Margie, I can't help w/ the genealogy & didn't I "see" you over on PADutch?! I do have a question though. (Of course!) I see your line also went to Richland Co., WI. Some of my Adams Co., IN folks did as well. The Scoles in fact. Do you know why so many went there? It was after the Civil War, did that have something to do w/ the migration? Anyone know? Two comments, neither of which is likely to be useful: 1: I have a lot of Neffs - mostly in Rockingham Co., VA and Highland Co., OH. (Couldn't find yours however.) I have found that the name NEFF has often evolved into NAVE. That is because it is a German name and when a German speaking person pronounces NEFF it tends to sound like NAVE to an English speaking person. 2: I have one Garretson: Lena G. Garretson (1883-1951) m. 9 Jan 1908, in Auglaize Co., OH to Willis Sylvanis Siferd. Howdy! Well my NEFF's were certainly from York co., PA, but I don't have a Peter in the bunch. However I haven't traced all the branches, as usual I have my own line but it "daughtered" out rather early. I have more on the Cambria Co., PA bunch as I found them looking for someone else. Figures! They were indeed Mennonite, some became Brethren or Dunkards. The info I show here is from the Brethren records from their newsletter. They have a mailing list but I don't belong as my Aunt does & she passes along anything relevant to our lines. 1 Unknown Neff ..2 Hans Henry Neff b: Abt. 1692 Bonfeld, Germany d: Bef. While you are looking into Neff, if you find one that married a Lavina Henry, dau of Martha P. Garretson m. Unknown Henry, he belongs in my stack. All I have is a bit from a Newberry, PA book Mount Zion Luthern Church -"Religious services were first held in a schoolhouse, about one and a half miles from Mount Zion Church, in Fairview Twp. As the membership increased the schoolhouse became too small, and the people felt the need of a larger building. One acre of ground was bought. A building committee composed of J. Pledger, J. This message is automatically generated whenever the word "form" or "forms" is detected in the text of a message because we've found that it is most frequently used to obtain genealogical information. If your request is for genealogical information, certain kinds of genealogical requests must be submitted on specific forms. (AHA!) The numbers and subjects of these forms is as follows: Form 80 (Military service and pension records prior to World War I, including the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War, and Spanish-American War); Form 81 (Passenger Arrivals) Form 82 (Copies of Census Records) Form 83 (Eastern Cherokee Applications) Form 84 [Land Entry Files] Form 180 (Military service records, World War I and later). Don Kear SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (September 28, 1998) -- Millions of family records dating back more than 450 years are being made available to the public today in two CD-ROM packages by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the world's foremost authority on genealogy. The North American Vital Records Index and the British Isles Vital Records Index contain church, civil and parish records from the United States, Canada and the countries of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. "These new CDs may save families hundreds of hours of time and painstaking research," said Elder D. Todd Christofferson, executive director of the Church's Family History Department. "The process is as simple as typing in a name. But this is only the beginning of what's to come. The Church is aggressively working toward developing other products that will simplify genealogical research, making it faster and easier to access needed information and trace family histories." The North American Vital Records Index lists nearly five million names taken from church and civil records and from other collections in the United States and Canada. The items in this seven-CD set focus on marriage records (6 discs) and also list some births and christenings (1 disc). The North American records indexed date from 1620 to1888. The index will be updated periodically as more information becomes available, adding millions of new names with each future volume. The British Vital Records Index contains nearly five million names from parish registers, civil registrations and other record collections in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. The records on the index span more than three centuries, from 1538 to 1888. The five CDs in this set concentrate on birth and christening records (4 discs) and also list some marriages (1 disc). The amount of accessible data can vary greatly from parish to parish. This vital records index will be an ongoing project which will also be updated periodically. "Nearly half of American families can trace part of their lineage to the British Isles," Christofferson said. "Our repository of records is the most comprehensive source available to help these families trace their roots, not just to ancestors who arrived in America, but to their forebears in 16th century England." Genealogy is the third-most-popular hobby in the U.S. and the second-most-popular topic on the Internet. According to a Maritz Marketing Research study conducted for American Demographics Magazine, approximately 19 million people actively trace their lineage. Since 1978, thousands of Latter-day Saint volunteers and others have spent millions of hours carefully reading and examining microfilmed records. The volunteers "extract" from these original records the most necessary and useful information, such as names, dates, places, and family relationships. The resulting data is then indexed, and in the case of the vital record indexes, automated into valuable resource files that improve ease of access and save time for family history devotees. The Family History Department expects to begin releasing the 1880 U.S. Census and the 1881 British Census in early 1999. This collection will total more than 80 million names. Three other new software products were introduced in April of this year. They include: 1. Family History SourceGuide - an automated research guide, developed by the experts at the world-famous Family History Library. 2. The 1851 British Census - an index to census records of Devon, Norfolk, and Warwick co. 3. The Australian Vital Records Index (1788-1905) - an index to records from New South Wales, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia. The Family History Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the world leader in genealogical work, with more than 3,200 family history centers worldwide and the world's largest collection of family history records, housed in Salt Lake City, Utah. Items from the Family History Resource File CD-ROM Series are available from: Church Distribution Center 1999 West 1700 South Salt Lake City, Utah 84104-4233 U.S.A. I don't know of any STOUGH's but as you know I'm researching the SCOLES family from MD/PA to OH/IN & beyond. In Knox Co., OH 1840/1850 was an Ammon Scoles, in Homes Co., OH same time there was Joseph Ammon. Back around 1800 supposedly the Scoles family had lived in Huntingdon Co., PA so I'm wondering.......I don't know how common the AMMON surname was but I'd be curious to know if there are any SCOLES in the bible. I received the following from another list. Don't know how to contact the individual in possession of the Bible. If you're interested in contacting him, I'd suggest getting in touch with the newspaper. "VIRGINIAN REVIEW - Sat 15 Aug 1998." It had the heading "VA >MAN TRYING TO FIND FAMILY TO RETURN BIBLE.' The article reads "YORK, Pa. - A Virginia man is trying to return a 100 year old Bible to the descendants of a York County, PA family. But finding them has not been an easy matter. Julian Gordon of Newport News, VA. > Came into possession of the Bible last year, when his father-in-law died. His father-in-law had purchased the Bible in 1973 at an auction in Delta. But trying to find the family, Gordon doesn't have much to go on -- just a few names written inside and eight photographs. The name that occurs frequently is Stough. The York County telephone lists about 145 numbers for homes and businesses under that name. Gordon tried calling some of the Stoughs. A few were openly skeptical, apparently think the call was some kind of hoax..............." Inscriptions, photographs, and papers inside the bible tell: "it was given to Harry Isaiah Stough by his mother, Savannah on 25 Dec 1885. Harry had a brother named Ammon, who married Minnie F. Welk. They had at least three children: Marie Florence; Laroy George; and Raymond Welk. Other papers mention Sevannia Wantz Stough and Lydia Wantz. The pictures were taken at Jeffres Art Studio in York. Mr. Julian Gordon, according to the newspaper article has said he will send the bible and contents to anybody who can tie their family to Ammon and Harry Stough. The newspaper quotes him "It's there. I'll send it to them. I'll pay the postage," This will be quite a find if the right family can be located. Please pass this message on to other lists. We would all appreciate finding it if it was our family bible. -- Ken Boonie Coordinator USGenWeb Project Huntingdon County PA http://www.rootsweb.com/~pahuntin/ ______________________________
