Dawnette, I don't have any Hollopeters in my database, but my Myers data is very, very spotty and needs a lot of work. Can you give the the Myers that you have? Maybe I can connect them. Hi Karen! My Grandfather was an engineer on the B & O Railroad that ran through Garrett until he retired around 1975. I am not sure about the term "driver," but the rest I remember hearing as railroad terms. The conductor took tickets on passenger trains, the fireman (at least in the old steam engines) was responsible for keeping the fire going, I believe the fireman position is still used, but I am not sure exactly what they do! I remember hearing about the watchman, but don't remember what they do. The driver perhaps is the engineer? I believe I saw a mailing list at Rootsweb that is all about Trains! You may want to try that for a while! Good Luck! My great-grandfather, Emanuel Myers, is listed in the 1906, 1907, 1910, 1911, and 1915 city directories. His profession is listed as "driver" in 1906; "condr" (conductor?) in 1907; "fireman" in 1910, and "watchman" in 1911. Does anyone know if all of these terms are railroad terms? He was a farmer in Perry Township before he got married in 1905, but we have no idea what happened to him later in his life. On my grandfather's birth certificate, Emanuel's profession is listed as "horseman." We are very confused. Any help with these terms would be greatly appreciated. Karen
I am searching for information about the Myers family that lived in Perry Township, Allen County, Indiana. My direct ancestors are Nathan and Leah Myers. They are on the 1860, 1870, and 1880 census in Perry Township. I need to find out more about them and their children. My father visited Allen County last weekend -- Dutch Ridge and Huntertown cemeteries -- and found many family stones. Some had flowers on them, so we must assume that some family members are still living in Allen County. We would love to find them. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Karen

The Indiana State Archives is moving, and this problem was brought to attention from the DeKalb County Indiana List. PLEASE READ THE MESSAGE BELOW !!! I found this info. on the archive vault at Access Indiana, http://www.state.in.us/icpr/move.html ( "Visit our new critical records vault" link at bottom left of page) It boasts of fire safety to 2000 degrees etc, but says NOTHING about being water proof or humidity control! You may find your Indiana Representatives listed here: http://www.state.in.us/legislative/leg_list.html Karl PS. If you belong to OTHER Indiana lists, please let them know! From: INTERNET:INGEN-L@rootsweb.com, INTERNET:INGEN-L@rootsweb.com To: [unknown], INTERNET:INGEN-L@rootsweb.com Date: 2/26/101 2:45 PM RE: [INGEN] Indiana State Archives All Indiana researchers who use the facilities at the Indiana State Library should be aware of the following: The Indiana State Archives will shut down it's research facility in the Indiana State Library in downtown Indianapolis, February 28th. It will reopen on the northestside of Indianapolis, at 6440 East 30th Street on March 15th. There will be more space in the new facility, but those who have checked out the new building say old problems threatening the safety of documents remain and a new one crops up. The Archives will be in a state-owned former RCA Corp. warehouse, built in the 1950's, that has a flat, leaky roof and leaking pipes. The roof once collapsed under the weight of snow. In addition the humidity is said to be much too low for storing archival records. It has been tested at just 10% rather than the desired 40 to 60%. Let your governor and legislators know that this is a foolhardy action that could lead to disaster for archival records like military records, naturalization records, state facilities records, etc. The email address for Governor Frank O'Bannon is: fobannon@state.in.us Jack L. Kay & Marg, I check old Fort Wayne City Directories which list county residents in the back. I followed on family from 1917 through 1930. Up to and including 1924 they lived in Sheldon. In 1925 - 1930 they were listed as living in Yoder. The name must have changed 1924/25. >From a book at the library called, "The Towns of Allen County": Sheldon, or Yoder, in Pleasant Twp, came into being in 1869 after the construction of the Fort Wayne and Muncie Railroad, now the Nickel Plate. The original plat was made by a carriage manufacturer who had arranged with the railroad for siding facilities for his business. The village was named Sheldon in honor of the superintendent of the railroad. The railroad in later years changed the name of the station to Yoder. The carriage business flourished and built an enviable reputatuon for their wares. The carriages were sold by auction at the plant and saale day often brought as many as a thousand buyers to the town. The Taylor buggy