A retired businessman, Mr. Beer was the owner of Habit Cleaners in Berne for 36 years before retiring in 1981. He was a member of the Berne Lions Club and of Cross United Church of Christ, where he was in the church choir. A member of Berne American Legion Post 468, Mr. Beer was a World War II veteran with the United States Army. Born in Adams County on November 17, 1917, he was the son of Harve and Rosa Liechty-Beer. He was married on Janurary 16, 1942, to Ruth Borne; she died in 1990. Survivors include two sons, Randy L. Beer, Berne, and Richard "Rick" A Beer, Wells, Maine; two daughters, Mrs. Greg (Deborah) Stewart, Berne, and Mrs. Skip (Sherill) Handy, Fort Wayne; three sisters, Mrs. Ellen Leyse, Monroe; Mrs. Sarabelle Zeigler, Berne and Mrs. Iona Melchi, Fort Wayne; and seven grandchildren. A sister, Irene Sprunger is deceased. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Cross United Church of Christ, Berne, with burial in the MRE Cemetery, Berne. Calling is 2-8 p.m. Friday at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home, Berne, and one hour prior to services at the church Saturday. Preferred memorials are to Swiss Village or to the Cross United Church of Christ Assistance Fund. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
