    3. Norman, I can't place the Jonathan but he probably belongs to my line somewhere! I have missing children in the early years & he's probably an offspring. Jonathan was a common name in my line & I even have one w/ a daughter named Lucinda but the time isn't right. They all left IN & headed to MI, IL & OK so who knows?! BUT I looked & I have a Flora RUNYON married to Rufus BOZE 1917 Adams Co., IN. They had 5 children. The BOZE line is tied into my STRAIT line. Flora was the f/o John & Lydia HILL. Anything there?? 1. [INADAMS-L] SCOLES, MAJOR, SACKETT & related
    2. Cindy Owens
    3. OK, here are the rest of my folks for anyone still reading! :>) The SCOLES. Don't get me started on this frustrating group of people! The first of the line to come to Adams Co was Andrew Wesley SCOLES b1799 MD, married 1819 OH to Hannah Mercer CALVERT who was b. 1797 PA & d. 1882 WI. They were the parents of 10 children. Two of the boys fought in the Civil War. Son Andrew fought in the 47th Co. C Infantry IN Vol & died in the Battle of Champion Hills in MS. His brother, my ancestor, Sylvester Cramer SCOLES also fought in that battle but in another regiment, the 23d Co.K. He survived & was the executor of Andrews estate. This is where it gets ugly. It seems that at least 7 of the sibling squabbled over his meager estate. Sylvester had to sell the estate to pay the debts. Whatever the case Sylvester moved to WI along w/ some of his siblings sometime between 1866-1870. Back in 1862 Sylvester had married Nancy Jane MAJOR who was b. 1843 . In 1877 Nancy & Sylvester both were sick w/ TB, Sylvester had probably caught this in the war. They decided for whatever reason to go back to Adams Co., IN. Nancy died on the way, Sylvester just 11 days later but after arriving in Adams Co. What an awful trip that must have been! They had 2 children: Andrew Wesley "Wes" age 15 & Mary Myrtle age 3. The children were raised by Sylvester's sister, Margaret who was living in Adams Co & had married Dennison TINKHAM. Mary Myrtle married Samuel FRANK in 1899, & Wes married Letty TEETER in 1883. Wes & Letty were the parents of 9 children, including my great-grandfather Isaac Franklin SCOLES who married Catherine Pearl KELLY. Related Scoles/Teeter names: AGLER, BEVINGTON, BOLLENBACHER, FOGLE, MYERS, WADE, DOWNS, OUTCALT, BLOSSOM, SUTTON, VANDUESEN. SACKETT family. The first of my SACKETT line to move to Adams Co was Samuel Sackett 1836, he bought 160 acres in Blue Creek Twp. He was married to Isabella MOORE who was b. c1800 & died soon after arriving in IN. They had 6 children, including my ancestor Mary (1825-1878) who married James William MAJOR in 1843. Samuel SACKETT married again in 1837 to Julianna HEATH & had 13 more children! He died 1856 in Blue Creek & Julianna died 1894. James MAJOR & MAry SACKETTs first child was Nancy Major who married Sylvester SCOLES. They had 13 children. Related SACKETT surnames: FRANK, BEEMAN, COLLIER, DANNER, RAY. MAJOR family. Another frustrating line. William MAJOR b. 1781 MD d. 1856 St. Mary's Twp., Adams Co., buried in Wiltshhire, Van Wert Co., OH. In 1832 he bought 80 acres in what was then Allen Co. In 1835 he was granted land in Adams Co for service in the War of 1812. He seems to have lived smack on the border of Adams Co & Van Wert Co., OH. He had 8 known children, but there are many more Majors around Adams Co that I can't correctly connect. He married in 1808 OH to Rachel WATKINS, she died 1846 St. Mary's Twp. Their 5th child was James William MAJOR mentioned above. Related surnames include: DAILEY, HELMS, GULICK, BRITTSON, BLOOM, McMANNIS, WEIMER, GINTER, McCUNE, QUINN, OLIVER, ELZEY, SMITH, BRANDYBERRY. ************* Cindy Torres Owens 1023 Aquia Dr Stafford, VA 22554-1940 http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/o/w/e/Cindy-L-Owens/index.html

    3. Howdy! I'm Cindy Owens & researching a whole slew of folks from Adams Co., IN. First the Teeter family, I actually have more than I need on them but if you're new here & looking for someone let me know! The KELLY family. Jonathan KELLY died 1870 Blue Creek Twp., was married to Sarah KERRIGAN who died 1855. They had 8 children that I know of, I suspect there were several other daughters as there is a 6 year gap between the first & second child. My ancestor was Justus KELLY b. 1817 d. 1887 & married 1840 in OH to Rebecca COURTRIGHT who was b.1821 & d.1897. Other related KELLY surnames: CHAMPER, LOOFBORROW, FETTERS, BURK, SNYDER, McCOLLUM, WHITSEL, RICKNER, RUMPLE, ERIXSON, FORD, ELLIOT, My Kelly family continues w/ Jonathan David KELLY b. 1844 d. 1918, he was married 1868 to Elizabeth Ruth THARP b.1848 & d. 1915. I have a picture of them w/ all their 11 children. The THARP family came from NY via KY/OH. Christopher Bergen THARP was b.1811 in Cayuga Co., NY & d. 1886 in Geneva. He was married to Ruth RUSE b.1811 & d.1880. Would like to know more abt this line. Related THARP surnames: SHAW, TORRENCE. Catherin Pearl KELLY was the daughter of Jonathan & Ruth. She was my great-grandmother & b. 1886 & d. 1925 in OK from pernicious anemia just several years before they found the cure. She was married to Issac Franklin "Frank" SCOLES b. 1887 & d. 1963. SCOLES family in next note. Cindy Torres Owens 1023 Aquia Dr Stafford, VA 22554-1940 http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/o/w/e/Cindy-L-Owens/index.html

