SIMON Victor A. Simon, 85, Berne, died at 8:45 p.m. Saturday in Caylor-Nickel Medical Center, Bluffton, of heart failure after having been ill for two weeks. He was a lifetime Adams county resident, born on Feb. 2, 1910 to Arnold and Flora Myers-Simon. He married Emma Rauch on Aug. 12, 1933; she survives. He was a mechanic at Balsiger Motors in Berne for many years, then retired in 1990 after being self-employed as a mechanic. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Berne and was a church trustee. Other survivors are a son, Larry Simon, Berne; a brother, William "Bill" Simon, rural Berne; a stepbrother, Gerald "Verlin" Smith, Monroeville; a stepsister, Mrs. Eugene (Mabeline) Moser, Bluffton; two grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A brother, James Simon, and two sisters, Leola Sprunger and Martha Gifford are deceased. She was born on March 16, 1913 in Belgium to Camiel and Marie Sinneave Colpaert and married Arthur H. Lengerich on February 18, 1936; he died on Nov. 9, 1994. She worked with her husband and son, Fred, as a partner in Lengerich Meats, west of Monroe, for many years. She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Decatur, Third Order of St. Francis, Rosary Society, Harvest House, and Women of the Moose. Surviving are a son, Frederick A. Lengerich, rural Monroe; three daughters, Mrs. William (Anna Marie) Kruse, Decatur; Mrs. Lewis (Mary Margaret) Mallott, Collinsville, Illinois; and Mrs. Daniel (Joyce E.) Schnitz, rural Monroe; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A sister, Julia Hess and a grandson are deceased. There will be a prayer service at 9:40 a.m. Wednesday in Zwick-Sefton and Jahn funeral home, Decatur, followed by A Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. BURRY Andrew G. Burry, 101, industrialist and civic leader in Fort Wayne for many years, and a former resident of Berne, died Wednesday evening at his home at Three Rivers Apartments North, Fort Wayne. He would have celebrated his 102nd birthday on Feb. 2. Mr. Burry, well-known in Adams County, was president and chairman of the Wayne Paper Box and Printing Corp., Fort Wayne, until its sale to Container Corp. of America in 1955. He was native of Switzerland and came to the United States 90 years ago at the age of 11, settling in the Swiss community of Berne. While in Berne, he learned the English language and was licensed as a school teacher, giving it up at the age of 23 for a $7 per week partnership in a book binding business. His new job later led to the establishment of Wayne Paper Box & Printing with his partner, Joel Welty, two years later. ACTIVE IN CHURCH AFFAIRS Mr. Burry was active in the Plymouth Congregational Church, Fort Wayne, and was a member there since 1902. He served as chairman of trustees, deacons, and pulpit committee, and was Sunday School superintendent for 17 years. He was also a charter director and organizer of the Associated Churches of Fort Wayne & Allen County. His wife, Ida Lister Burry, died in 1962. Surviving are a son, Ralph L., of Aptos, Calif., and a daughter, Mrs. John E. Hoffman of Fort Wayne. Mr. Burry was quite active in Fort Wayne and Allen County, organizing the National Paper Box Manufacturers and serving as its president unitl 1924; he was a charter member and former director of the Fort Wayne Rotary Club, serving as president in 1931. From 1913 to 1921, Mr. Burry served as president of Hope-Methodist hospital, now known as Parkview memorial hospital. DIRECTOR OF BANK He was a director of the Lincoln National Bank & Trust Co. from 1922 to 1973, when he was named an honorary director on his birthday. Mr. Burry was president of the Fort Wayne YMCA from 1922-26, and was active in Boy Scout work, earning the highly-coveted Silver Beaver award in 1941. He was named a 33rd degree Mason in 1963. Mr. Burry was named the Fort Wayne man of the Year back in 1949 by United Commercial Travelers and was honored by the Allen County council in 1973. He attended Oberlin College in Ohio. Private burial services will be in Lindenwood Cemetery, of which he had been a director. The funeral arrangements are being handled by Klaehn funeral home, Fort Wayne, and there will be no calling hours. The bandits entered the Steele residence and bound Steele and Kipfer together and tied Mrs. Steele to a bed. The men took approximately $17 in cash from their victims and thoroughly ransacked the house, evidently in the belief a large amount of money was hidden in the residence. After ransacking the house, the bandits tore loose the telephone wires. The victims worked for nearly an hour before they were able to loosen their bonds. Both men were described by the victims as being fairly oung, one 5 feet tall and the other 5 feet 10 inches. Both were described as being well dressed, wearing dark blue overcoats and dark hats. The home of Mrs. Anna Ripberger, corner of Eighth and Monroe Street, was badly damaged by fire, starting from explosion of a coal oil stove, late this evening. No one was home at the time of the explosion, which was caused when a can of water boiled over on the stove, spraying burning oil over the entire kitchen. The kitchen was totally destroyed, and smoke rnnied practically all furniture in the house, except for the front room of the residence, which is occupied by a beauty shop. A stranger walked into the station early in the evening and asked for pennies to play on a penny cigarette board. While he was playing the pennies, a car drove into the station, the driver asking service. While Fogle was servicing the car, the first stranger came out of the station and gave Fogle two cents he said was owing. Fogle noticed that the driver of the auto picked up the first man shortly after leaving the station, but the disappearance of the money was not discovered until Fogle checked the day's receipts before closing. Adams County Coroner Robert Zwick placed the cause of death as blood clot. Mrs. Baxter had been in ill health for several years, but her condition was not considered serious. She had spent her entire life in Decatur. She was born here Aug. 3, 1902, the daughter of Girt and Clara Reynolds, both of whom are deceased. She is survived by the husband, Curtis Baxter, and two children: Robert James, 15, and Kathryn Louise, 10. Other survivors are the step-mother, Mrs. Charles Massonee, of this city; two half-sisters, Mrs. Bernard Braun of the Homesteads, and Mrs. Waldo Eckrote of Mercer Avenue, and a half-brother, Noble Reynolds. She was a member of the Church of God. Funeral services will be held at the home Thursday at 1:30 p.m., and at the church at 2 p.m. The Rev. Glen Marshall, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be made in the Maplewood Cemetery. The body will be removed from the Black Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon and may be viewed at the home after 7 o'clock Tuesday evening until time of the funeral. MONCE Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Thoma-Rich Funeral Home, Bluffton, for Henry F. Monce, 62, of Silver Lake, route 1, Angola, brother of Mrs. Ted (Irene) McCune of route 1, Geneva. He died at 10:15 p.m. Friday at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. Burial was in Stahl Cemetery. Mr. Monce operated the Monce garage in Petroleum for 32 years. Born March 22, 1912 in Jackson township, Wells County, he was a son of Edward and Laura Dawson-Monce and married Marjorie Williamson on June 16, 1934. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Joe of Tuscola, Ill., Jack and Kent of Petroleum; one daughter, Miss Connie Monce of Fort Wayne; a brother, Claude of Van Wert, O.; four sisters, Mrs. Ted (Irene) McCune of route 1, Geneva; Mrs. Chester (Delcia) Nahrwold, Mrs. Ivel VanSwearingen and Miss Catherine Monce, all of Fort Wayne; and 10 grandchildren.
