Do you have a clue where they were from? Have you tried posting to either the Guckenberger or Guggenberger list here on rootsweb? The earliest Guckenberger I can find came from the area of Frankonia in Mittelfranken, UtterFranken. Specificaly in Riecholzheim (on the Tauber) (Now north Baden) in 1422. There is also Guggenberg village located in Bayern but is very close to the Baden border and is located near but west of Reicholzheim, near the Erfa River. I have found the Surname in the German Genealogy site and the LDS FHC search site. in the 1500's. Surnames were given or adopted about the 1350's in this area, if in fact the Guckenberger were of Serf status or possibly earlier if they were nobles. As there seems to be several villages by the name of Guggenberger I will assume that it is possible they family came from Nobel desent. As the General location for the family seems to be a 30 mile Radius of WUERZBURG I would think this is probably about where the family originated. But there are more villages and Surnames Guckenberger / Guggenberger to the South around Muenchen in Bayern. Just on a cursory search, These families seem to come to those area's "after" the 1500's. migrating southward, possisbly as a result of the famine in the 1600's.
