I bought it on Ebay; it just has the insides, but it is full of Indiana biographies. I am not researching this family, just thought I would share. I do not know anymore about these families or these surnames. NOTE: I don’t know if there is any additional mention of this family in the book, it has no index. I do not want to sell this book. I am typing the biographies from it. Typed by Lora Radiches: Surnames in this biography are: HAILWAY, Kitzmiller, Hailway, Windhorn, Spaugh, WILLIAM H. HAILWAY is one of the well-known and popular citizens of his native County of Bartholomew, where he has held various offices of public trust and where he is now giving a characteristically loyal and efficient administration as postmaster of the vital little City of Hope. Mr. Hailway was born in Bartholomew County on the 11th of November, 1873, and the place of his nativity was the parental home farm in Columbus Township. He is a son of Henry and Sarah (Kitzmiller) Hailway, both of whom are now deceased. Henry Hailway was born and reared in Germany and settled in Indiana in the year 1866, he having become one of the enterprising and successful farmers of Bartholomew County and he and his wife having here remained until their death, their children having been five in number. William H. Hailway early gained close fellowship with the varied activities of the home farm and the rural schools in Flat Rock Township afforded him his preliminary ed! ucation. In the early stage of his independent career he continued his active association with the farm industry, and in 1911 he turned his attention to the contracting business in road construction. With this line of enterprise he continued to be identified until 1922, he having in that year resigned his office of township trustee, to which he had been elected in 1918, and January, 1922, having marked his appointment to the office of county highway superintendent, a position that he retained four years and in which he gave a well ordered and progressive administration. After his retirement from the office he gave one year to the management of his farm and then, in 1926, he was appointed postmaster of Hope, the office of which he has since continued the efficient and popular incumbent. Mr. Hailway is a member of the Tn-State Postmasters Association and the National League of District Postmasters; his political allegiance is given to the Republican party, in the local! affairs of which he has been active and influential, and he is essentially loyal and public spirited in. his civic attitude, with a constant manifestation of his deep interest in all that touches the welfare of his native county and state. He was for several years a member of the board of directors of the Bartholomew County Fair Association. Mr. Hailway married Miss Elizabeth Windhorn, born in Ripley County, and reared in Bartholomew County. They have two children: Alma received the advantages of the celebrated Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, is a talented musician and has been a successful and popular teacher of music. She served as assistant postmaster of Hope, under the administration of her father, until her marriage to Jasper Spaugh, who is one of the progressive exponents of agricultural and horticultural industry in Bartholomew County. Miss Rema, the younger daughter, remains at the parental home.

I do not know anymore about these families or these surnames. NOTE: I don’t know if there is any additional mention of this family in the book, it has no index. I do not want to sell this book. I am typing the biographies from it. Typed by Lora Radiches: Surnames in this biography are: Hoover, Briles, Rambo RUFUS A. HOOVER, M. D. The progressive and attractive little City of Hope, Bartholomew County, claims Doctor Hoover as one of its representative physicians and surgeons and as a valued citizen who takes loyal interest in all things pertaining to the communal welfare. Doctor Hoover was born in the state of North Carolina, July 5, 1872, and is a son of Thomas and Catharine (Briles) Hoover, both of whom were born and reared in North Carolina, where their marriage was solemnized and where they continued to reside until about the year 1876, when they came with their six children to Indiana and made settlement in Hamilton County, where Thomas Hoover became a successful farmer and merchant. Dr. Rufus A. Hoover was a child of about four years at the time of the family removal to Indiana and in Hamilton County he was reared to adult age, his public school advantages having there included those of the high school at Sheridan, and he having thereafter continued his studies along academ! ic lines by attending the University of Indiana. In preparing for his chosen profession he went to the City of Chicago and entered the medical department of Loyola University. In that fine institution he was graduated as a member of the class of 1911 and after thus receiving his degree of Doctor of Medicine he further fortified himself by serving as an interne in leading Chicago hospitals, his internship diploma having been awarded in the year 1912, and he having then returned to Indiana and established himself in the general practice of his profession at Bippus, Huntington County. There he remained nine years, during the next year he was engaged in practice at Lapel, Madison County, and he then, in 1922, established his residence at Hope, where he has built up a substantial and representative practice that marks him as one of the prominent physicians and surgeons of Bartholomew County. Doctor Hoover has membership in the American Medical Association, the Indiana St! ate Medical Society and the Bartholomew County Medical Society. In the World war period he served as medical examiner for the draft board of Huntington County, was an officer of the county chapter of the Red Cross and had membership in the Medical Officers Reserve Corps of the United States Army. He is a Democrat in politics, is affiliated with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and he and his wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church in their home city. Doctor Hoover’s marriage to Miss Josephine Rambo was solemnized in Madison County, Indiana, and they have four children: Frances, Katherine, Charles and Thomas. Frances is a member of the class of 1930 in the Hope High School; Katherine is there a member of the class of 1932, and the two sons are grade students in the Hope schools.

