Kay & Marg, I check old Fort Wayne City Directories which list county residents in the back. I followed on family from 1917 through 1930. Up to and including 1924 they lived in Sheldon. In 1925 - 1930 they were listed as living in Yoder. The name must have changed 1924/25. >From a book at the library called, "The Towns of Allen County": Sheldon, or Yoder, in Pleasant Twp, came into being in 1869 after the construction of the Fort Wayne and Muncie Railroad, now the Nickel Plate. The original plat was made by a carriage manufacturer who had arranged with the railroad for siding facilities for his business. The village was named Sheldon in honor of the superintendent of the railroad. The railroad in later years changed the name of the station to Yoder. The carriage business flourished and built an enviable reputatuon for their wares. The carriages were sold by auction at the plant and saale day often brought as many as a thousand buyers to the town. The Taylor buggy was the popular conveyance of that period. Other industries were drawn to the town. I am told that in its heyday Sheldon had a tile plant with three large kilns, two saw mills, a cooperage plant, two grain elevators, a bank, two hotels, the stores and shops that go with such a town and an outstanding and norotious reputation for murderous fights and brawls. History has it that there were ten saloons by my authority questioned that. The story goes that the editor of one of our Fort Wayne newspapers, who was inclined to disbelieve stories of such brawls was sent in by his local correspondent, made a Trip there to investigate. Expressing alound his belief that Sheldon had been slandered, before he could reach safety of the railroad station was knocked to the ground and soundly trounced. Sound like Sheldon was quite a place. There are no Amish or Mennonite in the area.
