NORMAN RETTIG Rev. Norman Rettig, 76, Berne, died at 1 a.m. Friday in his apartment of an apparent heart attack. He had been ill one year. A retired minister, Rev. Rettig moved to Berne in October 1990 from Swanton, Ohio. He served in the ministry for more than 50 years in several places including Delta, New Carlisle and Swanton, Ohio, Fort Wayne, Jackson, Miss., and Honolulu, Hawaii. He was also caretaker at the Dayview Care Center in New Carlisle, Ohio, and was a member of the First Missionary Church in Berne. He was born to Mr. and Mrs. Noai (?) Rettig on November 19, 1915 in Napoleon, Ohio. He married Marjorie Siegle on June 12, 1937 in Ohio; she died in March 1987. A son, Neal, is deceased. Survivors include two sisters, Zelma Lee, Archbold, Ohio and Lucille Bannister, Napoleon, Ohio; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was born in Fort Recovery, Ohio, on Sept. 15, 1915 to Morton and Lydia Grile Hiatt and married Marabeth Flaler on April 26, 1941. She survives. He served as Jay County Commissioner from 1956-60, Jay County Clerk from 1960-68, and Jay County Council member from 1970-74. He was also a farmer and an auction clerk for 45 years. Other survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Jud (Margaret) Sprunger, Berne, and Mrs. Tod (Virginia) Glentzer, Kokomo; one brother, Harold Hiatt, Fort Recovery; one sister, Mrs. Robert (Edith) Prescott, Union City, Indiana; and four grandchildren. One sister is deceased. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Baird-Freeman Funeral Home, Portland, with burial in Springhill Cemetery, Fort Recovery, Ohio.
