"Indiana Marriages, 1845-1920 ..." lists a marriage between Michael LEWIS and Emily MALOY, 20 Jan 1853, Bartholomew County, book C-5, page 220. His wife in Census 1860, Flat Rock Twp, is indeed "Emely ... 34" [thanks, DH!] There were five children at home. If it is indeed the same man who married Maria Elizabeth ROMINGER way back in 1921 -- I can only say, that's seventeen the hard way. I believe Elizabeth REED (1803-1833) had a ROMINGER grandmother, Elizabeth Barbara ROMINGER RIED (1741-1829). So Elizabeth REED and Maria Elizabeth ROMINGER (1794-1830) were something like first cousins, once removed. Does _Rominger's Roam_ mention Armstead and/or Elizabeth among the ROMINGERs named REED? Or does it not follow them that far downline?

A source called "Notes in church register of members who moved to Indiana co.1750 - co.1860 gives a lists of individuals who "moved away." It states (parentheses is theirs) "Michael Ludwig (Lewis) and Elisabeth, m.n. Ried, and 1 child (with 4 others by his first marriage.) I checked over Michael Lewis's that a had who married in North Carolina and found a Michael Lewis (May 19, 1799-December 11, 1860) who married Maria Elizabeth Rominger on February 8, 1821. According to Rominger's Roam, a book that several families that descend from Romingers and live in the Hope area, Maria E. died in North Carolina on November 3, 1830. Michael and three children, Josiah, Mary and Caroline moved to Bartholomew Co. It notes that he later marriage Malinda Gentle and they were living in Bartholomew Co. in 1840. The dates of birth and date are consistent with the years found in the Ried family record. However no mention is made of Armstead or Elizabeth Ri! ed (Reed). The dates though leave room no Elizabeth to have been married to Michael between the two marriages listed. I can't confirm based on the information that I have that the two Michael Lewis are the same though it appears highly likely.

It was precisely the information I needed. Casting about for more possible clues, there are two "Indiana Marriages Through 1850" listing Michael LEWIS as groom: 5 Jan 1834 to Malinda GINTLE; 11 Jul 1850 to Elizabeth MARGASON. Census IN 1850 Bartholomew finds "Mitchael Lewis ... 61 ... NC" with blended family in Flat Rock Twp: wife is Elizabeth; step-children are MORGASONs. There were four LEWIS children ages 10-13. For Armstead's father to remarry twice after my ancestral aunt passed away seems a very plausible afterstory. Appreciatively; Laura

He died February 22, 1917. He came to Bartholomew Co. at age 1 1/2 from North Carolina. He married Elizabeth Carter in 1856 and they had 3 children, Augustus L. who died at age 1, Leander who died at age 50, and Lucina: 1 granddaughter Mrs. Leila White: 2 great grandchildren, May and Annette White who live in Detroit. His wife died December 26, 1901. He married secondly to Delila Price October 7, 1909. He was one of 17 children. Funeral service was February 24, at the Hawcreek Baptist Church with burial there. According to the Ried family page that you cited Joseph Ried had a sister, Elizabeth (1803-1833) who married Michael Lewis (1799-1860). Perhaps this is the connection. If so, I would hope that Michael Lewis married at least twice to father 17 children given Elizabeth's age at death according to this record.

I'm thinking this must be the same man who was, in Census 1850, listed in the household of my ancestor, Joseph REED (1812-1894) m. V. Florina ZIEGLER b.1814). "Omsted," as his name appears there, was age 18, born in North Carolina. Could Florina have have been wed previously to her marriage to Joseph REED, Bartholomew Co., Dec 1835? In the marriage index, she appears as "Florine L." Was Armsted Joseph's step-son? Also in their home for every census 1850-1870 was Florina's mother, Mary ZIGLER (Anna Maria (ROMINGER), 1785-1872, widow of Daniel ZIEGLER). Also a disabled niece, Mary Cyrilda/Erlida/Varilda REED b.ca.1847 -- I'm ??guessing?? this was doubly-related Mary Zynilla REED (1847-1897), dau of David Samuel REED m.Caroline Catherine ZIEGLER??? (per RIED family page at http://www.fmoran.com/) I'm related through Joseph & Florina's son, Sanford A. REED m. Elizabeth (Mrs. Frank DRAKE) who went to Webster Co. Missouri in the early 1880s. Thanks so much; Laura