-----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, February 08, 2003 6:24 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Letter From IGS President, Betty Warren - HB 1540 Betty Warren, President of the Indiana Genealogical Society, addressed members of the IGS Board and friends in her email below. I received permission from her to send her email to genealogists and friends. We are asking you to please write your representative in the state of Indiana and/or attend Wednesday's session concerning HB 1540 at the State House in Indianapolis. For more information go to the IGS web site at http://www.indgensoc.org/HB1540.html to learn more. And a special thank you to all the Indiana mail list administrators for your support in sending emails to your mail lists concerning HB 1540! Darlene Anderson IGS East Central IN District Director Dear friends of genealogy and IGS board members, If you would take some time to check out the IGS website (www.IndGenSoc.org), you will see that Meredith (thank you for fast action!) has posted the amendment digest proposed Wednesday February 5th to *satisfy* the needs of genealogists in relation to the closing of public access to the IN county birth (100 years) and death records (75 years). If you have not seen the bill yet, please, do read it. I gave my testimony in the House of Representatives Chamber on Wednesday in opposition to this bill and the amendment. Even though the use of the word genealogist in the amendment looks good, I strongly believe that without specific legal language that gives a definition and description of genealogist, there would be no access because of misinterpretation and misuse. The fact that they offered the amendment is a good sign that dialog is open, as we petitioned for in the IGS resolution. I, personally, am still opposed at this time. The bill has been held over in committee, a small victory for the day! However, it is scheduled to be heard again on Wednesday, February 12th at 10:30 in the House Chamber. It is a large room, but I would like to see as many of you there as humanly possible. You would not have to get up in front and testify (except you, Curt!). But, if we can fill that room (and the balcony, too would be nice), it would be a wonderful show of support. There is the possibility that they will put it off to another day, so do check the Sunday paper for the list of bills to be heard that week and we will keep in touch with Meredith to keep the website current. There is also the possibility that they would wait until the day of to cancel, which we cannot foresee. But, showing up would still send a very powerful message. Please continue with your email messages to the committee in regard to the amendment. They are being noted! Also, take the time to write a letter, if you can. Please do not use form letters or xerox copies; that would also be noted. Legible handwritten notes get the most notice, I am told. Wilma, please especially thank your local Representative Andrew Thomas for his support. Unfortunately, he is not on the committee, but he is a genealogist! And, he took the time to attend the hearing (even though he was not feeling well) and help support us. Nancy Hurley of the IGS Legislative Committee, myself and Curt will be preparing information for testimony; we will keep you posted of events as soon as we can. If you can help with the information we are gathering, please contact Nancy. Find her email on the IGS website or in the list above. And, please, mark your calendar to attend the hearing on Wednesday! Parking will be difficult downtown, as most of the garages are used by the legislators and *restricted from public access* :>) There is not much available on the street either. The old bus station garage at Ohio and Capitol is open. If you plan to stop in at the History Center later in the day, use the IHS lot off of New York. Car pool, if that helps. I will be coming from work that morning. Thank you for your continued support. Maybe we can stop this in committee! At the very least, we can let our voices be heard! Betty
