Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/lh.2ADE/2381.1 Message Board Post: Hello Brad, Certainly very interesting the Discovery you have made. Do you have a clue where they were from? Have you tried posting to either the Guckenberger or Guggenberger list here on rootsweb? The earliest Guckenberger I can find came from the area of Frankonia in Mittelfranken, UtterFranken. Specificaly in Riecholzheim (on the Tauber) (Now north Baden) in 1422. There is also Guggenberg village located in Bayern but is very close to the Baden border and is located near but west of Reicholzheim, near the Erfa River. I have found the Surname in the German Genealogy site and the LDS FHC search site. in the 1500's. Surnames were given or adopted about the 1350's in this area, if in fact the Guckenberger were of Serf status or possibly earlier if they were nobles. As there seems to be several villages by the name of Guggenberger I will assume that it is possible they family came from Nobel desent. As the General location for the family seems to be a 30 mile Radius of WUERZBURG I would think this is probably about where the family originated. But there are more villages and Surnames Guckenberger / Guggenberger to the South around Muenchen in Bayern. Just on a cursory search, These families seem to come to those area's "after" the 1500's. migrating southward, possisbly as a result of the famine in the 1600's. I find: GUCKENBERGER, 1546 Rothenburg o.T. (on the Tauber) Mittelfranken GUCKENBERGER, * b. About 1535 m. 21.09.1566 Marktsteft Unterfranken, Bayern GUCKENBERGER 1550 Buchbrunn, Unterfranken which is about ten miles east of Wuerzburg. on the River Main. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = These area's are also very close to the Wurtemberg border as well. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Emigrant identification 150260 First name Johann Last name Guckenberger Emigration year 1839 Last place of residence Grünsfeld (Baden) Profession Gastwirt Archive Generallandesarchiv Karlsruhe Best regards Kurt
Hello Robbintina: I haven't been following your line, so don't know of any relationship with mine. However, several generations back I have a Mary Reid (and various spellings) in Hope, IN (Bartholomew Co and surrounds) who came from Forsythe Co, Salem, NC -- her family, as many of the others in the area, were Moravians who originally came into the US as early as the late 1600's, usually in ports in NY and PA, first settling in Bethlehem, PA. When that Moravian community became over crowded, the group funded and founded the community in NC. When that community began to be crowded, a large group came to IN to found the community of Hope, and the Moravian Church which still exists today, along with a grave yard with many burials. No time to research this further (on my way out of town again!), but I hope this helps. If you would like more info, let me know and I can dig in my files later (the above info is from memory). I am looking for a family of Vanarsdals that lived in Taylorsville from mid to late 1800's. I hope to gain more names and dates from church and school records. In the mean time, can you find any info on Reverend Michael Vanarsdal mentioned in a Methodist newspaper called "Western Christian Advocate"? I got this lead from Mary Ellen Grossman, I need to find out the names of his siblings and children. I hope one of his sons is the father of the family in Taylorsville. I have way too much to send you on the message board, I am going to use your e-mail address and send an attachment, if that is alright with you. dkuhlman@bcremc.net wrote: This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/lh.2ADE/2570.2 Message Board Post: Dug around in my files last night after I posted the first reply, and did find a copy of an article from the Edinburgh paper in 1972, about the history of Ohio Ridge. You were correct that it was originally a Lutheran congregation, St. Mathews. The first church was built in 1857, jointly by both the Lutherans and the United Brethern; followed by an unhappy period where the U.B.s, being in the minority, were put out. This caused lots on grief and discontent on both sides. The U.B.s met in the school for awhile, then disbanded entirely, and the Lutherans took full ownership. Their membership continued to decline, and they only met sporadically. The last Lutheran minister left Ohio Ridge in 1898, and the Methodists used the facility for some time after that. I do not know of any existing church records from the St. Michael's congregation, but perhaps having the NAME may help you track them down through Missouri Synod. ==== INBARTHO Mailing List ==== Bartholomew County, Indiana Message Board... http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.states.indiana.counties.bartholomew ============================== Census images 1901, 1891, 1881 and 1871, plus so much more.
