Your help is needed once again in our fight to save Buffington Island Battlefield and the graves of Morgan's Raiders and other casualties who died on this hollowed ground on July 19, 1863. The situation is very critical as mining could begin any day, removing gravel and soil at the rate of 10,000 cubic yards per week, perhaps containing, God forbid, the remains of Confederate and Union soldiers!! Some may argue the validity of preserving battlefields but has it come to the point that pleas have to be made to preserve cemeteries and burial sites? We have a moral obligation to prevent the bones of America's dead and the sacred ground in which they are buried from being mined and shipped down the Ohio River to become yet another parking lot or part of a highway. A petition will be send to Bob Taft, Governor of Ohio, urging him to intervene in this matter. Please follow this link : http://www.e-thepeople.com/petition.cfm?PETID=234417 Your signature is needed! It is dead wrong for our nation's heritage and history to be ignored and sold out to the highest bidder. It is a travesty to deny the same respect to the brave soldiers who died at Buffington Island that we accord to all other Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice and fell in battle. Please share this message with as many people as possible! Thank you!! For our heritage! Marlitta H.