My Great-Grandfather ROBISON is buried there, but doesn't have a stone. I know where his grave is, and I have documented evidence that he is buried there. Who does one contact to get permission to put a stone there? Also, my GG-Uncle and Aunt Kerr are there, but their stone is almost completely obscured by a large bush. Who does one ask for permission to cut down offending vegetation? >I'm working on a new feature for the Adams Co. web site that will provide a >listing of cemetery records in the county... The listing of the Backesto Cemetery, while a welcome addition to the Adams Co. archives, is woefully out of date, having been copied from a book compiled in the late 1950s. Tim, if I have time this summer, and if no one else is working on it, I'll try to get you an updated list for Backesto. There are many names missing from that list. You're doing great work, Tim. 2. Tim Singleton
    3. Hi Folks, It's been awfully quiet lately on the list. How about a roll call. Send a message to the list and tell us a little about some of the Adams County families you're searching for. Do you have any memories or stories you'd like to pass along? I'm working on a new feature for the Adams Co. web site that will provide a listing of cemetery records in the county. It will be the same format as the CCHelper query system, so the family surnames will be indexed. You'll be able, when all the cemeteries are input, to search for a surname, without knowing what cemetery the individual is buried in. There are already a couple of folks who are willing to help by supplying cemetery records. If anyone else is interested, I'll give you the format the inscriptions have to be in. I'll also let you know when the system is up and running. By the way, be aware that copying inscriptions out of a published book may be a copyright violation. Facts cannot be copyrighted, but format, commentary and interpretation can be. When dealing with cemetery information, the safest bet is to walk the cemetery and copy the inscriptions, unless permission can be obtained in writing from the publisher of the book. The same is true of obituaries in newspapers. The facts cannot be copyrighted, but the way they are put together and the writing of the obituary can be. If you are going to quote obituaries in a publication or on the web, as I have in my family genealogies, you must have permission of the publisher. 2. Tim Singleton
    3. Welcome new members of the Adams Co. IN Discussion list. Reminder - you can find a list of all who have formally registered the Adams Co. surnames they are interested in by going to: http://www.rootsweb.com/~inadams/adamsco.htm I haven't received any updates since February 9. If you are on this discussion list and would like to be added, please send me your name, your email address, your city and state of residence, and the Adams Co. surnames you are researching in the following format: Your Name Your Email Your Present Residence SURNAME1, SURNAME2, SURNAME3 If you have a chance to get to Adams Co. you'll find a lot of willing helpers. I was back about 3 weeks ago and visited the County Clerk's office, Health Department, Recorder's office, Auditors office, and the Law Enforcement center (wills, tax records, etc) as well as the library and found a lot of folks willing to help. I found a flyer at the library, which I haven't had time to get up on the Adams Co. web site yet. To summarize: "We offer a limited research service (in genealogy and family history materials) by which we search standard references as time allows for a specific person during a specific time period from the Adams Co. area." You can call 219-724-2605, Mon - Fri from 9am to 5 pm, or write to the Decatur Public Library, 128 S. Third St., Decatur IN 46733. You must provide the following: Your name and address, your telephone number, limit of cost (i.e. the maximum you are willing to pay) and a query: name, time period, type of information. The charges for patrons living in Indiana are $2.50 per query + 20 cents per copy if over 5 pages. For patrons living outside Indiana, $5.00 per query + 20 cents per copy if over 5 pages. Donations are always welcome. If you've never visited the library, you ought to know that there is an index file of all obituaries in the Decatur Daily Democrat and previous papers. I think Dick Heller is responsible for getting that started, right Dick. It's a valuable resource that you may not find in many places. Here's a tip: don't forget to search the tax records. They can help place individuals in specific locations in the years between the federal census as well as give you some valuable information about the family and whether or not they owned land. One more item for today. Please do NOT send file attachments to this list. Large attachments can wreak havoc with some internet providers and take a long time to download for those of us without speedy connections. If you have something to share, why not notify the list about what you have and ask for those who would like to have a copy to email you directly. Then you can send the item to those who wish to have it. Thanks for your help. I hope your Easter is a joyous and blessed one.
