V. DeVor, whose body was found in the St. Mary's River at Fort Wayne Saturday. Finding of the body about noon that day culminated a concentrated search that had been underway since April 1, when it is believed she intentionally jumped into the river near Pleasant Mills. Dr. A. P. Hattendorf, Allen county coroner said he would return a verdict after a routine investigation into the circumstances. Condition of the body prevented the casket from being opened. Identification was made by Mrs. Albert Beery, a sister, by means of Mrs. DeVor's white gold wedding ring and dental work. Guards at the Anthony Boulevard dam, who first noticed the body, said that it narrowly escaped being completely destroyed in the churning waters. Driftwood, wedged behind a log which had wedged against one of the dam rollers kept the body from going through the dam, where it undoubtedly would have been destroyed by heavy pieces of drift wood churning in the undertow. G. P. Porsch, a city guard at the dam, first saw the body about 9 a.m. Saturday and thought it was a dummy. About noon his attention was again called to the object by a passerby, C. E. Hostler, Fort Wayne. They decided to call police. A police boat detail found the current too swift so a detail of firemen and police lowered themselves to a ledge along the north side of the dam, from which they maneuvered the body close to the masonry with pike poles. Then a rope was tied about the body and it was raised to the dam. Local authorites were notified and after the body was positivley identified it was returned here by John M. Doan of the Gillig & Doan funeral home and sheriff Herman Bowman. It remained at the funeral home until time for the services Sunday. Surviving Mrs. DeVor are the husband, a Decatur dentist and former army major; her mother, Mrs. Hattie Mills, of Decatur; three sisters, Mrs. Beery, Decatur; Mrs. Mary Oliver of Fort Wayne and Mrs. Dewey Anderson of Angola. Mrs. DeVor was well known here. She was a registered nurse and had been prominent in social activities. Members of the family said that she had threatened to take her own life several times and that she had returned from the Easthaven hospital at Richmond only a few days before her death. She had been in ill health for some time. Finding of the body ended one of the most unusual searches for a drowning victim in the county's history. Members of the sheriff's department, state police, Fort Wayne police, the local and Van Wert, Ohio volunteer fire departments, several "experts", scores of relatives, friends and volunteer citizens had participated in the search at various times. Scores of theories concerning the probable location of the body were all given attention by police authorities and searchers, but proved futile. Unusually high waters and the accompanying swift current, as well as considerable inclement weather, hampered searchers during most of the month. Here are two obits that I have for Nicholas: Fort Wayne Journal Gazette, Allen County, Indiana; Friday, July 7, 1911 DECATUR, Ind. July 6 - Nicholas Wagoner, aged 82, one of the pioneer residents of the county, died last night at his home in Monroe after a week's illness from paralysis. He was born in France but had lived in this county since the early forties. In 184(8?), he was married to Miss Mary Everhart, and to them were born 10 children, of whom the following survive: John of this city, Ira of Monroe, Eli of Montana, Mary Jane Baker and Minda Laisure, of Monroe, Etta Silvers of Winchester. Mr. Wagoner's second wife was Sarah Whi?ker. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Winchester church near Monroe, the Rev. Wyer officiating. >From Karin King who thinks this is from the Berne Witness published in Adams Co Gen. newsletter Summer 2011. (originally published July 7, 1911) NICHOLAS WAGNER DIES - After Having Lived Over 70 Years in Monroe Township - Funeral This Afternoon Another old pioneer passed away Wednesday evening when Nicholas Wagner died at his home in Monroe from the effects of the stroke of paralysis he received a week ago yesterday. On that same day he and Mrs. Wagner had been in Berne spending the day with Mr. and Mrs. John P. Nussbaum (Mr. Wagner being an uncle of Mrs. Nussbaum) and they had returned home and Mr. Wagner done his chores and returned to the house and was sitting in a chair when he received the stroke of payalysis. Had he lived until the 26th of the month he would have been 83 years old. Mr. Wagner was born in the southern part of France and came with his parents to this state, county and township when he was ten years old. He lived here ever since, was married three times and reared a family of six children, all of whom are married and still living. There is John and Ira Wagner living in Monroe township and their youngest brother, Eli, who moved to Montana about six years ago. Two of the daughters, Mrs. Ira Baker and Mrs. Tom Laisure, are also living in Monroe township and another one is married in Richmond. Deceased also leaves a brother, James Wagner, 78 years old, who lives two miles north of Monroe. His third wife, who, with the children, and many grandchildren mourns over his death, was 81 years old on July 4th. The funeral willl be held at the Hardscrabble church in Monroe township this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial to take place in the grave yard near the