BURRY Andrew G. Burry, 101, industrialist and civic leader in Fort Wayne for many years, and a former resident of Berne, died Wednesday evening at his home at Three Rivers Apartments North, Fort Wayne. He would have celebrated his 102nd birthday on Feb. 2. Mr. Burry, well-known in Adams County, was president and chairman of the Wayne Paper Box and Printing Corp., Fort Wayne, until its sale to Container Corp. of America in 1955. He was native of Switzerland and came to the United States 90 years ago at the age of 11, settling in the Swiss community of Berne. While in Berne, he learned the English language and was licensed as a school teacher, giving it up at the age of 23 for a $7 per week partnership in a book binding business. His new job later led to the establishment of Wayne Paper Box & Printing with his partner, Joel Welty, two years later. ACTIVE IN CHURCH AFFAIRS Mr. Burry was active in the Plymouth Congregational Church, Fort Wayne, and was a member there since 1902. He served as chairman of trustees, deacons, and pulpit committee, and was Sunday School superintendent for 17 years. He was also a charter director and organizer of the Associated Churches of Fort Wayne & Allen County. His wife, Ida Lister Burry, died in 1962. Surviving are a son, Ralph L., of Aptos, Calif., and a daughter, Mrs. John E. Hoffman of Fort Wayne. Mr. Burry was quite active in Fort Wayne and Allen County, organizing the National Paper Box Manufacturers and serving as its president unitl 1924; he was a charter member and former director of the Fort Wayne Rotary Club, serving as president in 1931. From 1913 to 1921, Mr. Burry served as president of Hope-Methodist hospital, now known as Parkview memorial hospital. DIRECTOR OF BANK He was a director of the Lincoln National Bank & Trust Co. from 1922 to 1973, when he was named an honorary director on his birthday. Mr. Burry was president of the Fort Wayne YMCA from 1922-26, and was active in Boy Scout work, earning the highly-coveted Silver Beaver award in 1941. He was named a 33rd degree Mason in 1963. Mr. Burry was named the Fort Wayne man of the Year back in 1949 by United Commercial Travelers and was honored by the Allen County council in 1973. He attended Oberlin College in Ohio. Private burial services will be in Lindenwood Cemetery, of which he had been a director. The funeral arrangements are being handled by Klaehn funeral home, Fort Wayne, and there will be no calling hours.
