Joined from Jonesville. At 16 he enlisted ind Co A of the 50th Indiana Volunteer Regiment. Served in Bowling Green, KY. Captured at Mundordville. Paroled and sent to Indianapolis. Served at seige of Little Rock. Discharged in Jan 7, 1865. His stepfather was killed and his brother wounded in this war. Got into the saw milling business after he got out of the army in 1865. Settled in Bartholemew County in Jonesville on Indiana Sideroad 11. Built one of the finest homes in the area. Member of the German Lutheran Church. Applied for pension Nov 5, 1883 : Invalid Appn 499217 Cert 317 161 Indiana. Had a copy of this pension record. Killed by the train near his home in 1907. Buried in Garland Brook Cemetery Columbus, Indiana. Widow applied for pension July 22, 1907 : Appn 873694 Cert 643 579 Indiana. Son Edward got the house. Amy said he suffered mental problems, likely related to the death of his father, and died in a mental institution in Madison, IN. Matta had to support the family during the depression.
