    1. Re: [INADAMS] Harden
    2. Kathy I am very appreciative of your reply. Elizabeth Ann Harden/Hardin was born 12 Feb 1854 in Indiana, perhaps Adams County. 1860 census Elizabeth Harden, age 6 born Indiana, is enumerated in the household of Erastus Lincoln 49, and his wife Mary Ann 48 and their children. Union Township, Adams County. Living several doors away is William Harden 31 born PA. and his wife Jane R. Harden age 23 born in OH.; (Tuscarawas Co., OH) 1870 Elizabeth Harden age 16 born IN., again in the household of Erastus Lincoln. Union Township, Adams County Living next door is William and Jane R. Harden. Elias Whitright, age 22 born OH. is living in the Harden household, working on the farm. 22 Nov 1870 Elias Whitright and Elizabeth Ann Harden marry in Adams County, Indiana Elias and Elizabeth Ann move to Convoy, Van Wert County, Ohio purchase property and have three sons. 18 Feb 1877 Elias Whitright dies at age 29 years in Convoy 18 Feb 1878 Elizabeth Harden Whitright marries second to Leander Johnson, a widower, in Convoy, Van Wert County, Ohio. Leander Johnson becomes Administrator of the Estate of Elias Whitright and is granted guardianship of his three minor children. 28 Jun 1903 Elizabeth Harden Whitright Johnson dies in Union Township, Adams County, IN. Elizabeth is brought back to Convoy where she is buried in Mentzer Cemetery. Record of Death # 8156 Decatur, Adams County, recorded in Book H-22, page 25. Her death record states that she is the daughter of Elizabeth A. and _______Hardin. I have confirmed with the Adams County Health Department that the father's name was left blank. Burrell Harden's middle name is Ross. Elizabeth Ann Harden Whitright uses the name Ross as a middle name for two of her sons, Dalton Ross Whitright and Thomas Ross Whitright. The wife of Erastus Lincoln with whom Elizabeth Harden is enumerated in two census, is Mary Ann Burrell Lincoln, the sister of Jane R. Burrell Harden. This research is just to tell you what I do know about Elizabeth Harden, except who her parents are. Thank you, Jean Whitright In a message dated 12/7/2011 11:28:08 A.M. Eastern Standard Time, heritage@bernepl.lib.in.us writes: I pulled up the 1860 and 1870 censuses for Adams Co. IN and found no record of Elizabeth Harden in 1860. However, I found her in 1870 in Union Twp., Adams Co., IN (Pleasant Mills) living with Erasmus Lincoln age 60 and George Lincoln age 34. It states that Elizabeth was born in Ohio and William and Jane are living next door with a son, Isaiah, age 15. We have a record of William and Jane marrying on 14 Nov 1852 in Adams Co., IN. Because Elizabeth was born 1854 and is living next door to William and Jane and eventually marries Eli Whitright who is living with the Hardens I truly thought that she had to be their daughter. But I found William and Jane in the 1860 census and their oldest child is 4 year old Isaiah. Surely, they wouldn't have shipped Elizabeth out at the age 5. And because Elizabeth says she was born in Ohio but her parents married in Adams Co., Indiana I think this gives us another reason to believe that she is not their daughter. I looked up Elizabeth Harden in 1860 in Ohio and found a lot of them but I have no idea which one would be her. Could it be that she is a niece of William Harden? Maybe her parents in Ohio died and various family members took in Elizabeth and any siblings she may have had between 1860 and 1870. When we find her in Adams Co. in 1870 she is 16 and old enough to be hired out. That could explain why she is living next door to William and Jane. Just a thought. Elizabeth married Elias Whitright 22 Nov 1870 also in Adams County. They lived in Convoy, Van Wert County, Ohio. Based on census records I had believed that Elizabeth was the daughter of William Harden and Jane Ross Burrell. But, after ordering copies of both their wills and learning that Elizabeth was not named as a child and also not mentioned in their obituaries, I am starting all over. Any Harden researchers out there?
