Coffman was born in Adams County Indiana, April 10 1853, and died Sunday morning September 9, 1928 at Mercy Hospital in Parsons, aged 74 years 4 months and 10 days. Mr. Coffman came to Neosho County in April, 1878, and he participated in the social and business affairs of the county for more than half a century and the regard and esteem of his fellow citizens those achieved upon men of the highest integrity, and unquestionable sagacity. His industry and education were his mainstay and the pivot of his success. March 24, 1880, Mr. Coffman was united in marriage with Miss Addie Ferguson on Benton Harbor Michigan and three children resulted from this union, namely Guy M. of Morrison, Oklahoma, Clyde C. of the home address, and Thomas E, of Deerfield Missouri. Mr. Coffman's education was obtained in the Decatur High School and at Rose Oaks College in Indiana, and at the age of seventeen he began his long and successful career as a teacher in the common schools. Three years in his native state and twenty year in Neosho County, tall, in brief, the story of his connection as a teacher with the public schools, and the deceased requested that his pall bearers be selected from his former students and were as follows: Albert Martin, Otto Clough, Mackey Van Clears, Ed Ferguson, Clyde Willis and Frank Kolow. While teaching Mr. Coffman also carried on farming, buying eighty acres of new land in Ladore Township and later buying additional land which he occupied until 1897. In 1898 he embarked in the hardware business in Galesburg, and was about the same time appointed postmaster. In 1897 he moved his store of goods to Krio and formed a partnership under the name of Bell & Coffman, which firm dissolved the following year when he took the presidency of the Allen State Bank. Later he disposed of his interests in the bank and moved to Rocky Ford, Colorado, where he again engaged in the banking business. Five years in Rocky Foard and he returned to the old home in Ladore Township where he resided until called by death, Mrs. Coffman having passion on before December 25, 1922. He was selected county commissioner in 1897, which office he filled until he entered the bank in 1898. He also served on the official board of the Ladore M.E. Church, located on his farm, in fact, has taken on active interest in the work of the church wherever he has resided. George Coffman was a highly respected and honored member of the community and in his death Neosho County has lost one of its very best citizens - a good man is gone. Funeral services were conducted from the Coffman home Monday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, by the Rev. O.L. Orton, former pastor of the Rocky Ford, Colorado, M.E. Church, but now pastor of the Girard Church, assisted by the Rev. W.L. Shuler, local pastor of the M.E. Church. The words of the officiating ministers seemed to have received inspiration from his character they had known so well and the solemnity of the occasion was enhanced by the vocal numbers by the Erie male quartette. Burial was in Mount Hope Cemetery. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
