Baltzell, 96, a Monroe Township resident from 1939-90, died at 5 p.m. Friday in Swiss Village at Berne, his residence the past four years. He was born on June 16, 1897 in Adams County to Thomas H. and Emma Jane Andrews Baltzell. He married Dorothy M. Ramsey on October 16, 1926; she died on May 29, 1966. He married Bernice Ramsey on September 21, 1971; she survives. He retired in 1967 after many years as a Monroe Township farmer. He was also a pilot for 40 years, including a job as an air mail carrier. He flew the first and only air mail from Adams County on May 18, 1938. He was also a member of the Civil Air Patrol at Van Wert, Ohio during World War II and the Flying Farmers and the OX5 Aviation Pioneers. He was a member of Monroe United Methodist Church, Decatur Masonic Lodge 571, Scottish Rite of Fort Wayne, York Rite, Mizpah Shrine Temple, Adams County Shrine Club, Adams County Calliopers, and Order of the Easter Star chapter 127. He was a former member of the Decatur Rotary Club and a charter member of the Monroe Lions Club and the Monroe Fire Department. Other survivors are a daughter, Mrs. John (Jane) Cullar, Kokomo; a brother, Victor L. Baltzell, Berne; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Deceased are two brothers, Dent and Walter Baltzell, and five sisters, Theresa Adler, Ruth Williams, Electa Lockner, Von Reber, and Crystal Elzey. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Zwick-Sefton and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur, with burial in Decatur Cemetery. Visiting hours are today until 5 p.m., then 7-9 p.m. There will also be Masonic memorial services at 8:30 p.m. Preferred memorials are to Shriner's hospitals.
