Trying to determine the parents of Elizabeth Ann HARDEN born 1854 in Adams County and died in Adams County in 1903. Elizabeth married Elias Whitright 22 Nov 1870 also in Adams County. They lived in Convoy, Van Wert County, Ohio. Based on census records I had believed that Elizabeth was the daughter of William Harden and Jane Ross Burrell. But, after ordering copies of both their wills and learning that Elizabeth was not named as a child and also not mentioned in their obituaries, I am starting all over. Any Harden researchers out there? Thank you, Jean Whitright
I have an obit for Melville Ross Harden s/o William & Jane, if you think that may help. He mentions 2 deceased sisters of which I know one is Lucinda Edna Harden-Burger. ********** Trying to determine the parents of Elizabeth Ann HARDEN born 1854 in Adams County and died in Adams County in 1903. I pulled up the 1860 and 1870 censuses for Adams Co. IN and found no record of Elizabeth Harden in 1860. However, I found her in 1870 in Union Twp., Adams Co., IN (Pleasant Mills) living with Erasmus Lincoln age 60 and George Lincoln age 34. It states that Elizabeth was born in Ohio and William and Jane are living next door with a son, Isaiah, age 15. We have a record of William and Jane marrying on 14 Nov 1852 in Adams Co., IN. Because Elizabeth was born 1854 and is living next door to William and Jane and eventually marries Eli Whitright who is living with the Hardens I truly thought that she had to be their daughter. But I found William and Jane in the 1860 census and their oldest child is 4 year old Isaiah. Surely, they wouldn't have shipped Elizabeth out at the age 5. And because Elizabeth says she was born in Ohio but her parents married in Adams Co., Indiana I think this gives us another reason to believe that she is not their daughter. I looked up Elizabeth Harden in 1860 in Ohio and found a lot of them but I have no idea which one would be her. Could it be that she is a niece of William Harden? Maybe her parents in Ohio died and various family members took in Elizabeth and any siblings she may have had between 1860 and 1870. When we find her in Adams Co. in 1870 she is 16 and old enough to be hired out. That could explain why she is living next door to William and Jane. Just a thought.
