My grandfather, Ed Snyder, owned a couple of restaurants while he lived in Columbus. One I think was called the Blue Bird Cafe, another maybe Snyders Drive In, I am not sure now, I am going from memory. My mother, Nancy Jane Snyder, worked after school there during the early 1940's. My mother and grandfather are both gone now, and I would like to hear from people who may have eaten there, been friends with them, and maybe has a good story to share with me. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers this place. To go even further back, my great grandfather Marion Ulysses Snyder and his wife Sarah Jane (Hitchcock) Snyder owned or managed a grocery store for many years somewhere between Hope and Columbus. Does anyone have any info on that? All memories large or small welcomed!! --------------------------------- Get your email and more, right on the new Yahoo.com
Does anybody have access to city directories for Columbus, IN (Bartholomew County) for about 1910? I am attempting to date and document a photograph passed down in my family depicting an establishment with the sign "M.U. Snyder the Grocer." I believe this photograph was taken about 1910, since the 1910 US census lists the occupation of Marion U. Snyder as grocer, working on his own account. Also, living very near M.U. Snyder in 1910 was his sister Addie C. Snyder and her husband Louis (also spelled Lewis) Franklin Brooks. In the 1910 census, Louis F. Brooks' occupation is listed as "grocery" and he is an employee. Louis Franklin Brooks is standing in front of the grocery store; he is the middle-aged portly gentleman wearing mustaches and a vest (2nd man from the right). In the 1900 census, Louis F. Brooks is listed as a tannery operator and in the 1920 census he is listed as being in real estate sales; he died in 1921 (he was born in September 1861). That is why I estimate the photograph as dating from about 1910. I do not know the exact street address of this building -- but the street number 513 is clearly visible in the photograph -- I would like to have the correct street name and any other information which may have appeared in a city directory. The family of Marion Ulysses Snyder lived in east Columbus and Hope at various times, so the grocery business, which I understand operated for 26 years, could have been in either town (but probably in Columbus). Also, approximately what range of years was it in operation? Also, if anybody is connected to this particular Brooks family, please contact me -- so far, haven't located anybody doing research on this particular line, even though Louis' parents had at least 8 children. The parents of Louis Franklin Brooks were John Brooks, born abt 1840 in IN, and Nancy Catharine Lowe, also born about 1840 in either KY or IN; his siblings were born from about 1863 through 1879 and were named, in birth order: Laurence E., John, Warren M., Horatio, Maggie, Stella A., and Hurschel. I do not have any other information on this Brooks line (their parents, marriages, children, etc.). I do have complete information for the descendants of Louis Franklin Brooks and Addie C. Snyder (their only child who survived beyond early childhood was my paternal grandmother, Kathryn Brooks, wife of George Earl Perry, Sr.). Lisa, I am sending you a copy of this photograph via snail-mail. Should go out in the mail before Christmas! All the children were at the bedside when Mr. Howerth died. Mr. Howerth had been well known throughout this county and Brown County for years as a tireless worker in the Methodist Church, and as a singer at revival meetings. As such, he has visited practically all the churches and communities of the county and was known and loved by all. His death was said to have been in keeping with his long, unselfish life. Through his three weeks of illness he never murmured a word of complaint, and he maintained to the last moment the faith that had upheld him throughout his life. Mr. Howerth was born in Bolton, England. He came to America in the year 1830, and lived variously in the states of New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio for several years. However, 61 years of his life were spent in Indiana, first in Brown County and then in Columbus and East Columbus. Mr. Howerth dwelt in Illinois a short time. Mr. Howerth was proprietor of the old Madison House at the corner of Fourth and Franklin Streets for a few years. He also served in postmastership in Brown County during the presidencies of Lincoln and Buchanan. In 1850 Mr. Howerth was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Amelia Bright in Ohio. Mrs. Howerth died in 1885, and he never remarried again. Mr. Howerth was a man whose death will be grieved wherever he was known.
