IN Census? He is listed in 1880 with his father-in-law ( his wife Kate is listed as an adopted daughter) with no children. There is another David Erwin/Irwin listed in 1900 IN Hope, Bartholomew Co. Census born in 1845 in OH married to an Ellen A. The 1910 Posey Co. Census list a David Erwin married the 2nd time to an Amelia. 1910 Bartholomew Co list David Erwin/Irwin again in Hope. I believe that you have conflicting information...due to the spelling of the name. The one in Bartholomew Co. is Irwin... Posey Co. Erwin. The one from Posey Co. wasn't old enough to serve in the CW. The one in Bartholomew Co was. Does the wives names jive??? Hope this helps.