church. Deceased had received the full force of the stroke of paralysis mostly in his head and he was therefore unconscious until death relieved him. Thanks, Joey! Enjoy Life - It has an Expiration Date -----Original Message----- From: Kay Lehman [mailto:kayefel@cox.net] Dear Ms. Pearce: This is a question regarding some music I have that has its history in Geneva. It's a handwritten piece of sheet music for a song called "My Picture Show Girl." The lyrics were written by my great-grandmother Norma Ward Palmer, and she dedicated it to her father James B. Ward who was a physician in Geneva. He died in 1927. The name of the man who composed the music is cut off on the copy I have; all I can read is Harry M. Ro. . . My aunt, who is 89, can remember some discussion regarding this music when she was a small child, so it looks as though the music was composed sometime around 1927. My other family members who were alive that far back are no longer living so there is no one who would know anything about it. As far as I know the song was never published anywhere. I've looked through your website and don't find any name resembling the name fragment I have of the composer. Would there be any other resources in your library that could shed some light on this? I live in Arizona so it wouldn't be easy for me to come out and do research there. Do you have a service where someone can do research for a fee? I would really like to find a history of this music because I'm working on an arrangement of it and would like to give credit to the composer. I would appreciate any guidance. Thank you! Macklin is Fatally Stricken at 2:25 p.m. Today in Sudden Attack The sudden death of Postmaster Phillip L. Macklin, 55, at 2:25 o'clock this afternoon at his home, ?? North First street of heart ailment, came as a shock to this community. Mr. Macklin suffered from heart trouble for several years, but was able to attend to his official duties uninterrupted. Since Monday of this week, he had been confined to his home and it was until a short time before his death that his condition was reported serious. Members of his family were called to his bedside. The direct cause of his death was angina pectoris. Employees at the Decatur postoffice informed the Daily Democrat that Mr. Macklin's condition was regarded serious and that the children had been called home. A few minutes later his death was announced. Mr. Macklin was conscious of his heart ailment, having suffered from a severe attack a few years ago at his garage. He took particular care of himself, conserved his strength as much as possible, did not over excercise or subject his system to over exertion by climbing stairs or doing those things which a man of his active qualities would otherwise do easily. One of the best known men in Adams county, a former county surveyor and for years active in Democratic politics, Mr. Macklin took office as Decatur postmaster, February 7, 1936. He was recommended for the appointment by Representative James I. Farley. The heart ailment did not in the least interfere with Mr. Macklin's close supervision and personal contact at the postoffice. He performed his official duties meticulously and it was a well known fact about town that he was the first of the postal employees to report for work in the morning. His daily habit was to be at the office at six o'clock and was on the job when the carriers started out. The deceased was born June 2, 1882, the son of Phillip A. N. and Mary Macklin, pioneer residents of Wabash township. When a boy, he attended rural schools in that township and attended church at the Methodist-Protestant church near Bryant, known as the Macklin church. Later he attended Valparaiso normal college and Valparaiso university. For four years after leaving college, Mr. Macklin taught in the county schools of Wabash township. He was married in early life to Lola Jackson. From 1905 to 1913 he was engaged in the clothing business in Decatur with the firm of Vance, Hite and Macklin. In 1913 he was elected county surveyor and served two two-year terms in that office. Between 1917 and 1927 he was engaged in the contracting business building roads and bridges. From 1926 until the time of his appointment as postmaster, Mr. Macklin was in the garage business in this city. APPOINTED POSTMASTER IN 1935 On February 7, 1935 he was appointed postmaster of the Decatur post office, receiving the appointment upon the recommendation of Congressman James I. Farley. After his appointment as postmaster the garage was managed by two elder sons, Wendell and Richard. The garage, known as the Phillip L. Macklin Garage, is located on Madison street here. Surviving the deceased, besides the widow, are four sons, Wendell, WPA supervisor, of this city; Mrs. Ralph Tyndall, wife of the Bluffton clothier; Robert Macklin, of Evansville; Betty, also of this city; Mrs. Chalmer DeBolt of the Homesteads; Richard, manager of the local garage and David, at home. The following brothers and sisters also survive: Trot, of Lagrange; Mark and Haskell, both of Chicago; Mrs. A. R. Graham, of Bourbon; Mrs. Arthur Zehr of Berne, and Mrs. Bert Fifer, of near Bryant, Jay county. One granddaughter, Joyce Ann Tyndall, of Bluffton, also survives. He was a member of the Masonic lodge and of the B. P. O. Elks of this city. Funeral services had not been completed at a late hour this afternoon.
