Hello to all, I've been subscribed to the Adams County list for some time, but this is my first posting, so I hope it gets through! I'm an on-again, off-again researcher, depending on my time available. Names I've been researching in Adams County are: Werling Bley Schmidt Germann (really more Van Wert Co., Ohio) I am especially interested in more information on Henry Jacob Schmidt, b. 10/25/1832 d. 7/5/1911 I know he had four wives and am trying to find out more about his second wife (my gr. grandmother), name Catherine Volz (not sure at all on the maiden name). Her bd. is 8/3/1826 and d. 3/19/1896. Thank you! Carol Germann Hoffman Fairfax, VA.
Hello again, A reminder...be sure that when you send a message to the list that it is sent in plain (ASCII) text. These lists that are run from Rootsweb, as the Adams Co. List is, will not accept messages in HTML (web) format nor will they accept message attachments. Be sure your email program is configured to send messages in plain text. Thanks. Hi all, I sent out a message yesterday detailing some of my family genealogies that are now posted. They are all indexed with Surname Helper and you can search them for any surname. But you must use the Surname Helper link under "Other Links" on the page. It's titled "Search All Locations with Surname Helper." You cannot use the county or state Surname helper links, because all of my genealogies, along with most of the others that have been submitted are not located on the official county pages. Because of Rootsweb requirements, I have placed all those files in a rootsweb directory that has been allocated to me because of my financial support of Rootsweb. Hope all that makes sense. Good luck. Thought I'd add to the Roll Call: HUFFMAN, PINE, SALES, HUSER, HOOSIER, ADLER, NEADERHOUSER, RUNYON and more. Love to hear from anyone working on these lines. Nancy
Loretta - I have many UHLs in my family tree, although it appears that in both of our cases they are related by marriage as opposed to direct bloodline. Thanks for the compliments. It's been a labor of love...somedays more labor, somedays more love. But I've made a lot of great connections by doing it. Some county pages may be fancier with lots of graphics, but I live in rural Madison Co., KY and the fastest connection I can get (with a 33.6 modem) is 24.6, so I know what it's like to wait for graphics to load. I try to keep it simple but functional. And I'm always anxious for comments...what can I do to improve the pages. I've updated some of my family genealogies and added a couple of new ones to the genealogy page. Updated are: Mann Kiess Singleton Warner McConnehey Spangler New are: Clever MeWhorter Within a couple of days they should be indexed on Surname Helper, links to which you'll find on the Adams Co. page (distinct from the new search routines which I recently posted). Those new routines are still somewhat experimental and aren't refreshed on a regular schedule yet. I'll be away from the computer for a few days, to visit our daughter in San Antonio. Talk to you when I get back. Welcome to the list, Loretta. It's been awfully quiet out there. I trust that you all are working so hard on your genealogies that you don't have time to post here! I sent another inquiry to the Decatur Daily Democrat asking if there was any projected time when the online obits might be back in service. If you've tried to run a search lately on the Adams or Randolph Co. web sites, you've discovered an error message. I'm going to have to remove them temporarily. It seems that they've become so popular across the country that the computer at Rootsweb couldn't handle the file size and the demand. I'll let you know when they're back in operation. There are some new and updated genealogies posted on the Adams Co. web site. Margie Pierce submitted the Williams, Reed and Hower families. I updated my Kiess, Mann, McConnehey, Singleton, Spangler and Warner families. They contain many other Adams Co. names. There are also a couple of new search routines you might want to try out. I've also posted new information for Adams Co. cemeteries thanks to the submissions from Thomas Liby. He's focusing on the Kirkland Twp. area. If you have access to cemetery information, that's not published in a copyrighted publication, I'd be glad to add it to the database. Let me know and I'll send you the format for importing into my software. Hope you all are having a GREAT new year! Hi Everyone, I've just added a search routine to both county web sites. This search engine is very quick and was developed especially for Rootsweb by Randy Winch. Give it a try and let me know if you run into any problems. You can actually search for any word on each site, not just surnames and locations. I'll develop some more detailed instructions later...just wanted to let you know so you could try it. Am using one month trial access at ancestry.com and found the following in the database entitled Vermont Pensioners of 1835: Description: This database identifies thousands of Vermont soldiers who were covered under various pension acts in the early 1800s. Most entries list name of soldier, rank, area of military service, and other important information. Those researchers with ancestors in this region will find this military database of particular value. Bibliography: United States Senate. Report from the Secretary of War, in Obedience to Resolutions of the Senate of the 5th and 30th of June, 1834, and the 3d of March, 1835, In Relation to the Pension Establishment of the United States. [Vermont Section], Washington, D.C.: Duff Green, 1835. County: Washington Co. Name: Jason Winch Rank: Sergeant Annual Allowance: 40 00 Sums Received: 120 00 Description of service: Massachusetts continental line When placed on the pension roll: February 5, 1833 Commencement of pension: March 4, 1831 Age: 88 Thought it might be of interest, though I don't know how it connects, Richard & Linda Scheimann
