He was born on August 20, 1907 in Hoagland to William and Bertha Hoffman Melcher and married Emma Reifsteck on September 3, 1932; she survives. He retired after a 25-year career as a milk hauler for Allen Dairy and was also a retired brickmason. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church (Flatrock) and a member of Brickmason's Local 2 for 30 years. Other survivors are two daughters, Mrs. James (Marlene) Stover, St. Paul, Ohio; and Mrs. Charles (Barbara) Shepherd, Troy, Ohio; two sons, Fred Mechler, Cincinnati, Ohio and Stephen Melcher, New Haven; two sisters, Loretta Scheumann, and Helen Melcher, both of Decatur; a brother, Carl Melcher, route 8, Decatur; 11 grandchildren and 2 great-greatgrandchildren. Two brothers, Delbert and Paul Melcher, are deceased. Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. John Lutheran Church (Flatrock), Rev. Albert Berlein officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visiting hours are 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in Zwick-Sefton and Jahn Funeral Home and 9-10 a.m. Thursday in the church. Preferred memorials are to the church, Hoagland's EMS or "The Lutheran Hour". Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
