The youth, a student at New Haven high school, was pinned under the car when the jacks which were placed under the front of the car slipped, dropping the vehicle on his chest. Young Garwood was pronounced dead on arrival at the Adams county memorial hospital at 11 a.m. Sunday. Coroner Richard Linn said death was caused by a crushed chest. The tragedy was investigated by Linn and the Adams county sheriff's department. The accident occurred while Garwood was visiting at the home of a sister, Mrs. Jerry Ross of Decatur route 2. The youth was born in Decatur March 5, 1952, a son of Ivan, Sr. and Lucille Schaffer-Garwood. He attended the North Adams school at Monmouth, where he was a member of the student council, and the freshman basketball and baseball teams. He attended the Nuttman Avenue United Brethren church. Surviving are his parents; six brothers, Ivan E. Garwood, Jr., of Magley, William E., Thomas F., James L., Terry W., and Timothy D. Garwood, all of Fort Wayne; and six sisters, Mrs. Donald (Barbara) Waidelich and Mrs. Larry (Judy) Burkhart, both of Fort Wayne, Mrs. Jerry (Sue) Ross of Decatur route 2, and Tanya, Leah and Connie Garwood, all at home. Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Nuttman Avenue United Brethren church, with Rev. Sylvester Martin officiating. Burial will be in the Decatur cemetery. Friends may call at the Zwick funeral home after 7 p.m. today and after 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church until time of the services.
