The following obituary appeared on the front page of the LaGrange Standard on 1 April 1948: "Funeral Services Held for Herdie Roe On Tuesday Afternoon. Funeral services for Herdie Roe, widely known LaGrange resident, were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Carney Funeral Home with Rev. Virgil L. Yohe of the Mt. Zion Lutheran church officiating. Burial was made in Greenwood cemetery. The deceased had been in failing health the past two years. He died early Sunday morning from a heart ailment at the LaGrange County Hospital where he had been taken two days previously. Mr. Roe was born in Adams county February 8, 1876, the son of Caleb and Sarah Smith Roe. There in Adams county he received his education and grew to manhood. At 16 he united with the Methodist church at Salem. In 1903 he was married to Miss Vina Kelly, who with three daughters, one granddaughter, and five grandsons survive. The daughters are Mrs. Neil Mizner of LaGrange, Mrs. Garth Stoltz of Topeka and Miss Vivian Roe at home.Mr. Roe followed the occupation of interior decorator down through the years. For a time he was associated with R. E. Carney in electrical work. For nearly twenty years he was a substitute rural letter carrier for Ralph Blough out of the LaGrange post office. He took pride in whatever work he was doing and wanted each task well done. During the thirty-seven years he live4d in LaGrange he made many friends. His family and his community were his great interests. Herdie Roe will be missed in LaGrange. Card of Thanks We wish to thank the neighbors and many, many friends who were so king to us and for their acts of thoughtfulness, floral offerings, messages and offers of help during the illness and after the death of our loved one.