was the popular conveyance of that period. Other industries were drawn to the town. I am told that in its heyday Sheldon had a tile plant with three large kilns, two saw mills, a cooperage plant, two grain elevators, a bank, two hotels, the stores and shops that go with such a town and an outstanding and norotious reputation for murderous fights and brawls. History has it that there were ten saloons by my authority questioned that. The story goes that the editor of one of our Fort Wayne newspapers, who was inclined to disbelieve stories of such brawls was sent in by his local correspondent, made a Trip there to investigate. Expressing alound his belief that Sheldon had been slandered, before he could reach safety of the railroad station was knocked to the ground and soundly trounced. Sound like Sheldon was quite a place. There are no Amish or Mennonite in the area. Thanks again Marge from Yoder
Hello List, I am seeking the parents and siblings of GEORGE W. BURNETT, Birthplace, Indiana. I have no idea the county. That was all I could find on census, death certificate, etc. On a tape, made when she was very old, his wife Mary told this story. George's mother was killed in an accident or died suddenly, when he was an infant. There were other children, don't know ages or how many. George was adopted by Shoemaker/Shumaker/Shoebaker??? He lived with them until the courthouse burned. It destroyed the adoption records. I don't know his age at the time this occurred. He must have been fairly young, because he was in Kansas by April 14, 1900. He married Mary M. Bell on that day. He said he couldn't have left if the records were still available for his adoption. Reason unknown. When he left Indiana, he took back his birth name Burnett, and continued to use it until his death. This is a brick wall. I would really appreciate any help or advise you could provide. If you have any information, you may Email me at JANETSQUAW@aol.com Thank you in advance for your help. Respectfully yours, Jan
Sheldon, Indiana, was named in 1869 in honor of the railroad superintendent of the Lake Erie & Western railroad. At that time, Andrew J. Taylor laid out the town plat along these tracks in preparation for his carriage manufacturing business. "Yoder" was a name later thrust upon the town of Sheldon by the railroads, referring to the railroad station there, without specific legal authority. "Sheldon is the legal name, and Sheldon it will remain." This information is from Griswold's "The Pictorial History of Fort Wayne, Indiana", vol. 1 (page 700). Tom Palmer
I'll get my act together and not send so many e-mails - if there are any books at ACPL on post offices, that might indicate the year - I have seen a book like that, but of course, it would have had to be put out the year it was changed and check it against the one published the year before Marge
A story that I always heard was that the name Yoder was chosen because it was the name of some official of the railroad - I never knew of anyone named Yoder that lived there. Whenever I say that I grew up at Yoder, people will always ask if I am Amish or Mennonite - because of the name. Marge
Thanks Marge. I have a copy of Griswald's History of Fort Wayne, 1917. It says on page 698, Pleasant Twp. "The village of Sheldon dates from about 1869, when Andrew J. Taylor, in preparation for the manufacture of carriages on his land, laid off a part of it in a town plat, along the tracks of the Lake Erie and Western railroad. Arranging with the railroad company for a side track convenience, the village was name Sheldon in honor of the railroad superintendent of that day." On page 700 it says, "Yoder is a name which has been thrust upon the town of Sheldon by the railroads, though without other authority than themselves, but it applies only to the stations. Sheldon is the legal name, and Sheldon it will remain." The book doesn't say when the name was changed, but it must have still been Sheldon in 1917. There is a book at the library called "Ghost Town of Allen Co.". I will check it tomorrow. Marge, do you remember any Suders there? If it's Amish country, that would be a loaded question. I have a gg aunt from Sheldon (according to her sister's obit) and I'm trying to go in the backdoor (so to speak) to find into abt my gg gramma. kay > In a message dated 3/6/01 3:23:03 PM Eastern Standard Time, > lindachurchward@home.com writes: > > > > Kay, > > I will be going to the library tomorrow and will check and see if their is > > any mention of the date. > > Linda > > > > Kay, there is a history of Sheldon/Yoder in a history of Allen Co. - I > believe it is Griswald's - and I think it mentions the date or at least the > changing of the name - I remember reading "Sheldon it is and Sheldon it will > always remain!" > > Marge Kientz, formerly of Yoder, Indiana, now of Oak Ridge, Tennessee >
