I bought it on Ebay; it just has the insides, but it is full of Indiana biographies. I am not researching this family, just thought I would share. I do not know anymore about these families or these surnames. NOTE: I don’t know if there is any additional mention of this family in the book, it has no index. I do not want to sell this book. I am typing the biographies from it. Typed by Lora Radiches: Surnames in this biography are: McKain, Sprague, Gosvener, Allen, Lucas, Mulford, Barkley, MAURICE C. McKAIN, physician and surgeon, has practiced at Columbus in Bartholomew County since 1922. He is a native of Jackson County, Indiana, and his people have lived in Southern Indiana for nearly ninety years. Doctor McKain was born at Brownstown, Jackson County, August 19, 1892. The McKain’s, who are of Scotch ancestry, they settled in Virginia, where they lived on a plantation for many years. The first generation to come west were David and his wife, Ruth (Sprague) McKain, who, with their son, Edward McKain, the latter of whom was born in Virginia, September 12, 1809, moved to Belmont County, Ohio. Edward McKain grew to manhood there. For many years he was captain on a passenger steamboat plying on the Ohio River. He married Emaline Gosvener, an Indiana girl. Later they settled in Jackson County, Indiana, where Doctor McKain’s father, David M. McKain was born. David M. McKain for many years was a businessman at Brownstown. He married Anna B. Allen, an! d their two children were Maurice C. and Ida Lee, the latter the wife of Charles Lucas. Maurice C. McKain attended the grade and high schools of Brownstown, was graduated Bachelor of Science from Moores Hill College of Indiana in 1914, and took his professional work in the medical department of Indiana University, where he received the M. D. degree in 1918. At the beginning of his senior year he enlisted in the Medical Reserve Corps and for sixteen months was in the Government service, with assignment of duty in the City Hospital at Indianapolis. He had his experience and training as an intern in the Deaconess Hospital of Indianapolis and the City Hospital. Doctor McKain has done post-graduate work in the Chicago Post Graduate Hospital and the New York Post Graduate School of Surgery. He spent some months in 1931 studying in Europe. In September, 1919, he returned to Brownstown and was engaged, in private practice there for three years. In September, 1922, he located! at Columbus, at which time he limited his work to the practice of general surgery. Doctor McKain is a member of the County, Indiana State and American Medical Associations. He belongs to the Phi Chi and Alpha Mu college fraternities, is affiliated with the Masonic Lodge and Knights of Pythias at Brownstown and the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks at Columbus. Doctor McKain married Hazel E. Mulford, of Milan, Indiana, daughter of John Walter and Maria (Barkley) Mulford. Her father was descended from very early pioneer settlers through both his mother’s and father’s families. Her mother belonged to the Barkley family of County Antrim, Ireland, and Scotland. The Mulfords on coming to Indiana settled in Dearborn County. Mrs. McKain is a graduate of Moores Hill College and had post-graduate work in Indiana University. The four children of Doctor and Mrs. McKain are Jean, Fern, John and David.
