandfather, Ivan Cohee, used to be caretaker there. My dad and uncle remember helping him dig graves in the late forties, early fifties. Ivan's parents and grandparents are buried there. My dad said that Ivan's parents used to be close to the highway and that Ivan moved them. They now lie near the back of the cemetary. I wonder if my great grandfather was anticipating progress. That cemetary is in pretty good shape still. I always try to visit at least one cemetary every time I am in Lebanon. It's good to see whether the old ones are still in use and to be on the lookout for development of the town that might have a negative impact on our cemetaries. Jami Davis

You would have to find enough people and then do they still live in Lebanon and vote. I for one do not have any direct ancestors buried there, just an aunt, but I am still apauled at the fact that they did that. Park my big toe, it seems to just be a piece of land that is mowed and used for parking of cars for the July 4th parade, after I found out about it, I thought about printing flyers and put them on all the cars that were parked there?? Be kind of neat if a bunch of peope would make a float of a cemetery with a large tombstone saying Cedar Hill on it. Not to be morbid, but with a theme to honor the dead soldiers that were buried there. Kim > > > ==== INBOONE Mailing List ==== > This mailing list is hosted by Rootsweb. Well, I am surprised they let people park cars there! I felt sorta funny in JR High running over a grave yard. I don't think I could park my car there! I bet those that do don't know it was a cemetery.I think it is a good idea to print the flyers and let them at least know it was a cemetery. They wouldn't let people park cars on Oak Hill! Would they? No one is alive that has direct ancestors buried there only distant or allied family members.Looks like the last buried there was in 1891. If you want to do something contact the Genealogical Society,Boone Historical Society and the DAR. Get them involved. Also the Sullivan Museum in Zionsville. They have a lot of contacts with people that have ancestors in Boone. Boy, we sure did start something here, didn't we. Hi Again Kim, One of the Ladies working in the office at Oak Hill is a cousin of mine. I found this out after I went there to get a copy of the Byroad's and Purdue's burried there. I mentioned that Most of My Byroad ancestors were burried in there and she said that Hers were too. She told me that she is Cynthia Byroad's Granddaughter and I told her that I am Pansy Byroad Purdue's Granddaughter. Cynthia and My Grandmother I believe were cousins. My Grandmother's parents were Thomas Neal and Susan Ullery Byroad. GGrandpa and GGrandma Susan had 2 older children who both died at a young age, Grace dying at age 3 years and Edward who died before he was a year old, both dying the same year. I have yet to find out where and when they were burried. Is there any way of finding this out? They were the oldest children then Alonzo, Adeline(Addy) and then My Grandmother was the youngest. Grandma and Uncle Alonzo and His wife are burried in Oak Hill, I wonder if Grace and Edward were too even though they are not listed in the paper I have of the ancestors who are burried there, or if they could have been some that were burried in Cedar Hill. I would really like to find out for sure. Hi Kim, Most all of my Byroad and Purdue Ancestors were from Lebanon Indiana. A lot of them are burried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon including My Mother and her Parents and brothers. I did not know there was a Cedar Hill Cemetery either. I am so upset at the desecration of any grave. What are people thinking of when they go and desecrate graves like this? I wonder what they would feel if it was their own grave being done this way? These are the places our and their ancestors chose as their final resting places and they should all be kept as they were when they were burried there. I sure hope no one does my grave that way, for I will surely come back and haunt them all. Mary Ann, was the Thomas Neal a relative of Stephen Neal? I looked in the cemetery record books that I have and do not see Grace and Edward listed. There is a Grace Neal but she is not the same one. I remember her. Donnagene
If I remember right, at the time no one or group was caring for the cemetery and it was overgrown and a mess. So the city took it over. Most of the stones could not be read as they were of the material that was crumbling etc. Today I don't think this would happen. Most places have a cemetery association that cares or sees that the ground is cared for. Who looks after Brown's Wonder cemetery since the church is gone? I haven't lived in Lebanon for many years. Everyone knew that that was a cemetery at the time it was cleared. I was too young at the time to really care. My husband and I both have ancestors buried there. And yes, when we were in Junior High our Gym class went there too. Ok, you metioned old 52. What I think of as the city dump was at the end of South Meridian St. That was what I pictured in my mind and I couldn't remember a golf course being built there. Now I am following you. I think when the article was in the paper in the 50's it told of the soldiers buried there and some of the people. Donnagene >> Folks, this activity is at the heart of the present PETITION to save burial grounds. The PETITION can be found on the Internet, its URL I do not have to reproduce for you, due to my recent computer hard drive crash. We have been asking people top support FEDERAL Legislation that would protect ALL burial grounds in America from such destruction as CEDAR HILL Cemetery Maybe someone can repost that URL for new listers and all will join in such a PETITION. I supported that PETITION back in 1998. Some States now have pending legislation to improve their laws. The stones were stored for a period of time and then removed to the city dump. Which is now a golf course. It has been said that people that live there where the dump was, and near the golf course have found parts of the tombstones buried in their yards. Cedar Hill Cemetery does not exist anymore as a Cemetery. The stones were removed in 1954 and the grounds are used as a park and maintained by the city of Lebanon's Park Department. I don't know what happened to the stones.
