Mr. Thomas, who had been suffering from a heart condition for some time, suffered a severe heart attack last Thursday at his home on Anna Maria Island, Florida. He had resided in Florida for a number of years following his retirement. He was born in Decatur March 13, 1901, a son of Dr. Philip B. and Estella Hart-Thomas. He was married June 4, 1927, to Miss Cook, who preceded him in death. In 1957, he was married to Frances S. Schaefer, who survives. Mr. Thomas, who served as principal of the Lincoln school in this city for more than 30 years, was a graduate of Decatur high school and Purdue University, and received his master of science degree in education from Indiana University. He served for four years as an officer in the United States Army during World War II, and had retired as a lieutenant colonel. ACTIVE IN SCOUTING Mr. Thomas, highly active in Boy Scout work for more than 50 years in Indiana and Florida, was a charter member of the first Boy Scout troup organized in Decatur in 1913, with Clark Spahr as scoutmaster. He served as a scoutmaster, on troop committees, district commissioner, and on the the executive committee of the Anthony Wayne area council. He received high scouting awards of Eagle Scout, Order of Arrow, Scoutmasters Key, and Silver Beaver. He had served on the official board of the First Methodist Church in Decatur and as financial secretary of the Roger Memorial church at Anna Maria, Fla. Mr. Thomas was a member of Sigma Chi college fraternity, and the Scabbard and Blade, honorary military fraternity. He was a past president of the Decatur Rotary club, and a member of the Elks and Masonic lodges in Decatur, 32nd degree in Scottish Rite Masonry, the Mizpah temple of the Shrine in Fort Wayne, the High Twelve club of Anna Maria Island, the Retired Officers association, and the American Legion posts in Decatur and Bradenton, Fla. Surviving in additon to his wife are a son, Daniel C. Thomas of Wheaton, Ill; three grandchildren; two nieces, Mrs. Harry Dailey of San Diego, Calif., and Miss Helen Haubold of Decatur, and a nephew, Thomas Haubold of Decatur. One son, Philip Thomas, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Anna Maria Island, Fla., with interment at Skyway Memorial Gardens in Manatee County, Fla.
